    Well, there was a woman who yelled at Churchill. "Go home you drunk man!"
    His reply was simple and a complete roast;
    "Ma'am I'm drunk, but tomorrow I'll be sober and you'll still be ugly"

    If I remember correctly, I believe the speech teddy gave after being shot was about 45 min- 1 hour longish. When Teddy was president, he heard some of his cavalry units were complaining about having to ride 25 miles a day for training. Teddy roosevelt, being a rough rider at heart, jumped on his horse as soon as possible and rode 100 miles in a single day to show his men how actual men go about bussiness.

    Theodore Roosevelt was truly the most American man you could ever think of. His life story is so full of adventures and accomplishments and to think that he was born with severe asthma and a walking disability. He was certainly someone who took life a step further. A man who built himself through fitness, education, and ambition. Went to Ivy League school, served as a police commissioner for New York City, led the most badass military unit during the Spanish-American War; The Rough Riders, a multi-racial cavalry unit. Became the youngest President to be elected into office, invited Booker T Washington to the White House to advise him on to build and support black communities across the country, founded the National Parks and preservation of animals (if it wasn’t for him, the Buffalo would’ve gone extinct long ago). This was a man who was BIGGER than life, if people walked up to you and told you he wrestled a bear, you honestly wouldn’t doubt it. He truly was a man who embodied the American spirit and he is by far my second favorite president, after Abraham Lincoln.

    Something no one has pointed out that some people and maybe even Rich might not know is that when he says "I should stuff you in a pram just so you can throw your toys out" is reference to a British saying of "Throw one's toys out of the pram" which is like a baby throwing a tantrum for not getting it's way and throwing it's toys out of the pram, which is a way the British call baby strollers. Also the Teddy Bear line came from the fact the iconic toy was named after Roosevelt who's nickname was "Teddy"...a nickname which he absolutely HATED.

Two lines here 'I'll battle you on the beaches' and 'I'll fight you to the end and I will never surrender' are references to his famous speeches, where in Britain's darkest days on the verges of invasion from Germany when Churchill was elected in emergency, he had a do-or-die moment to reignite some passion in the demotivated British, and his steeled resolve and stating without hesitation that Britain would fight Germany to the end and never surrender, and that they'll fight them in the air, they'll fight them on the beaches , was just the kind of passionate anger from a leader Britain needed to spark that patriotism. While it's true the war may have ended differently if Pearl Harbor never happened, Churchill was quite the unshakable bulldog.

    If I recall correctly Roosevelt also said at the start of the speech that he had planned a longer speech but because of getting shot he was giving them the short version that lasted for over an hour before heading to the hospital

    Water Closet (or WC for short) is british slang for a toilet. So when he says he TR will give WC the full deuce it's also a double entendre.

    There's more to the line "TR will give WC the full deuce" -- WC in England is also short for "Water Closet" and I bet you can guess which room in the house THAT is! I wonder if Winston ever got teased for his initials or if outhouses were more common where / when he grew up.

    When Teddy survived the assassination attempt, he had a book in his breast pocket. I believe it was a pocket Bible, but could be wrong there. I also believe he started the following speech with the quote, "A bullet can't stop the Bull Moose."

    also, TR's response to being born with asthma and being small and frail? bulk up and become ludicrously fit so asthma couldnt bother him. after brokering peace after the ruso-japanese war, he invited a sumo to the white house. after seeing the sumo and learning the basic rules of the sport, he asks the sumo to wrestle him in the oval office.... "there is nothing quite as invigorating as being thrown about the room by a 400 pound japanese man".
    TR was a beast

  • @pointsur67
    @pointsur67 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Also note that when Teddy said "TR will give WC the full deuce!", WC was also a British term for "Water Closet", or toilet room. Deuce means "peace" here but in the UK, I believe two fingers up meant "F--k you".

    "TR will give WC the full deuce"
    - WC in the UK is short for "waste closet" (toilet)
    > And of course Churchill's initials...
    - Full deuce, two fingers ( the peace sign [deuces]) is "V for victory"
    > As well as "dropping a deuce" in the waste closet....
    This is why Churchill responds with "Whatever shit you throw at me..."
    and "I will battle to the end and I will never surrender" is a historical line by Churchill...
    "Walk softly over here and give my big stick a suckle"
    - Famous Roosevelt quote/ slogan...
    "I speak softly, but I carry a big stick"

    The Pearl Harbor reference was pretty accurate.When Churchill found out about the bombing,he stated he,"Went to bed and slept the sleep of the saved."It wasn't meant to be in any way disrespectful to the U.S,or that he didn't feel terrible about those Americans that were killed.His country was going to lose the war,and he was grateful he'd now have The United States as a powerful ally to win WW2.☺️

    Theodore got shot during his speech and the stuff in his pocket slowed down the bullet. The shooter was taken away and Theodore calmed the crowd by saying "Ladies and gentlemen, I have just been shot. But it takes more than one bullet to take down a bull moose." He then went to the hospital to patch up the wound but refused to have it removed because of the risk of the surgery. So he died with that bullet in his chest.
    A true badass.

    No, The UK is not the size of Alabama. This was an oversight on ERB's end.

    Very clever. An MP in Parliament called Churchhill a drunk. Churchhill responded "I may be drunk, but you're ugly, and in the morning I'll be sober, but you'll still be ugly."
    And TR did actually say "It takes more than that to kill a bull moose!" Admittedly, he was running for a third term under the Bull Moose Party.
    Sorry. Winston had that one.

  • @housel9352
    @housel9352 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well it wasn't his chest that just absorbed the bullet, he had his long speech and his glasses case in his front pocket, both of which helped slow down the bullet which still got stuck in his chest cavity. Roosevelt was a pro hunter, so after he got shot he coughed into his hand to see that there wasn't blood, which meant he didnt get hit in the lung. After he saw that he was fine, that's when he decided to continue his 85 minute speech.
    Even though the bullet got slowed down, he still took it like a man, which is still extremely admirable

    potential recommendations (assuming you haven't seen them): 10 second songs and homestar runner. homestar is a classic and by itself would more than fill the hole left by erb, the cartoons actually predate youtube and they still come out occasionally (plus they're mostly under 3 minutes so you could do a couple at a time).

    I think the reason that the average age of death was so low in the past was because the statistics include infant mortalities. People do live a little longer than they used to on average (like 5-10 years), but the main reason the average life expectancy has gone up is because less infants die in childbirth.

    Roosevelt's speech was super long. He was opposed to it, but kept the length anyways. It was folded up and kept in his breast pocket when he was shot. The speech was so thick it stopped the bullet. Unphased, he continued on to do his speech. No bleeding.

    you think the 1 bullet makes roosevelt a badass? take a closer look at bismarck, the iron chancellor^^
    When Bismarck was close to the Russian Embassy, Cohen-Blind took aim and fired twice from behind; Bismarck spun around and grabbed his attacker, who was able to fire three more shots before soldiers from the 1st Battalion of the 2nd Guards rushed up and took him into custody. Bismarck continued on his way home. Later that night, he allowed the King's physician, Gustav von Lauer, to examine him. Lauer noted that the first three bullets had only grazed Bismarck's body and the last two had ricocheted off the ribs and had caused no major injuries.

    Funnily enough- the "Tomorow I'll be sober and you still be roasted" line is a reference to what WC really said after being confronted by a reporter for being drunk. He responded with something along the line of: "Yes I am very drunk. And you, madam, are very ugly. But tomorrow I'll be sober. And you will still be ugly."
