I need some help here. I have, like you, the first element copied many times. But the mask property affects all of my elements just like is the original layer affected. Imagine I have a box, and a big triangle. The box is only the half in the triangle. I multiply the box that it going to cover all the triangle. Now I apply the mask property to the boxes. All the boxes are now affected exactly the same is the first. If the first is only the half visible, now, with the matte property, all the boxes are only half visibles like the fist. I don't want that. Please help me.

To do not add Set Matt to each layer, you can use Adjustment Layer and apply Set Matt effect on it only. So all layers below Adjustment layer will be using that Mask. Very useful tutorial, thank you!

When I do that, the adjustment layer stays white and then when I apply a fusion mode to it, the masking disappears. :(

Thank you! This saved me so much work and made mine work. Because my objects I was trying to mask all had different transforms, it was affecting the mask for some reason and making it appear differently for each layer. But using an adjustment layer fixed all of that.

YOU ARE A GOD!! but my problem is the shape I'm using isn't showing the glow feather over my layers. Instead, it's showing the hard edges of the shape. Does anyone how to the glow work again ? I'm trying to mimic a feather and not show the hard lines of the shape I'm using.

Weird, I added a shape to the screen, did the steps, but now my individual objects are being half masked out, rather than being masked out when they reach the mask area. Like compared to this video, if instead of vanishing when they got to the yellow bar, the ball shapes themselves have roughly the lower 1/8th of them masked out. Any idea what I did wrong?

My Set Matte effect won't work properly.
When I create my shape layer and apply the set matte effect to my pre-composed layer and choose the shape layer to take matte, it works fine.

The negative for me about the Set Matte option is that the mask scales with the item it is matting (unless I don't know how to turn that off. I use matts to mask off media that's going to appear on LED walls so I want the matts to stay the same size and position no matter what asset I'm masking off so it doesn't bleed onto an adjacent wall. I turned off "stretch to fit" and it still scales if I scale the asset. It also moves its position with the asset, which is also not what I want. I LOVE Apple Motion's method of masking. I simple hit Command M and I get an image well for an Image Mask and I can drop any layer containing my desired mask into it and I've masked off my item. DONE. If I WANT the mask to change with the item there's a different option for that situation. AE needs to change the Track Matte option so it lets you choose any layer you want and that would solve this for everyone!

Rather than copy and paste the effect onto each layer, place an adjustment layer above all your layers just below your mask, put the 'Set Matte' effect onto the adjustment layer, set 'Take matte from layer' to your mask layer and leave 'Invert Matte' unticked.
This also means that any scaling/position changes etc. on your layers beneath will be taken into account.
