    Joe is excited to upgrade one of his company's servers. After speaking with the CIO and getting clearance to perform the upgrade overnight, Joe grabs a pizza and straps in for an overnight hardware replacement. A couple hours later, the business is thrown into chaos as Joe's company's international client base is unable to get quotes through their quote generation service. An angry call from the CIO lets Joe know just how badly he's screwed up this time.
    Unfortunately, Joe didn't check his infrastructures dependencies before performing his upgrade. If he had, he would have immediately recognized that bringing down the server would also take the quote generation service offline.
    If Joe had been using Sysaid's ITIL package, he would have had an active CMDB to cross-check his upgrade with. The change management module would have helped ensure that Joe took every step necessary to prevent any unwanted outages. After putting in a change management request, Joe would have seen the issue before it started, and been able to contact the relevant managers to better coordinate the downtime. Through this process Joe could have picked a better day to perform his hardware upgrade.
    Don't be like Joe and risk your company's time, money, and resources on poorly planned changes. The introduction of a detailed CMDB and change management process can be the difference between a smooth upgrade and an international disaster.
    Check us out for more information on our ITIL change management software to prevent Joe-style disasters from happening to you!

    I think that the fact an IT guy has a real freakin office is the funniest part, we all know that the basement is where we are kept.

    SysAid has been a lifesaver for my IT team. With two offices in the same city, we needed to consolidate our teams until we move the entire office into one complex. The mobile support that SysAid offers keeps my IT team connected to my employees throughout the entire day even while they’re travelling between offices. The SysAid system is also extremely efficient in determining priorities, handling each ticket and how it’s distributed to my IT employees, and allows the team to work on problems.

    everything goes smoothly when you already have a CMDB filled with the proper information...

    Yeah - I like this one a lot - I wish I had the time and resources to make my own little videos like this one :-) I hope you guys are going to share a bit more! From one ITSM geek to another :-)

    Of course they left out the part where they needed to hire 3 managers to oversee the system, 2 engineers to document the current system, and 4 IT people to take up the some of the calls that are stacking up while the process now takes 3 times longer to perform. Because of all the extra staff, certification costs, and software. Joe is forced to take a pay cut while all other jobs are outsourced. This reminds me of ISO9K certifications that was put on production in manufacturing just a couple years before everything went to China. But we must remember the important thing, which is the people who are doing the training will make money. :-)

    Hmmm why didn't Joe inspect the old server and plan how to move the installed programs, services, websites and scheduled tasks he found?

    • @sysaid
      @sysaid  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your feedback, Steven! The important thing beyond finding out was was running on the server is to identify the relevant service owners (or involved parties) and to agree on a suitable window to make the change. That's what this video is really about - making change in a collaborative and controlled manner.

    Or if "joe" understood the environment he was apparently managing he would know what dependencies existed, no need for a buzzword, it's called documentation, or just knowing the environment you manage.
    And if a component is that important, why is it running on a single box?
    ITIL can't fix poor design or staff who are clueless about the environment they manage.

    Your boss hardly ever tell you gret job when it's done. However when you fuck up nobody forgets about you. If you're in need of attention don't be like Joe. Screw the whole system and if you make the company bankrupt you will have tons of people thinking of you for ages. =D

    Better yet, skip being joe and be the cio . That way you can get paid the big bucks for joe saving the day , screwing up.
