So delightful to find out Q is a smart secular person. It seems fitting actually.

    • @Questron71
      @Questron71 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

+stiimuli Truly fitting, after all Apollo or the Organians in TOS and Q in TNG are the "physical" representation of Clarke's famous law that on a high enough level of sophistication technology can become indistinguishable from magic... Q is just putting it even a level higher by melting together technological sophistication and evolutionary advancement into "persons" being able of incredible degrees of manipulation of energy and matter without visible influence of technology... and "we" or the average (if highly educated) Federation citizen of the 25th century can not determine the methods how they do it or what technology may be hidden behind it.

I get to say, "I knew him when..."! John and I performed on stage together many (oh, so many!) years ago. He was just starting out on his career and I was a mere child. But I still remember John's gentle and considerate bearing. Here I was just a snot-nosed kid and John a grown-up, but he treated me and spoke to me like a fellow-being. I'll never forget that.
Congratulations on your success, John; you earned it and you deserve it.

I envy you… Q was my favorite character on TNG growing up. Star Trek was my window into a safe, affirming, fun, curious, rational world, from a life of fear and isolation. I'm lucky to have *those* memories.

Like many people, I've heard of John De Lancie. My favourite role he played was "Q" in Star Trek. I also remember seeing him in MacGyver, opposite Richard Dean Anderson. I never would've figured him to be an atheist, much less secular.

I also began to question religion at an early age. I was about 8 when I started asking my parents about the illogical bible stories I was taught
. I never liked going to church but was forced to go until I was 14, and by then I had already lost all faith at least 2 years earlier. That was 45 years ago and I haven’t been to church since except for weddings and funerals. I didn’t bring up my children in any religious faith either.
I was never a fan of the Q character because I dislike the idea of an all powerful being. As an atheist I don’t believe gods or godlike beings exist. However after listening to this I’m going to watch the episodes featuring Q again. I suspect I will enjoy them a lot more now.

    This was an awesome interview,
it was intriguing to hear more from deLancie on these issue.
it seem he hint at a book- not a memoir (the third of those eh?),
but maybe a book more on forms of non belief et reason,
or to expound more on his philosophy also?
when will delancie do standup comedy again?!
deLancie's views on 'the Essential Exponential!" would be excellent to hear more about also,
    and what futures deLancie envisage...
maybe even some geopolitics or perspective on history.
    thinkingatheist,
this almost make up for the interviews with atheism+'ers,
    such as dillahunty et shives...

+Deconverted Man Q's also Jesus-Light as he got punished by being made mortal and suffering to the degree of almost dying at the hands of lesser beings he had senselessly tortured before (and afterwards again... D'uh) which might not QUITE be the way a christian would describe the deific nature of Little Yeshua but then they seldom face the truth about their weird little fairy tale book and the cult they've made up around it...

    • @Questron71
      @Questron71 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Deconverted Man
Actually is makes Sisko just badtempered and rude. Had Q wanted he could have transformed him into an amoeba in the blink of an eye (or the time a fingersnip takes)
But then they made Janeway godmother of their new little Q... better than Mary too, isn't she? Not the least because she was not raped by an invisible spirit at age 13/14 (only by Lizard Tommy in Treshold but we do not speak about treshold, or do we?) to create that godling :D
(And i still savor the incident where a german TV magazine or announcer got a horribly wrong translation, turning "godmother" into the literal mother of god in german ;) instead of just the witness to the christening)

I had that question of 'World created' except it was "WOuld you believe the world we know was created in this year of 4500 BC? We think the society that was the basis of our world now started about then. After billions of years the earth was stewing about and life coming and going, man figured out how to create a larger society past clans and this is where our world today started." and then pulled out the bible and I thought "oh no no no." he then said "This is the product of such a society but it is the work of man's hand. A guidebook, not a history book, if you keep that in mind." I could get behind that.

Hi Seth, regarding an "atheist rock" theme next week, you might check out my favorite band, Nightwish, and their most recent album Endless Forms Most Beautiful. It's all themed around Darwin's Origin of Species, and even includes voice work from Richard Dawkins. They aren't an atheist group (past songs make that debatable) but the album is a great touch on relevant subject matter!

I kind of do. All the great stories I have watched and read kind live in me. At times I have to have little chats with myself to reestablish the boundaries between reality and imagination, and the desires for fantasies to be real.
Isnt it a personal responsibility to learn critical thinking skills, to grow into a human capable of holding truth and rejecting falsehood?
I suppose some dont hold that to be true, and others do and yet believe silly things...

Seth had the only person with a voice that can outshine his, John de Lancie. Suspiciously his microphone is not that good.

Mr. de Lancie is a very good actor, but sadly he's most well known for a character I disliked, Q. :(

I loved the character, but, this guy was a dick at a Trek convention I took a nephew to in the early 90's. Maybe he's mellowed, so, I'm listening.

look up star trek, the next generation and then if you want to see an episode with him in it, find one with a Q in the title

      +mikeyvester Did he really?
Q did stuff for mankind that alloved "us" to survive in a place we othervise would had died out in.
This is most easily seen in Q WHO but each time Q appeard it was with a purpouse behind the obvious purpouse.
And remember the one that act like a fool is always seen as a lesser threatening thing to deal with.
Doctor Who is entierly based on that notion.

I hope you understand the Star Trek and Dr. Who are just stories. This reminds me of a couple friends that used to get into fist fights about whether the Enterprise is more powerful than the Tardis.

      mikeyvester WTF Ar You saying??!
      Arent they real?
      OMG
The Doctor and his older sister will just not stand for it.
Just because the Doctors mother had to travel into a previous Universetimeline and meet up with his father so he could be born after the Big Bang that was casued by the exploding OMEGA at around the end of 2009 and that crated our classical series Universettimeline; dosent mean You can claim that neither Star Trek nor Doctor Who arent real.
So prove to me our Doctor´s real name is NOT Tony Tyler; Younger brother of Rose Tyler that hooked up with the DoctorDonnahuman Valeyard from inbetween the 12th and final regen and then moved on to have a kid:
A kid that made our Doctors life a living hell epecially after he/she died when Gallifrey was transported away from the classic series Universetimeline (seen 1963-2006; 2010 and 2013)and ascended into becoming the new Black Guardian of time in the "new" Universetimeline (seen 2006-2010 2010-2015)that was Created on 26th of June 2010 after the TARDIS exploded as per mentioned in the series 2 episode "Doomsday" and later seen in series 5 episode "Big Bang".
SO DOnt You DARE Speak to me about this not being real just because our Doctor is a hybrid born by parents from 2 diffrent Universetimelines!!!!
