  • As the Winter festive season is only a short while away, I thought that I should better go ahead and order an early X'mas present for myself! So, join me for the unboxing of an awesome little selection of cacti and other succulent plants that I ordered online from the Uhlig Kakteen cactus & succulent plants nursery in southern Germany. Without giving too much away, let me just say, that there is an awesome mix of plants that are cacti (some incredibly and fiercely spined ones!!) as well as non-cacti (both from the African as well as American continent!!).
    Join me in my greenhouse, watch the unpacking and enjoy!
    Cheers,
    Joe

    Wow! I love that last columnar cactus, too! It’s so white and wooly. 🥰 I like all your choices, Joe. Now you make me want to buy myself Christmas presents as well. If I do end up shopping for plants, I blame you. 😆

      Ahahaha, Ana! I love your awesome comments and will indeed also "blame" you in future when I buy lot's of beautiful new cacti that I have seen in your awesome collection, lol! So in this way, we can simply blame each other and just go ahead and keep buying plenty of beautiful plants, haha, I love it!! Thanks for watching and really fantastic that you enjoyed the selection too! Yeah, that Eulychnia saint-pieana is another one of those that I have had on my search list for quite a while! Worth searching for! Thanks again and wishing you a wonderful Sunday and also week ahead!

    Omg! I love that Aloe erinacea! ❤❤❤ I will look for that

    • @cactusjoe

      Hey Ana! I was exactly like you, the moment I first saw that Aloe erinacea in a picture of a catalog a while back, I had to start looking for one, haha! Apparently, from what I have been reading, it is a little sensitive to grow, so not the easiest of Aloe, but I hope that it will like it's new home here! Hope you find one for your collection very soon too! My understanding is that according to the latest taxonomy it's correct name now is...Aloe melanacantha var. erinacea...so grown under that name in some nurseries possibly, and perhaps that also helps finding one.

I remember they grow on an Island off Yemen. That Echinocereus is beautiful, and I am amazed by the beauty of that Eulychnia saint pierre! I enjoyed watching😊🙏🌟

      Hi Newman! Brilliant to read your comments and feedback as always, my friend! Yes, I have seen that awesome Notocatus horstii f. purpureus of yours in your wonderful videos, it is a stunner of a plant! Yep, the E. abdelkuri indeed is one that originates from the Arabian peninsula, and it grows on limestone rocks is what I also have read, so it is not the easiest of Euphorbias to grow, does demand a pretty special treatment, but I hope it will like it in it's new home here. This specimen is of course seed grown, in cultivation here in Europe. Haha, glad you too like that beautiful little columnar Eulychnia, I am curious to see it grow and whether it will keep those woolly white areoles. Sending you very best cactus greetings to Japan, and have an awesome week ahead!

    Hi Joe ! This is a nice selection toon of plants from Uhlig Kakteen ! The abdelkuri is a gorgeous euphorbia. I was lucky to find one specimen this year by the French seller names Plantemania, specialist of caudiciform and rare plants. And guess what ? In October I went to a cacti and succulents market near Paris and one of the sellers was Matthias Uhlig himself. It was nice to meet him and I bought some cold hardy echinocereus and also few rebutias. And yes, the last cactus’ eulychnia, is very beautiful and I love also your new aloe erinacea ! Enjoy your new plants and merry Christmas ! 🌵🌵🌵💚💚💚

    I thought our winters were difficult here in southeast Queensland, Australia! 😂 Ours are so variable though in winter, passably warm and sunny days followed by below freezing wet & windy ones 🫤. Love your shirt !

    • @cactusjoe

      Hi Tracey, thanks for watching and also for your brilliant feedback. Also, I find it quite interesting to read about the winter weather challenges that you too have, in SE Queensland. I always find it so interesting to read about the various weather types and local challenges we all face when growing our cacti and succulent plants! And everyone will have their own "working solutions" to cope with these challenges...and with all these variations, our cacti are so accomodating and can adjust, it is just simply fascinating! Hope you have a great weekend ahead, best wishes and greetings to you in beautiful Australia!

