    Similar to your comment about the glued on flowers I've noticed the horrific idea they now have of painting succulent leaves completely, making the poor things unable to get any light! Sainsburys had a few Echeveria left after Halloween covered in bright orange for half price so I just had to save them and pick it all off when I got home.

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good on you, that is a fantastic thing to have done @pjuk , that Echeveria will be forever indebted and will hopefully reward you with beautiful growth and blooms in the future! Yep, I am with you, it is crazy what some plant nurseries and retailers come up with, just to sell more plants...I always really find it sad too, when entire plants have been spray painted and indeed I have a little collection of rescue plants in my collection too! Thanks so much for watching and for your awesome comments and feedback, much appreciated! Happy growing!

    Very good video, Joe. It’s comprehensive. I wish I watched this video before I made my first few cacti purchases. Another one that I hate is when the whole plant is spray-painted. Yuck 🤮

    WOWSERS Joe :-D what an AWESOME and very informative video about what to look for when buying cacti and succulents, Really AMAZING and detailed information about what to look out for when choosing new plants, a lot of the plants sold in the garden centres are often in bad condition and newbies to the hobby may not realise the plants are sick or dying or have pests etc, and brilliant examples you have shared, the BEST video EVER about what to look for when buying a cactus or succulents, and amazingly filmed and edited and put together too, you are incredible at making very professional videos Joe, thanks so much for sharing such an awesome video with us, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Bavaria for a super Sunday XXXX

      WOW, Lyn, thank you a million for your really wonderful, awesome feedback, I am really humbled and happy that you have enjoyed the video! Yep I agree with you, it is a shame to see how very often a lot of plant centers and supermarkets offer cacti and other succulent plants that are in an absolutely terrible condition! And it makes me angry to think, how a lot of newcomers to our hobby are losing lot's of their hard-earned money - and also a lot of their confidence, motivation and fun - when they go ahead and unknowingly buy these, only to lose them shortly afterwards! And unfortunately we all learned these lessons early on in our growing careers, right? Anyways, hopefully a few less of these things happening when people have a chance to get these infos ahead of time, haha! Many thanks once again and very best cactus greetings going out to you and Hans, over on the truly beautiful Emerald Isle! PLANT POWER and happy growing to both of you for an awesome rest of the week!

    Oh, I don't like it when they put fake flowers or eyes on plants. But I always feel sorry for those little guys.
    In my local garden centre, you can buy cactus mix soil. This looks like more sandy soil. Is this not suitable for cacti?
    I always thought you better not repot a new plant right away because of the stress of the moving. ❣️

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Haha, yes I know what you mean, I too always really feel sorry for these poor cacti that had all these totally unnecessary things glued onto them...actually it's sad! From your description I would say that indeed, yes, that sandy soil mix, mixed with some washed sand and/or gritt or pumice sounds quite suitable! Yes, of course it is stressful for a plant to be moved, but it becomes even a lot more stressfull if the plant is standing in completely unsuitable, peaty substrate...and, even worse, then starts to rott because this substrate is far too water-logged and wet!! Hope this makes sense. Best wishes, good luck and happy growing!! Thanks for watching and commenting!! 🙌👍🙏🙏😉🌵🌿🪴🌵🌺🌼😊💚😎☀️

    Fantastic video Joe!! You touched on a lot of great things there! Just bought a group of large seedling cactus, not sure of exact species, columnar . A group of 5 nice plants!! But even though they looked great. After a few days one went sideways!! Rot! The others seem fine, just watching them . As far as the moon cactus, yes, unless regrafted on a hardy stock ( stenocereus) they are destined to die within a couple of years. As Hylocereus never lasts. Oh yes and dangers!!! When I worked at a nursery in California, a very young girl reached out and petted an opuntia microdayses!! I had to help remove the glochids before they were rubbed in!! And yes, of course Euphorbias!! And Adenium, pachypodium!! Danger, danger ,danger!!! As Steve Erwin used to say!! Thanks for this video Joe!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, out to Bavaria, Germany 🇩🇪 have a wonderful day!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!! ✌️💖🌵🌷🌴🌸🌿🌻🍀🌾💐🌱🌹🌳😃👍

