"I've been thinking that the sunshine is a gaslight" is so glossed over in the song for how much of a banger line it is. It addresses so bluntly the reality of how one's positive mood swings can make them forget that they're ill and think that they had been making all of their symptoms up. It's like when you're happy you've always been happy, and when you're sad you've always been sad, so you completely forget the true horrors of your low moods and it can be easy to feel terrible about yourself because of that and feed back into the cycle. And it ALSO refers to the sun being a literal light made out of gas. Fucking banger.
@@Starving_indev it means all of the things people say it means. i'm pretty sure it directly translates to "i am that (which) i am" but all of them apply in that case
For those who wonders: it's not just a "hebrew part", it's one of the names assigned to the God of Israel in Torah, one of the names given to Moses directly from God, it, however, can be translated (the approximate translation would be "I will be who I will be", but I would argue the translation "I will be the way I will be, it is bulkier, but transfers more of the original meaning). In Hebrew Bible it is presented alongside other names, such as Elohim and Yhwe (the ladder, actualy, being an acronim, that in the full form can be itself translated to "was, is and will be")
Important to note is that "I will be who I will be" is a literal translation of the phrase אהיה אשר אהיה that doesn't take into account context, and יהוה (YHWH), which you've written as YHWE, doesn't have a definite origin, but it likely comes from a proto-Hebrew verb meaning "to be". (Also relevant to mention is that while originating from Exodus, אהיה אשר אהיה is commonly used by non-Jewish Hebrew speakers like a saying in English)
As a Jew and a Hebrew speaker, adding that it means God cannot be defined by regular things, and is "what 'he' is". I love this quote in the context of this song, because it is talking about certainty and definition while the quote basically says that God can't have one, and also that it is possible to just be. Very fitting for Will Wood and his genius songwriting, I hope I explained it well since it's a complicated thing to explain. Edit: especially in the last part, when "give me that old time religion" is repeated, because religion and god are not definite things, and for some people "it's good enough", but in more modern times when everything needs to be certain it's not good enough for them anymore, because they can only believe what is proven and known for a fact.
BEST SELF-ISH SONG. i love the chorus, i love the hmmsigi references, i love the lyric about the sun being a gaslight, i love the lyrics in general, i love the detail that the hebrew part only fits the rhyme scheme when it’s translated into english, i love everything about this. tysm for the lyric video! let’s hope this song gets as popular as some of their other songs have!

holy SHIT
SO THATS MY PROBLEM
holy shit you worded that perfectly
“Hand me my shovel. I’m going in.”
* snap *
“Well this sucks.”
""I should know better than this by now""
"That I could, I could"
"""You can break a shovel again for next's new ground!!"""

The way he says אֶהְיֶה אֲשֶׁר אֶהְיֶה is just perfect
The Hebrew part means "I am who I am"
i know this is late but it actually translates to "I will be who I will be"
"Will be who I will be" is a better translation

Is just to protect you from

You should know better than that by now
It's not profound to know that you can never know
I noticed that the sunshine is a gaslight
I'm hoping that this one might be my past life
My Lord, I know enough to get my facts right
And that's good enough for me
And everything and everyone will die soon
And there'll be nothing left for us to lie to
No matter what we seek, you'll never find the truth
And that's good enough for me
So, gimme that old time religion
Gimme that old time religion
Gimme that old time religion
It's good enough for me
Gimme that old time religion
Gimme that old time religion
Gimme that old time religion
It's good enough for
Not enough for
Good enough for me
You can break a shovel when you break new ground
You dig dirt up when you dig deep down
You should know better than that by now
It's not profound to know that you could, you could
