    I'm a westerner but a secret fantasy of mine is to live in a traditional Japanese house. I find the atmosphere to be so peaceful and calming. Who know, maybe I will some day!

    • @samuraidivingswife
      @samuraidivingswife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      It is indeed peaceful. Even their modern house is peaceful partly because they’re observing a minimalist culture and old Japanese people love gardening so most of the houses have trees or plants which makes the houses’ ambiance more relaxing. It’s really nice to have a tea in the afternoon while watching the sky, the view, feeling the soft breeze and the quietness of the place. ❤️ Keep safe Sir and hopefully your fantasy would be a reality soon. 😊😊😊

    This is such a gorgeous japanese house. I can't help but think about the people who used to live here way back centuries ago wearing traditional japanese clothes, women in kimono and men in hakama. The exterior looks really beautiful and if I were to guess, the residents must be probably wealthy. The landscape alone is breathtaking but the house made it more appealing.

      Well, this is very much a home for show. Lived-in Japanese houses are typically very cluttered, in my experience. Since the land area in cities is scarce, they use up every inch of space. Castles, temples, estates, and other preserved homes are kept uncluttered simply by virtue of not being used as living space. Even rural homes I've seen are still cluttered inside. There is a minimalism to them, but not in the way you would think.

    I grew up in the mid-1960's to the early 1980's in a home were my parents raised us to remove our shoes. I never thought of it as strange as it was for the purposes of maintaining maximum cleanliness in the home. However many others in our extended family and neighborhood didn't adhere to this practice and I have to say that I felt as though their homes weren't as orderly. BTW....we were very much blue-collar.

      Same for peasants, just smaller, maybe two or three rooms, but tatami mats, an elevated place for feet - same. I think the insistence on keeping feet clean was to protect the tatami from getting dirt, sand and rocks in, which would ruin them. Since it is tropical, even the wealthy however, cooked outside in a shed-type structure - so as not to heat the house in summer.

      Thank you. 😊 These houses did not feature bath or ofuro because they have slightly renovated it and it’s off limit to visitors. They already have a modern toilet as well. But I believe that most Japanese houses have bath as it is an essential for them. Yes, it’s cold during winter but very comfortable during spring and summer. 😊

    • @paullangford8179
      @paullangford8179 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They have "hot spots" where people gather and sit, around a firepit and with coverings to keep warm: the actual overall temperature was traditionally fairly low in the winter, but not freezing. The engawa ( the surrounding narrow verandah) would usually be closed off with screens, so that gave an extra "layer" of insulation enclosing the entire house.

    The have modern style urinals--two! But I saw no sit-down toilet. Japanese have the fanciest toilets anywhere. I expect an old style Japanese house to have either the old-fashioned floor toilet basin, or the even older outhouse, hence the small night door.

    One question I've always had about traditional Japanese (and really Asian) houses is if the shoes are considered dirty, what do people in wheelchairs do? The chair goes from outdoors into your house. I guess some people may have another chair for indoors only, but for others that is probably impractical. So...is it also rude/dirty to bring the chair into the house? I would also imagine that it could ruin tatami. But surely some elderly people have to use them so they must find a way.

    • @samuraidivingswife
      @samuraidivingswife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We don’t have any experiences yet of people using wheelchair in our house however I have read an article saying usually people on wheelchair leave their wheelchair outside probably in their genkan and crawl when indoors but this would also depend on the accessibility of your house.
      www.accessible-japan.com/japanese-genkan-accessibility/
      For instance if you have a more spacious home and if your flooring is wood then they may have a spare of wheelchair for indoor use. Given that Japanese are so meticulous with cleanliness, they even have different slippers for bathroom usage, indoors and outdoors. But then again, this depends entirely on the owners of the house.

    • @samuraidivingswife
      @samuraidivingswife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChaojianZhang the kitchen model of the first house is a little bit different from the second. If you will notice, the door from the bedroom to the kitchen, in the first house, is a sliding door and is widely open making way for light to come in. On the other hand, the second kitchen has a more modern door and it’s closed. The windows are also shut, there’s no electricity so it’s dark. 😊 Hope I’ve answered your question.

    Well, Americans are not going to be happy with every room rather empty and void of every thing?? Where's the T.V. and every thing else one depends on for every day life,? and no we sit on chairs the dogs lay on the floor. we eat at a table with a chair up off the floor, that would be so hard on ones back and very hard to get food down ones stomach.