      Hey, Clyde! As always, a real pleasure to read your awesome comments and feedback, thank you so much! Yeah, your story of getting those nice looking plants, of which one soon thereafter started to rot, that sounds so familiar and has unfortunately happened to me so many times too, with plants I have purchased at garden or plant centers...that peat substrate is just poison for these plants, plus they have too often just been literally "blown up" to grow from seedlings to selling size in record speeds with the help of cocktails of growth hormones, pesticides and fertilizers!!
      Ouch, that other story of yours, about the girl in that nursery in California where you worked, that happens too often too! I saw exactly the same happen to the person at the checkout of one of the local garden centers here, when she lifted a huge Opuntia microdasys with her bare hands out of a basket, to check on the price, before anyone of us could warn her - obviously she was new in the job and was not aware of these... Oh well, hopefully we can help a few folks avoid these things! Sending you very best cactus greetings over to Morris Park in the Ozarks, USA - Peace, Love, Plants and happy growing my friend!!

    Very good information for future purchases. You covered many things that I was not aware of. I purchased several cacti plants two days ago for next spring since my local nursery had the plants on sale. Unknown to me I did some things immediately that you suggested such as replanting after examining the roots. I just brought the plants into my garage for winter as our temperature here in Ivins Utah is dipping down to 35 degrees F with a chance of snow and high winds. Our summers are brutal with temperatures in the teens for months. This year was the hottest and longest running triple digits in history. It presents a challenge. I’ve won some and lost some but that is the game so thank you and please keep your TH-cam site running.

    Excellent points for us newbies !
    I always come away from your videos with new knowledge to put to use. ie. We're often told not to repot plants as soon as you bring them home, but rather leave them in their nursery pots...
    I remember a chinese evergreen plant that the grower placed in those awful netty plastic pots and by the time I got to repot it, it was too late. The stress of untangling it all was too much for its survival.
    I have learnt alot of lessons along the way that can get very expensive.
    I will now check my newly purchased cacti, gasteria, hawthorias and aloes and place them in a griddy mix.

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Fantastic video! 👍🏻
    It's a really important topic that you tackled here because it could indeed be very frustrating for new growers to buy the "wrong" plants due to a lack of knowledge and then get demotivated. But you did a wonderful job by explaining what to look out for to avoid mistakes.
    I must admit that I really get angry when I see plants with such ornaments clued on to them, for me that's just a violation of these beautiful plants 😕
    I hope it doesn't sound awkward but for me every plant has kind of a personality to it (that's also the reason why I find it very difficult to throw plants away even though they sometimes just can't be rescued anymore due to pests for example), so for me it just feels wrong to treat the plants the way they are often treated in garden centers or supermarkets 😅
    Thank you once again for this brilliant video and until next time! :)

Yep, l totally agree with you, it is a real shame sometimes to see how cacti are simply mistreated in many garden centers and supermarkets...and it is unbelievable how forgiving many of these plants are!! Hope you are having a relaxing and really nice weekend! Best wishes to you for the week ahead!! 🙌🙏🙏👍😉🌵🪴🌵🌸🌼🌺👍💚😎☀️

      Today I was at my local "OBI-Baumarkt" because I needed a new shelf for the basement and then I also had a quick look at the cactus section.
      As expected, many negative aspects you mentioned in the video could be found there too: grafted cacti that probably won't live quite long, far too less light, etiolated stems, clued-on eyes and flowers, wrong substrate, etc. 🫤
      It was horrible to see some of the plants in such bad conditions...
      I at least "rescued" a beautiful tiny Astrophytum (it could be A. ornatum) 😅
      Wishing you also a great week ahead! :)

      @@jacobsiebert2204 thanks Jacob, for your quick summary of your visit to a local garden center's cactus & succulent section...yep indeed, sadly these sort of observations are relatively common in these places. I do recommend buying from specialised cactus nurseries (directly in their greenhouses or their nline shops) ...they may be a little more expensive, but at least the plants are usually much more healthy and in much better shape! Plus, they have proper names and often infos about origin of the seeds too. Hope you are having an excellent week! Thanks again, Kakteengrüße nach Kassel!

