    Thank you for explaining this. Showing the capacitor and explaining how to tell if it’s bad was what I wanted to see. Also, I learned that you do not need to completely take the fan down from the ceiling to get to the capacitor. I learned a lot from this video.

      It depends on which fan. Some fans do have to be removed for the capacitor to be accessed, because it's inside the motor housing which can't be removed with the downrod pin in the way, which can't be removed when the fan is hanging on the ceiling. It's usually fans without pull chains that are like that, and even then it's not all of them.

    I got a Casablanca Panama 5 few months ago and it had a bad capacitor and the fan wouldn't even start. I replaced the capacitor (and the bearings since it made bearing noise when I first got it working) and it runs like new.

    We have a Hunter old time original outdoor fan, 18 years old, that has to be push started to get it to spin. I opened the cap where the pull chain speed switch is but I don't see a capacitor! There is only the direction switch, the 3 speed pull chain switch and the wires, but no Capacitor. Where else could it be?

    @Fix Them Things. I have a question please. Why is it that when the original capacitor of a ceiling fan gets spoiled and you replace it with a different one, the fan speed from 1 to 5 is basically the same high speed instead of it been normal like 1 been the slowest, then 2 will be a little high and the last speed which is 5 been the highest speed?

    • @fixthemthings
      @fixthemthings  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like your pull switch is bad. When you are on the highest speed the cap is not used. If you use the pull switch a lot then it’s highly possible that it is the problem. Also, some of the switches have push in wires that don’t make good contact. I tried posting a circuit diagram here but TH-cam won’t let me paste it.

    Mine won't run but if I start it by hand it will work on any speed, and continue to work. Turn it off and wait a while and it won't work again. Thought maybe it was bad connection in a wire nut but checked all those and they are tight. Ideas? Just a bad motor?

    • @fixthemthings
      @fixthemthings  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SB H that is the perfect example of a bad capacitor. The capacitor basically jump starts the motor to get it going. So when you push it by hand you act as a capacitor. Replace your capacitor and it should fix it.

      First ,I have to say I am not an expert on this. The values you mention looks like it may be OK. If you go too high you can burn out the windings. The speeds may be different. It would be best to get the proper capacitor specified for the motor.

  • @Painfulwhale360
    @Painfulwhale360 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I assume my fan has a bad capacitor. It randomly stopped working one day and I would try it once in awhile and sometimes I would hear a hum with the fan turning very slowly if at all and most of the time it wouldn’t turn at all and would just make a hum. I’m hoping it’s the capacitor since the fan is only 4 years old and was original to the house we bought a year ago. Seems to me that’s not a very long time for a fan to stop working

    • @fixthemthings
      @fixthemthings  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try spinning it when it hums. It may keep going. That tells me it s the capacitor. Lightning can also take out these capacitors. Most of the time they go bad with age.

    • @Painfulwhale360
      @Painfulwhale360 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fixthemthings Back when it was working at all I would try to spin it and it would slow down to the point of not running anymore and would still hum so I would have to shut off the switch. Thanks for sharing your expertise with us. When I checked my capacitor, it wasn't bubbly but it did have some rusty dust on it. It's the second time our fan has died on us. Would you rather this could be the regulator switch in the wall? Cuz the last time, the electrician changed the regulator, said the fan capacitor was fine. I would like your expert advice on this. Thanks

    • @fixthemthings
      @fixthemthings  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Enigmatic definitely!!! Not sure about “regulator” switch. I think you mean the wall switch or pull chain switch. Could be either. If they pushed the wire into the hole on the wall switch it is possible it has a bad connection. Probably not, but possible. I always wrap the wires around the screw for better connection on the wall switches. The pull chain switch is more of a problem as those wires usually are pushed in and the switches are cheaply made. They will fail from excessive pulling. In my experiences it is almost always the capacitors. Usually after lightning storms.

      @@fixthemthings Thanks for replying. Yes, it's like a dimmer switch from which we can select the speed of the fan and such. Anyway, I agree with you too. I think I need that capacitor changed along with the whole wall socket board too. It's an old house and switches are dying on us. Better to get a new one installed all the way.
      P. S if it had only been the capacitor I would've changed it, but for this definitely we'll be needing a proper electrician.

      Reverse switch wouldn't really slow down the fan. The factors that slow down the fan includes:
      Bad capacitor.
      Overpitched blade arm.
      Bad bearings, but there would be short spin down before obviously slowed down high.

      Probably not. The cap is only for the motor speeds. Sounds like pull chain switch or something further upstream like loose wires at wall switch or wire nuts. Could be bad connection at outlet where they tapped switch from. If the wires are stabbed in the back of the outlet, it could be burnt. A good electrician will wrap the screws instead of stab in the back.

    When you say “no power” do you mean just the switch being turned off? Or cutting the power to that section by flipping breakers?

    I want to a ceiling fan and light store and they were not able to help me with a capacitor. They said it was very hard to find one for an old Casablanca ceiling fan. Is that true?