    Wow nice haul. Yesterday i received my order from Uhlig kakteen as well here in Slovenia. I got huuuge box, almost like my fridge I was like WTF is this, it's this some mistake. It was full of paper for protection and for the first time I see that heating bag. I never heard or seen for that before. I didn't belive that bag was still pretty worm,its good idea. My cacti are still autside. Here in Slovenia on Adriatic coast is still pretty worm, never snowing. I'm miss snowing, winter landscape like in my mother country Bosnia. My sister live near Stuttgart I'm gonna visit her and enjoy in winter games and sports.

      Hi Adis! Many thanks for watching and commenting, I'm really happy that you liked my new plants from Uhlig! And, haha, that is great to hear, such a coincidence that you also just received a shipment from Uhlig, small world! Yep, they like to pack their shipments big, and given the cold winter weather that is a fantastic thing, to know that the plants are still protected from frost and ice. Indeed, their added heating bag units are also super! Wow, fantastic to hear that you are still able to have your cacti outside currently, living on the Adriatic coast, lucky you! But I can well imagine that you would be missing snow and winter landscapes, coming from Bosnia, which is such a beautiful country! I hope that you have a great time with your sister in Stuttgart, and hopefully there will be snow and cold winter weather when you go there! At least there, the Black Forest and Alps also are not far away! Enjoy your Sunday, thanks again and have a great time!

      Hi Sander, that is wonderful to read about your interest in these beautiful plants! Thanks for watching the video and very happy that you enjoyed it! Also, thanks so much, glad that you are finding the videos on my channel inspiring, thanks so much for your feedback, very much appreciated! If you have any opportunity to start growing a few of these plants, I can only recommend getting yourself a few, for a bright window sill or so, perhaps on the balcony, garden or terrace in the Summer. And if you are dreaming of a greenhouse, than do not stop that dream, as it will come true one day! It was my dream for a long time too and eventually, finally, after many years I had my dream come true and now I cannot imagine growing my collection without one anymore, haha! Hang in there and very best of luck and success!! Happy growing!

For now iam planning to make a staircase stand in front of the window to showcase my little collection. Because its also winter here in the Netherlands i will go easy on the cactus. Should i water the plants a little this winter or is it better to start with it in de early spring about the end of march? Do you have a beginner care guide on your channel because i could not find one yet? Have a nice day iam looking out for the next video.

      @@sanderdevries3690 thanks Sander, that is excellent to hear, sounds like you have a very nice start to a cactus & other succulents collection right there already! And making a staircase stand is also a great idea for window growing! Yep, going easy on the cacti is a good idea during these Winter months, as they will normally not grow anyway, so try and keep them relatively cool and quite dry. When March comes, that is when you can slowly start giving them a little water at the beginning, then slowly increasing. Perhaps my video on Springtime activities could be useful, I will send you the link in a moment...

    Great unboxing! 👍🏻 I also liked your new intro, I recognised that you changed it a bit 😉
    Greetings to the beautiful Juno! 🐕 You made a good selection of plants. This Euphorbia abdelkuri seems a bit like a fossil, haha 😄 But some of these names are really hilarious, hard to pronounce and even harder to remember 😅
    Enjoy your second advent! :)

      Additionally, I have a short question: For Opuntias, it is not unusual that they shrivel a bit during the dormany period, right?
      Moreover, I also have a video idea for the future: Maybe you could do a video covering the topic "How old can cacti become?" (of course depends on the genus/species). I'm not sure how big of a topic this would be but I would at least be interested in getting to know more about that question😊

    • @cactusjoe

      Excellent, thank you so much, Jacob! Glad that you found the unboxing and all the new plants enjoyable! haha, describing the E. abdelkuri as some sort of a fossil is quite true, it just looks very, very strange and like from another world, doesn't it!
      The names are not just hard to pronounce and remember, it is also incredible how fast some of them change! And very often one nursery will offer a plant with one name, and a different nursery will offer that same plant with a very different name...and when you dive into literature, both names are no longer the accepted, valid one, lol!! You can't win when it comes to keeping up with taxonomists, haha! Btw, if you are interested, I always use the Llifle web pages to check on the latest names and synonyms of a plant. You might know and use those pages too.
      Haha, thanks, I have passed on your greetings to Juno, she is very happy of course that you find her beautiful!!
      Ah, yes, and you noticed the slightly updated into and outro to the video, I also changed the music, very happy that you liked the new intro!