      Many thanks, Joanna, really excellent to hear that you found the video and some of the tips useful! So sorry to read about losing your Mammillaria to root mealy bugs...they are indeed nasty! Unfortunately I have had similar experiences on many occasions in the past...and indeed there is a lot of truth to recommendations suggesting one always checks new plants and keeps them isolated from the rest of the collection for at least 2-3 weeks. Basically to monitor for pests and avoid spreading. Thanks for watching and commenting, much appreciated! Have an awesome Sunday, happy growing!! 🙌🙏👍😉🌵🪴🌵🌼🌸🌺💚😎☀️

    Amazing video as always! Really some good tips! Id check roots in the store for does pisky mealey bugs before buying a plant. Also another thing i do is to have a plant app, check what specie it is and then check on llife webpage, if its an easy/medium or hard species to grow.
    Later today i discovered black spots on of my baldianum i bought and it seem to be some kind of a fungle.. neem oil does not work .. annoying! I think buying from true cactus nurserys is the way to go to advoid pest and peat soils. Keep up the good work.

    I have a question ..when we purchase cactus plants from a nursery..in 4in pots..how old are the cacti? Does it depend on the species? Do the growers have a time frame before they put the cacti out for selling? Like 2yrs for example??

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Michelle, indeed that is a great question, quite a few folks have asked. The size will definitely depend on the species, as the rate of growth is quite variable across different cactus species! But in general the large, "industrial"-sized cactus nurseries do not want to grow and hold on to plants a day longer than necessary...so of course (unfortunately for us hobbyists) a lot of fertilizers and growth hormones will be used...and cactus seedlings will be "pumped up" to sellable sizes in record speed, often within less than 12-18 months. The health and natural resilience of these plants of course suffers in this process... Plants from smaller sized cactus nurseries will be much better in this respect.

    How do you tell if an old man cactus has spider mites?

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  29 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Great question! That is not at all very easily done, because of the thick layer of thin and wooly spines ('hairs'). You have to carefully lift or move the hairs aside as much as possible, in order to see what the epidermis, or outer skin, of the plant is looking like. If it is a brownish or greyish woody color then it may well be infected with spider mites, and you will have to spray with a pesticide ... The good news is that these cacti do not easily or frequently get infected by mites. Mealy bugs are much more of a threat!!🙏🙏🙏👍🙌😉🌵🪴🌿🌵☀️😎

    Would you water a water sensitive Cactus like an Astrophytum straight away after bringing it home from a Garden centre nursery. How would you know when it was last watered?
    Thanks'

    • @cactusjoe
      @cactusjoe  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Paul, thanks for watching and for your excellent question! No, I would not water it straight away. First I would, if possible, carefully tip it out of it's current pot. If the substrate is dry that should be quite easy. However if wet, then the substrate might cling to the pot a bit more, but at least that answers your question about when last watered, i.e. recently. In both cases I would check for whitish, flour-like patches on the inner side of the pot and roots, i.e. for root mealy bugs ...and treat if present. Also, if the substrate is a very peaty one, this would be the ideal time to carefully remove it and repot in a sandy, gritty and more cactus friendly substrate, to avoid root rot in the future ...especially since Astrophytum indeed are more sensitive, as you correctly state. After repotting, keep out of direct sunlight and no watering for about a week to 10 days, then gradually start watering and move to a bright location. Hope this helps, best of luck and happy growing!! 👍🙌☺️🙏🌵🌵🌼💚😎☀️🙋‍♂️
