Tiny Ancient Egyptian Wooden Lock Box

  • I tried to make a tiny version of an ancient Egyptian wooden lock. Did I pull it off? I’ve seen several people make a wooden lock, but I wanted to try to do it on a much smaller scale. Can I make one for small project such as wooden box? I made a wood box with a lid that pivots. The wooden lock has a latch that locks the lid from underneath.
I saw an episode of The Woodwright’s Shop in which Roy Underhill was making a wooden lock. This is a design that’s been around since Ancient Egypt. If you’ve never tried to make an ancient Egyptian wooden lock I recommend giving it a shot. It’s a really cool woodworking project. Oh, and as always with my videos, make sure you watch until the very end. I often hide things in my videos!

This was an interesting build, not actually knowing what I wanted to make when I started. But it worked out well. It's a good brain exercise if you're interested in testing your creativity.

My 5 year old great grandson, Eli just watched this with me with great interest, but when the video came to the end, he looked at me and said "Papa, that's not real". We both enjoyed the build though and Eli found that part believable. Good job my friend!!

I love the sentiment at the beginning of this, "I don't have a project on mind, but I want to make this part, so we'll see where it goes"
I relate to that so much, and it infuriates those around me as they can't understand why I would do something if I don't have a use for it

    • @NewtonMakes

That's how we grow as makers.

@@NewtonMakes I find it hard to get non makers (at least people who don't see themselves as such, even though I think almost all people are, just in different ways) to see it as such.
Then when you can do/fix/make something, they ask how on earth you know/learned how to do that. Lol

It's a beauty. I made myself one a couple of years ago, with some rubber bands so it could work in any upsidedown. I truly loved it!

Some of those pieces were pretty tiny. It was a little tricky making the cuts, but overall a fairly simple design. Which is why it's so cool.

Then every thief would know how to open it, kinda beats the design idea don't you think? At least for now, the treasure is safe.

    • @NewtonMakes

It was a bit challenging to figure out how to apply it to a project, but the build itself is fairly straightforward. You shouldn't have any problems making it.