      Hi Jacob! No, it is perfectly normal for especially Opuntias to shrivel during the winter dormancy! If they are in a relatively warm location (above 15-18C) then you could also give them a few drops of water every now and then if you like. Most will not be flowering anyway, so no big deal if the dormancy is not very cool and dry. But equally, also if you keep them cool and they shrivel, that is no problem at all, they will quickly fill themselves up again with moisture/water in the Spring!
      Also thanks for your suggestion, that is a very interesting topic indeed, let me see if I can do something around that one of these days!

      @@cactusjoeYes, I remember that we already chatted once about thise "name game", haha😂 One e.g. starts with the confusion between Parodia/Notocactus/Eriocactus and then there really is no end in this taxonomy battle😅

    Very nice, Joe. The abdelkuri certainly caught my eye for next grow season. I have my import license now, but the expense to use it mounts up pretty fast for items that we can buy within the United States with a little bit of patience. Do you do any cleaning effort of plants when shipped bare root or no pots included? When is Juno's Christmas unboxing scheduled? It will have to really be something to match yours from the last 2 holidays. Thanks for your time, my friend.

    • @cactusjoe

      Many thanks, Bill, glad you liked it and as always very much appreciated, my friend! Haha, Juno is like me, will take any opportunity to justify a good unboxing of treats, lol! And there are indeed two great big chewing bones to be unboxed, waiting for her for Christmas, haha! Yeah, I would also think that if you can, then purchasing your plants from within the U.S. makes a lot more sense, as costs do add up quickly when importing, plus the journey for the plants is significantly shorter of course.
      Yes, I do always inspect my new plants for potential pests and bugs, on the stems as well as roots of course - so if they arrive in pots, I also just carefully tip them out of their pots so I can take a look at the substrate and roots along the walls of the pot. If there are mealy bugs, e.g., then they will almost always be visible at the interface substrate/pot, so the inside wall of the pot. And also, it is a good idea to keep the new plants slightly isolated from the main collection for about two weeks, before joining them. Thanks again, Bill, and have a wonderful Sunday and week ahead!

      No, I don't do that. A lot of plants are not too happy, getting alcohol on their epidermis. So I use that only if I have to remove mealy bugs.

Haha, brilliant comments, great to hear that you like those wooly cacti, and I agree, some of the most beautiful cacti are quite wooly, like Espostoa, Oreocereus, etc. But indeed, some bugs can hide a bit better among the wooly, hairy spines...however I have not experienced these plants to be particularly more infested, to the contrary they seem to not be so tasty for many bugs and pests! Haha, yes exactly, Jacob, you are obviously interested in Greek and Roman mythology, are you? Indeed her name is Juno, so named (1) after the Roman queen of the gods and protector of women and the family (equivalent to Hera in the Greek mythology) - and also (2) because we got her, she's a rescue dog, in the month of June.

    • @jacobsiebert2204

      @@cactusjoeYes, indeed I show interest in these mythologies, mostly because I had 6 years of Latin in school and there we often had stories about these Gods for example that had to be translated from Latin to German. In fact, even though many propose that it is a "dead language" I would say that it is quite useful because you also learn something about history through it AND many English words for example can be derived from their Latin aquivalent 😄

      Hi Pauline, great to hear from you! Thanks for watching and I'm so happy that you are enjoying the videos, really appreciate your awesome feedback! Regarding your Aloe vera, that is quite normal, during the dark, cool and dry winter dormancy period for these large Aloes to curl their leaves inward a bit. That should not be a problem and they will curl back outward again when they are watered and temperatures get warmer again in Spring. It is a very good sign that the leaves are not turning yellow or brown. You could give the plant a bit of water on a sunny day, if you like, best in the morning and just a little, to wet the substrate, no drenching. That is not absolutely necessary but sometimes avoids the plant shriveling and curling all too much. Hope this helps, good luck with your Aloe vera, such wonderful plants to be growing!