    • @fixthemthings
      @fixthemthings  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The best thing to do is look at the capacitor in your fan for a part number and do a search. If you can’t read the part number make a note on how many wires and colors. I ordered mine online. You should be able to find one for $10-15.

    Has a loose set screw on the downrod as well, causing all that left-to-right motion. I’d have tighten that up too while there. Turn and a half with a Phillips head.

    @Fix Them Things, I am at my wits end to find a capacitor.I am aware they are all over, but one I need per spec no.I will start in short with the fan.I have no id of fan of which, my luck.I have a hunch it is a Harbor Breeze.I may suspect it is on top of motor and will have to rip whole fan down.2 foot blades, big size fan, ceiling.Worked for years as it is older nowFan has light duty on it in use.Kept it clean in room of house.Had a issue of ran on high speed and med.Low it would stop and hum.Went on for years I guess.Anyway, today I broke the speed switch.I get inside fan and inspect and indeed switch for speed is broke case cracked bad.Three speed switch.I see also the capacitor is on it's way to the dump.Has a large knot on it swelled up.I have the switch to replace issue is, capacitor.Hate to toss fan knowing it is capacitor.Finding my capacitor is a joke.On it is all and I mean all listed.RU.Below that is #E158584.Middle is, 1.75uf below is, R line straight out to Y.Below is, line out to P.Below is, 3uf.Below is, 250vac 60hz T 70*c.I work on electronics so, I understand most this.Except I can't seem to get a clear part number.I run everything comes back to capacitors for sale 1.5uf 3uf.I can't say for sure if that will impact the start or run of fan 1.5 from 1.75.So, with all said I need a 3 wire red blue yellow capacitor 1.75uf 3uf.Where is that exact one at?

Hi thanks for getting back to me no I'd have not found anything on the web I will look again today but I see that the one of the cables from the capacitor was not connected, i connected it to a black grounding cable that's hanging from the rest of the fan and I don't thinkt all the wires are connected correctly it because when I connected the cable to the black grounding cable are the fan now only works on superfast so I think the there's three cables on one side and two on the other side I will I need to know how they're connected

    Hi +Fix Them Things!,
    From 2 days whenever I switched on my ceiling fan it started at high speed and then intermittently became slow, picked up speed. I suspected a loose capacitor connection, but didn't confirm so. Today after around 2 minutes of switching it on there was a small spark and the fan & all other electric/electronic appliances went off in the room as circuit breaker tripped.
    When I inspected there was a loose capacitor wire for sure. I removed some more plastic coating from its front end and inserted it well. However, it seems it didn't work. Do you think capacitor suddenly getting disconnected from the running fan damaged its winding or something?

    • @fixthemthings
      @fixthemthings  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      watawonderfulworld I would think either the capacitor or switch is bad. The switches usually just have the wires pushed in which make a terrible connection. Tripping the breaker is either a short circuit or an overload which I assume tripped due to the loose wire on the cap touching metal (short). Does it run at all?

    • @watawonderfulworld
      @watawonderfulworld 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No... It doesn't run now. It just stays put makin a buzzing sound until I give it a little push after which it starts but rotates too slowly.

    • @fixthemthings
      @fixthemthings  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ok. That's good. You need a new capacitor or your leads are not connected good. Do not try to run it until you get a new capacitor or check the connection. The capacitor starts the motor and adjusts the speeds through the pull switch. Since you had to give it a kickstart push, that proves it is a capacitor problem. Hope that helps you.

    Wirenuts... I so hate wirenuts or end-crimps (you can uncrimp those with some pliers by squeezingthe sides, saves wire and the effort of stripping) for that matter. Wago 221 all the way for me in every electronics job. Those work with all kinds of wire at least.

    • @TheLarryBrown
      @TheLarryBrown ปีที่แล้ว

      Nobody's ever heard of those. Wire nuts do the job fine, are cheap, easy to buy anywhere, any DIY guys has loads of them already, pros use them, they are the go to tool in all AC work, they are easy to use and understand, and require no tool. They have zero downside unless you just want to be different. If you can't buy those Wagos at Home Depot what's the point in even bringing them up?

    • @LogiForce86
      @LogiForce86 ปีที่แล้ว

      @TheLarryBrown Because I have a Bauhaus where I can get them. We are on different continents, but Wago is available in the USA as far as I know. Also the advantage of Wago is it is reusable and easy to make changes or add additional wires if needed.

    • @fixthemthings

      Will the fan turn on if you spin it by hand then stay running (try pulling switch and try all three speeds)? If not, then the pull switch may be bad.

    @almas7123 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    My fan won’t stop running. Control is on my wall. Control won’t shut off, change speed or turn on fan lights. Don’t want to buy controller or receiver and learn that wasn’t the issue. Suggestions? Also pulled only fan chain and won’t do anything. If I turn breaker back on, fan blades continue on.
