This is a very useful video. I have an identical fan with lights. My lights stopped working 4 day’s ago, just couldn’t imagine what the problem was. I am a widow who had a husband who could fix anything and he did so I never had to call a repairman . I remembered my granddaughter commenting recently how you could go to you tube and find instructions for just about every repair. Glad I took her advice, now I’m waiting for one of my grandkids to follow your instructions and I get to keep my credit card in my wallet 😊. Thanks

Thank you so much, I troubleshooted everything and was left baffled. After finding this culprit, I was able to bypass it to verify it was indeed the regulator. Much respect for saving me a trip to Lowes!

Very clear demonstration of what to do. Thank you!
Initially I had trouble finding my limiter... it was buried within other wires. Quick and simple fix.
One suggestion, before turning power off, and before cutting any wires, it's even easier if you unplug the "white connector" that attaches the entire "light housing" to the fan, once unplugged, the light housing is detached from any electricity and makes finding the limiter, cutting, and splicing wires easier. It's a simple plug. Thanks for sharing... wouldn't have done it without your guidance.

Great video! My wife has been begging me for months to get a new light assembly for our fan. I looked, but couldn't find one I liked and promptly forgot about it. She mentioned it again today (and dozens of times prior) and it got me looking. I was about to drop 80 bucks on one, then just thought I'd try to research to see if it was fixable. I watched your very clear video and 10 minutes later had a perfectly-working light. Thanks so much!

This fix worked for me, thank you! Saved $100+ on a new ceiling fan, and took about 15 minutes to repair. My limiter looked just like yours.

Dude, I was just about to run out and buy another ceiling fan. I assumed that it was a component that went bad, since my wife told me she heard a pop when she flipped the switch. Anyways, I was looking them over and decided, "well, it's not worth attempting to order/replace parts. As luck would have it, we had something come up this morning and couldn't go out when we wanted to look for another fan. In the meantime, I started wondering if anyone else might have had this problem before and made note of it on TH-cam. Found your video in like 5 seconds. It took me all of a 5 minutes to remove the part. Mine was already installed with two wire nuts bridging the two wires. I just removed the component and connected the wires and we're back in business. Thanks a bunch for the video - was most helpful and saved me a $150 or so.

I also have this 3-bulb assembly and I have a few notes: 1. The current indicator 'pen' was detecting current when there were no bulbs, but stopped reading when there were any bulbs installed. 2. Disconnecting the large harness connector makes this job a lot easier since you can take the entire assembly off and work on it on a table. 3. The infamous voltage regulator was well hidden inside a jumble cables where the cables start. I had to cut off a ziptie to get to it. 4. I carefully scraped each bulb socket with a small file so that the center contacts of the sockets were shiny. Years of poor contact (light flickering) had created some type of buildup that would make the bulb center contacts pretty bad so there's a chance it would not have worked even after removing the regulator. Good luck! The fix worked for me!

I have the same model but I removed the regulator and it didn’t work. My issue I believe is the pull chain, you can’t even hear it click. But I believe you have to replace the whole assembly. Do you have the model number by chance?

This works like a charm and super easy..(Tip for whoever sees this. You can disconnect the whole light piece from the fan with the little white quick disconnect.. easier to work with the wire splicing). Thanks again.

Thank you for taking the time to do this! I had a hunch it was a regulator of sorts, just like they do with our water. I did it without having to cut any wires or turn off any breakers. I disconnected the unit and then disconnected the regulator and was able to reconnect the wires by simply plugging them into each other. (Hope that makes sense) THANKS AGAIN!!!

Thanks for saving me the time to troubleshoot. For anyone who sees this, mine was slightly different. It was put together with wire nuts, so I didn't have to cut or strip wires...just removed nuts and component. Then used one of the nuts to bring the two power wires together. Also, I used the disconnect connector shown there to remove the light piece and work on a table.

Great video and was the exact fix I needed. Another suggestion (if made previously, I apologize ... I didn't read through all the comments) ... instead of cutting and splicing, you can just disconnect the pink wire at 2 easy connection points and then plug the black wire into the blue wire. Plastic easy connections fit perfectly! Agree with one previous comment (Jd Cisz), if you unplug the large white connector "box", the removal of the light housing makes the fix even easier. Thanks to all involved in helping this non-handyman actually fix something for once!

Thanks for this! Perfect fix for my fan. Apparently the limiter is only there to prevent the user from putting in lights of too high a wattage (an efficiency measure, not a safety measure) so as long as you don't go nuts you shouldn't experience any decreased life from your bulbs after pulling it.

Awesome video and saved me replacing the fan because Hunter no longer makes the light kit for the model of my ceiling fan. Agree with others in this thread that you don't have to cut any wires. Simply disconnect the regulator at the two plugs, remove the regulator, and then snap the open plugs together and voila!

