Wow, what a choice, I've never seen anyone play this on a reaction, very brave 🙂. It's a strange piece, I remember it being played daily when Radio One, the BBC's first 'pop music radio' opened in 1967, it was played at the end of the day, there was no 24-hour broadcasting, everything closed down at night, to George Martin's Theme One... but pretty soon it acquired a strange kind of 'past times' feeling around it, it gets heard in the background mainly, as themes do, and kinda represents all that prog rock wonderfulness from the time. I'm sure it sounds differently hearing it fresh, for me this says 'Nostalgia!' very loudly...

this is ironically one of their most popular songs, apparently it was a hit in Italy!!!

This IS theme music. George Martin -- the guy who produced most of the Beatles albums -- wrote it for the BBC in 1967. VdGG were covering this early on and it was popular enough that they released their version in the early 70's (which went to number one in Italy). This is a good entry point into VdGG, a prog band that can be even more difficult to warm up to than Gentle Giant. But here you don't have to worry about Hammill's singing being a distraction. It's mainly about the keys-drums-sax combo that were the foundation of their sound. And for a drummer, Guy Evans is a must hear (and see, in this case!) He brought so much to that band.

That'd so funny it is... I had no idea because I'm American! I never watched BBC till this year actually lol Dr.Who. I love this grouping of instruments. It makes a very distinct and unique sound. I am totally sold on them.

@@L33Reacts Glad you like it, but reserve judgement until you've heard some of their vocal songs featuring Peter Hammill. I think he's awesome, but for some he can be like nails on a chalkboard. I'm sure you already have some recommendations but I'll put forward "Killer" as a good starting point.

If I remember correctly, it started out as a soundcheck song for them.

Great tune and performance, a pity the organ is mostly lost in the mix. You should listen to Lost or Man-Erg next!

Vlads choices are an exact reflection of the music from my youth- I'm 70 now. I still have the single of this in a picture sleeve. This was the theme song for the late night rock show on BBC radio 1 in the UK- I see Sophia already said this- always good to have confirmation. Can I suggest the songs- The Advent Of Panurge by Gentle Giant or Time And Space by Gnidrolog. Great reaction as usual, thanks.

as other have suggested, the entire pawn hearts album would be amazing reacting content! 3 big amazing tracks, just like close to the edge lmao

I recommend listening to the Pawn Hearts album, starting with Lemmings. It's their darkest, grittiest, most madcap album.

Yes, if Lee can find a time to sit through it, it would be an amazing trip...

I will definitely add it to the list! I am definitely continuing down this rabbit hole. I can't exactly put my finger on it just yet but they are very compelling.

Theme One is on my CD copy of Pawn Hearts, wasn't on the original vinyl I listened to back in the 70s. It's a brilliant album with Lemmings, Man-Erg and what many consider to be VDGGs best Plague of Lighthouse Keepers.
On the 2005 CD there are five more tracks which I'd rate in order best first: "W" , "Dimunitions" , "Theme One", " Angle of Incidents" and finally "Ponker's Theme". I know I'll get hate for rating Dimunitions ahead of Theme One because I get the feeling the former isn't generally liked; for myself it's Hugh's homage to Ligeti but that's just a personal opinion of mine and I've not researched whether that was what he was going for.
If your going to listen to another track from this era (Pawn Hearts) I'd recommend Man-Erg. You should also listen to Plague of Lighthouse Keepers but I'd recommend you listen to some other tracks first, like side one of "H to He, Who Am The Only One" - "Killer" , "House with no door" and "The Emperor in his war room".

Odd choice for a second VDGG reaction, a cover of the UK's Radio 1 theme tune.

Sorry, it was my request 😎
I thought it may be an interesting take, to see their instrumental version. For me personally, the instrumental versions of BAND-MAID songs help a lot to better understand what's going on. In this case, there is no "full" version of this song, it's instrumental by design, but it's one of my favorite VDGG performances, I rewatch it often. David Jackson playing two saxophones at the same time... Hugh Banton going crazy on the keys... Guy Evans killing it on his very modest drumkit... It's a masterpiece.

@@VladimirChupin I'm not complaining, so no need to be sorry, just thought it an odd choice. I don't think I've heard it performed live, if that's what this is a reaction to, so I'm looking forward to it.

The tune was written by George Martin, most famous for producing the Beatles’ albums.
