1990's Virgil is still 100 years ahead of every drummer today. In the early 2000's I had a 30-second .mp4 clip of that final tune, which I watched on repeat. Thanks for sharing the full performance!
I had this VHS. literally wore the tape out, was my prized possession. There’s a very real argument that this was one of the more important solo drum performances in history. It really changed the landscape and heralded Virgil’s arrival on the international scene. It’s never been the same since.
You were so lucky to happen to have this back in the day. I would’ve killed for this tape!
Indeed Virgil upped the ante HARDCORE. Amazing performance i remember it too, as i became a Virgil fan with the release of the first Planet X album. The one titled Planet X, the band was just "Derek Sherinian" , Planet X THE BAND, saw them in Boston '02. AMAZING
I bought this at my local drum store in 98 in little old SA Australia for $70. I also watched it to death and IN AWE every time. I still
watch any copy I can find lol. So thank for the dl.
You stole my comment haha🤘 this, the Steve Smith video, Gary Chaffee phrasing and motion and the live Horacio modern drummer with Micheal Becker...VHS slow motion, a pen and note pad was taking advantage of technology back then

Nice, I’ve got this VHS too. Bought it 23 years ago. I must’ve seen it a million times. Yeah, at this point in time, Virgil was barely starting to make waves in America. I had known about him since the mid-90s, But it wasn’t until this performance that I got to see him play. The first time I saw this performance. Needless to say my mind was blown and I’ve been a fan ever since. Thanks for taking the time to upload this. 👍
Glad to see Virgil almost lose a stick once or twice. I thought he wasn't human until that point right there... Unless his programming did that on purpose so we would think that O.o
He took traditional grip drumming to a whole new level, plays clean and heavy 🦾🦿
The greatest prog drummer of all time. He is heads and shoulders above everyone else when it comes to technique and approach. Realize that this video is 26 years old. Drummers today are playing on super expensive direct drive double pedals and here's Virgil killing it on a basic Premier double pedal. It's all about your commitment to the instrument and the passion behind every stroke.
Unreal! Don’t see any drummer these days Better than this! Also trad grip insane!!
His style is fusion tho
I expected this nonsense GOAT comment
This was the day I knew anything was possible on the drums . Anything
Great! Do You have material of him playing with tribal tech?
I bought this vid when it came out at Billy Hyde’s Sydney…I played it to death but over the years and a couple of house moves its was lost…I searched and searched to no avail and now here it is…thank you so much for posting this. I believe this is one of the most important and influential drumming performances, period.
No better drummer in world
There are a lot of more musical drummers
I met virge at the AUDW and got him and mike mangini to sign a pearl poster for me that i still have framed. Monster player, the more i learn, the more i understand how far ahead he really is. If you dont know about metric modulation, layering, sub divisions, dynamics, polyrhythms, 4 way independence then a whole lot of what he is doing just goes over your head. My drum teacher has helped me really dive deep into this stuff, that is Grant Collins, another aussie and extremely advanced in indepdence
45:06 - This is one sick fill. Amazing player.

There you go brother! Find your way through his style and phrasing.
God is Love❤
we in australia saw him play when he was young in cover bands . For me that was more of a buzz than seeing him now . Don't know why ?
Yep me too .
Frank Corniola recorded his whole gig in 1994 at the Grainstore nightclub Melbourne .
I asked him for a copy he gave some bs excuse .
Virgil was playing Zeppelin, Chilli Peppers , Pearl Jam etc .
$5 entry

Was gonna say same year as Tony Royster Jrs AMAZING DEBUT.
Yes im old 😜 kimda. Lol
I was there. What a show that was.
Whatever you can share with us is more than welcome. What do you remember from that day?
Man that was a loaded line up. Besides, all the other know drummers hanging out. Met Steve Smith that day, Joe Morello was there, Jim Chapin ( got to talk with all of them)Tony Royster debut there at 12 years old. I remember John Tempesta sitting next to me taking Virgil’s insanity all in. My drum teacher was friends with Horacio from back in Cuba so I got to spend time with him that weekend. Horacio and Pattituccis set was amazing also. But the main thing was the camaraderie and openness of everyone in attendance, all the heavy weights there were willing to take time and talk to everyone and give impromptu lesson on the fly. Fantastic weekend.
Is that a genista? Incredible sound
Lo vi hace mas de 23 en vhs😂😂 jajaja al fin en youtube ...
Suban el del negro hernandez con jhon pattitucci ❤❤

Hell yes BRO! Thank you for uploading the entire thing.
Great video, shame the audio was mixed in Dolby Potato.
Virgil doesn't move with you. You move with Virgil. A truly astounding improve and one of the most influential VHS I had in my arsenal of double bass drummers.
Greattttttt
Thise is Space!
Premier Ginista. Teraverdi Green..
48:00. Those swells and dynamics naice.
The best drummer playing the best drums....
I was there! I went several years around that time. It was all general admission so we’d be in line 5-6 hours to get in the first few rows.
The real drum buffs, the so called 5:30 Club at the time, lining up at the wee hours until the doors open😀
He was in his prime here. such a nice guy met him in Melbourne many times We are from Melbourne .He not now Having a great time in the USA . I sill here .

@@jazzban nice man! I didn't know them. Thanks!
genial!!
Joder..es mi bateria
Yo también sigo usando ese modelo de Premier. Es mejor que muchas baterías top de hoy en día
Miércoles 😂
Always respected musicians trying to push new grounds, never a fan of the guy as he lacked musicality and prioritized complication over the actual music but each to their own (cue "You just dont understand what he's doing" comments ensuing).
Such a tired and cliched criticism to throw out 🥱
@@jonnykk1 Doesnt detract in the slightest of what I say.
My favorite ignorant comment is it's "not musical." I shake my head every time because it's MORE musical as it requires more technical ability and a deeper understanding of music to play at this level. People who worship Gadd and Jordan like simpler playing and think that's how everyone should play. Without guys like Virgil pushing the limits, we'd never know where they are.
@@ShrinkRaptor You just proved my point.
Stable Genius finally God has delivered unto the world an oracle of such grace and depth to finally answer once and for all: "what is music?" Bravissimo!!! 💩💩
Thomas Lang is better by Far
😂😂😂
@@jazzbanLang can play much more technical and faster mangini is much faster too. Fact
@@82mangini What a childish, ignorant comparison between Donati, Mangini and Lang. You don't understand traps brother, don't you?
@@jazzban marco minimann, Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta ALL these brummers are better than Virgil. What is The masterpieces created by Virgil Donato. He only play tô show your technique.
Go and see if I'm around the corner.