Thank you so much for this video! We’ve been living with a very dim living room in the evenings for over six months (because the fan lights stop working completely). I finally had enough and bought a new light kit. I actually watched this video to get an idea of what to expect when I installed the kit, but you taught me about this possible underlying issue. After installing the kit and trying every other fix my husband and I could think of (including buying a new light switch for the wall), I tried this. Boom! Let there be light!

I have the same fan with the same problem. I was able to just use the quick disconnects and plug those together and didn't need to strip any wires. So it's a quick fix and no parts needed and only need a screw driver to get the housing off. That's it. I put in LED bulbs too to make sure I don't use too much power. But they work great now. Thanks for your video.

Worked out well, thanks a bunch! Different model that has two black wires connected with the pink wire of the regulator with wire nuts. Awesome fix! Thank you. We have a two-bulb Hunter ceiling fan that gave perfect service until about a week ago, when one of the two E12 bulbs blew. Oddly, the other bulb, which was NOT burned out (as verified in another fixture) wasn't working in the fan either. I figured it was the pull chain switch, so I replaced it. However, that didn't do the trick--still no lights. Then I checked the voltage between the two wires coming into the fan's light asembly, and measured only about 86V, which was strange... it should have been 120V. I believe that the failed regulator was causing the reduction in voltage to the point where the one good bulb would not work, and when I removed that regulator per this video, I had light. Thanks once again.

After disconnecting the pink regulator, I connected the blue and black wires together using their quick connects. They are male/female so they fit right together. I didn't remove the quick connects on the blue and black wires, strip them then tie them back together using a wire nut.

  • @stephenwright7274

I saw this video telling me to cut out the tiny white box (limiter) and a couple other videos with different instructions, telling me to alter the black box.
As far as I could tell, the wires going down to the light didn’t actually go to the black box. The only thing in between the light and the wires coming through the ceiling was the little white box shown in this video.
So I cut it out and put the two wires back together. Like magic the light worked again. So I’m glad I followed the instructions in this video. Thanks for the help!

The device you replaced is not a regulator, it is most likely what is known as a thermal fuse, thermal cutoff, or thermal cutoff fuse. This type of device will 'open' or 'break' the path of current to the lamps if the ambient temperature exceeds the rating of the thermal cutoff fuse. Typical opening temperature is 100C to 160C. Other ratings are possible. You can find these devices in many places such as ebay and/or amazon. Bypassing these (as shown in the video) will allow the lamps to function, however the thermal protection will be gone. Once the thermal fuse opens (due to high local temperature) the electrical path will not reclose when it cools. It only functions once, similar to a normal electrical fuse which also only functions once to provide protection. If it operates it has served its purpose by reacting to local overheating. It should be replaced to bring the overall system back to normal. Again, bypassing it means you move forward at your own risk. I've also seen these type devices in the under-dash heater blower assembly in cars. In this application it also provides protection from overheating for several of the fan speeds.

Apparently my wife turn on the light one day and a spark happened which in turn the light went out, I saw your video and was impressed on how easy it was to fix yourself. I decided to try and fix it myself followed your steps when I opened it up notice it didn’t have a limiter or regulator so I was shocked and decided to ask in that case there is no regulator or limiter what do you do?

Just repaired my three year old Hunter Ceiling where my wife heard a pop and the lights quit working. First thought it was the two 60watt incandescent bulbs, receptacle or light switch. Installed two LED bulbs and no luck, then ended up tracing the open circuit to this little white rectangular part that turns out is called a watt limiter. Took out the watt limiter and connected the power wire using the existing connectors. From what I found out the watt limiter is required as some part of the UL rating and maybe some Federal regulation to prevent consumers from installing larger wattage bulbs and increasing energy use and waste. If the second premise is also true, just shows how stupid some of these energy reduction regulations can be. So for the typical nonskilled consumer a two bit part craps out and disables the light. So the consumer is supposed to spend $50 to $100 to call out an appliance repairman to fix the light or just throw the ceiling fan away, buy and install another one. So much for all the so-called Green energy savings.

Thanks for the video. Quick question: any reason to not just disconnect the entire light kit at the white plastic harness connector? That should help avoid the need to turn off the breaker, plus allow you to put it on a table, making it easier to work with.

This worked for me without having to strip the connectors off the ends of the blue and black wires. I just removed the regulator, and then connected them directly together since they "clicked" right into place. But let me know if there's a reason for stripping them off. In any case, thanks! This was great.

I'm about to attempt this but have some questions... Why would Hunter add this component into it's design when so many people seems to encounter this issue? Must be a safety concern for them to use it in the design. Wouldn't it be a safer idea to replace it rather than bypass it?
