Just as a heads up. You can fix the old switch, what happens is over time the spring gets worn out and stretched. So it just needs to be adjusted. Takes only a few minutes to figure out what position works best for the upper leg so that it springs back the chain just one notch. Good video though

@@shannybrown4186 I am having the exact same problem. Did you ever figure it out? I am wondering if it is a faulty switch? Did you find a solution that you can share with me, since no one helped you?

I love how you avoided displaying a logo and music, and the introduction about what ceiling fans are for. You said, "hello TH-cam" and got right to clear, step by step instructions. Thanks for doing this and for providing the Amazon link.

Only reason I'm hesitant to take on something like this is because I can get the wires goofed up so easily but thankfully it looks pretty easy. Not like we have to hook up a whole breaker box, which would take me weeks!

Thank you so much for making this vid. For the past couple weeks I've been dealing with my wife complaining that it's too cold in our apartment when the fan light is on because the fan is running as a result of the broken chain. I clicked the link in the description to buy the switcher and got it in a couple days. Matter of fact I was suppose to get it in one day but there was a delay and I end up getting it in two days. Amazon was kind enough to give me a full refund on the shipping cost which was $10. It took must about 15 mins to get the job done while drinking a beer. (crown royal apple in the can) Very easy to do. Only needed a screw driver. Thx so much!!

Others have said this but people like you, who make how to videos for simple fixes (that otherwise seem intimidating) are a treasure! ❤. My fan pull broke a while ago and I thought I would have to replace it. Thank you for this!! $8 order from Amazon and literally ten minutes and it's fixed. The hardest part was not falling off my bed while trying to unscrew the light fixture. (Bonus because my fan pull mechanism was housed within my light fixture, so I took the whole thing to a table and connected everything. No more sweating in the middle of the night! 😊

-- It's the simple "annoying" little projects that at times may seem tedious -- SO many won't even try to attack a project like this. YOUR VIDEO -- gave my wife the ability to fix our ceiling fan -- while I was out of town. SO BRAVO TO YOU --- and THANK YOU.

No matter how many years have passed, this is still beneficial to anyone who is trying to fix their ceiling fan mechanism. I have at least two of them either stuck in an on position that no longer functional or the entire chain broke off from the switch. So in summer time either hot to death because it is stuck at the lowest speed or in winter time cold to death because I need to have the lights on with low speed fan on.

I found this video very helpful to fix a broken pull chain on a Hunter fan. It broke very close to the switch. I was able to get the switch apart & back together. When I took it apart, the trick to getting it back together: the spring is springy BOTH ways.
I needed to load (turn) the spring the opposite of what I first thought. Still took some time & patience.

The pull chain switch itself(which you said the spring unwinds and is difficult to put back together) Is actually really, really easy. You just gotta make sure the spring is on the right sides of the nubs that keep it in place, and pull the switch.

Only thing I seemed to weirdly have a problem with was connecting the extension chain back on at the end 😅 Also if you have a second person to hold the housing you don't need to take that apart and just switch out the old pull switch housing with the new one!

Thanks for the video, it helped me replace the switch on mine. My chain wasn’t broken, but the switch no longer clicked and didn’t work. Another commenter either here or in a different video suggested squirting a little WD40 into the switch. After I replaced mine I tried a bit of Seafoam Deep Creep in the old switch and sure enough it started working again. I should have tried that first.

Thanks for the help! I even had the same kind of switch. The hardest part was getting the wires out of the old switch. I ended up just cracking it open with a pair of channel locks.

Had to cut my pull chains off the ceiling fans over the beds in the house, about 4 years ago, because my (autistic, cognitively disabled) son became fascinated with blood and started turning on fans and sticking his head up in them. Praying he's finally over the phase (but pulled CF from his room, just in case... gads I hate 8' ceilings) and am having to redo the pull switches. Wish I'd seen your video first. Clear (verbal instructions), unobstructed (video... you're not blocking the view of anything with giant paw hands like another video I wasted my time on - lol), and easy. THANK!! YOU!!

...if anyone comes along and thinks that they can just pop open the old boxes: You probably can - I did in about 30 minutes (after I finally got a 'F it' attitude on whether I broke the old box in the process) and when the stupid thing opened... IT OPENED! All over my kitchen floor. Spring and chain remnant and some sort of gear that fell under the pantry door and I didn't find until the next day. ***JUST BUY THE NEW BOX***, especially if you hate contributing to the swear jar. It's cheaper.

I don't know if anyone has noted this already. The slots for the wires are numbered on top of the switch (black side). Before removing the old switch, take a picture or note the slot number and the matching colored wire. A new switch may have the numbers in a different order. I had this issue. I followed the video and inserted the wires in the same order as the old switch. When the fan didn't work, I found a different video that mentioned the numbers. On my new switch, two of the numbers were reversed. The fan worked when I switched the wires to match the slot number. Also, my old switch didn't have tabs to take it apart. I used a mini screwdriver, inserted into the slot to push back the holding pin, and the wires easily came out. Be sure to turn off the circuit breaker and use caution.

Thank you, your instructions are clear and it was easy to make the repair. QUESTION: Is there a reason why only one of the speeds of the fan works? It's a 3 speed fan, and the pull seems to move through all three speeds, but the fan itself only moves with one of the clicks. Thank you.

    • @ChrisAsipyan
      @ChrisAsipyan  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

There can be many different reasons... One of the common reasons is a weak capacitor that's going bad.

I put a like. This video helped me. My bottom portion you reference in the first 20 seconds of the video didnt come out when I removed all 3 screws on my super old ceiling fan. So after verifying with the first video that came up (this one), I tried again with some force, and yanked it off. Replaced my switch in probably 3 min flat and everything was back up and working. Thanks again.

It's actually possible to rewind the spring when putting pull chain switch back together, I had done it before. Also some people get wrong pull chain switch, and most often, I see two low speeds instead of one medium speed.

Came here expecting the video to be about putting the switch back together 🤷‍♂️. I figured it out and it works.
I took apart the switch, the parts fell out, i attached the new chain, and managed to put it back together. It's not impossible at all, just maybe not obvious how it goes back together with the spring.

Thanks for posting the video. I ended up cutting off the green threading that goes through the metal framing to get to the inside ball chain. Connected the ball chain from the light and put everything back together. Just an idea if anybody is cheap like me and wants to save $8.
$8 bucks a a fraction of an AMC share, so worth being frugal while we wait for the market to implode.
    Thanks again for vid!

Thank you! You DA MAN! I've been asking the men in my life to fix mine in the kitchen since the spring ( it's almost Christmas but have been asking since April). And not to take away from their proverbial "Manly Man-ness"😂😂 I've come to you! I'll just inform my man that the " Other Guy fixed it in the first 4 hours of being here while you were at work. Don't be mad sweetie, I just needed lights!" 😂😂😂 I had to hang an over the sink light to have lights period! I figured not cooking would work... I think he goes to the " Other woman for that 😂😂😂"
Thank you from Toronto Canada ❤
(( Also, I am fixing the EXACT same fan/ light ))
