Huey Lewis & The News is one cool bar band in the '80s and used rock as their main theme in most of their songs. In the '80s, their peak success lasts from 1983 to 1987.
@joshhernandez6974 NO disrespect....(I say this only outta ta the pure ❤ of music....) But that's BULL! ROCK N ROLL existed, way...WAY, WAAAAAAYY, before rap, sweetie 😊
At 44 years old I'm just realizing that Huey Lewis has been in the background of my entire life and I didn't know how much I love their music until now
I'm about to turn 40 and I only realized recently that Rodney Dangerfield has been in the background of my life. I've been using the name "Vinny Boombatz" as far back as I can remember, and I can't remember where I first heard it. So imagine my surprise when I heard Rodney say the name in his act when I was watching it about 6 months ago lol.
Was watching the "We Are the World" documentary on Netflix and saw Huey Lewis. This song instantly popped in my head and... here I am. Feb 2024... and it's STILL a hit!!!
Huey and his band and their music helped me unwind after a shift on the cancer ward. I was an RN on the oncology unit and after my shift, where so much sadness and heartache took place, I would listen to them in the car on my way home. It was so therapeutic!!!! Thank you to them all.❤️
I have to agree I had the best nurses when I was in the hospital for two months while I'm recovery I been rocking out to the old music that's when they made music good and it's so relaxing it keeps my mind off of the stressful stuff from the doctors
Hip hop may think it rules today... Pop may think IT is the commander of the modern crowds... But nothing, I repeat, NOTHING beats Rock and Roll... It's the one genre that will never, EVER fall out of fashion. Mic drop.
I'm 41 now, my brother is 19 months younger than I am. When we were little, we'd run around the house singing this song (or trying to!!😂💕). We called it the "Heartbeat Song!" My brother couldn't say Huey Lewis, so he called him " Hooey Wooey" Omg! Great memories!!
Most entertaining concert i ever attended. Ive been to over 150 in my life, and Huey Lewis in Denver in 86 was incredible. There was a electrical problem backstage during the show. While they were fixing it, Huey came out and sat down on the edge of the stage and cracked jokes with the audience. Knock knock jokes, family jokes, jokes about the band and life in general. 15,000 people in Denver's MacNichols arena just having the night of their lives being ENTERTAINED by an Entertainer.
On June 1984, this song stayed at its peak at #6 for 4 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. It's the second consecutive single in the album Sports to peak at #6 after "I Want A New Drug" and before "If This Is It", both peaked at #6 for 2 weeks. When I compare those 3 #6 hits, this song is the best among the 3 followed by "I Want A New Drug" and "If This Is It".
Huey played for our company meeting some years back. He looked way older but he was as fresh and strong from beginning to end of the evening. He played every one of his hits to perfection. Fun stuff. His band was at least half his age.
Sports is an album that's usually not mentioned when it comes to the 80's, but it was a GREAT album. Launched them in to the big time...and their efforts on Back to the Future made them bonafide superstars. And yet, I think this was their best work.
I met Huey back in the day, & I was featured in the "punk audience" when I was 17 yrs. in this very video.Yeah, that's me dancing in the crowd w/the pink spiky punk rock hair, & leather studded bracelets. Wow! Those were the days! Where did all the good times go? Hahaha!
Their earlier work was a bit new wave for my taste, but when Sports came out in 83. I really think they committed their own. Commercially and artistically

After not playing this song for many years I had to go back and learn it for a gig coming up. WOW, this is a really well written song. Great chord changes and the lyrics really nail what rock and roll is all about! Yeah. I can't say enough about what a great song this is.
Perfect, best comment. thank you for commenting on the songwriting. First time I even know what the lyrics are. I never knew. I heard it in the supermarket, came home and had to watch some videos. Looked up the lyrics. I need to watch and listen again - but it’s 3 AM. And this ain’t New York City! Tomorrow. So yours was the perfect last comment I read tonight. Thanks again! ☺️
The Sports tour was the very first concert that I went to. I was close to the stage and when they started playing I thought "What kind of world am I in" The feeling, the vibe, the energy and the music. Thanks to Huey Lewis and the News for sharing the gift of music!
Me too, just a young kid when these songs were on the radio. I always loved the use of the hammond organ cuz i dont remember too many 80's songs that used it as much. Huey made good upbeat music.
I was in Ireland in 1988 as Spanish student improving my poor English, and I remember this song being played on the national "Two FM " station, because My Irish "Family" were quite musical people and had a nice radio in the living room. In fact the guy was the saxophonist of a local band founded in Athlone. It was funny to me the way the word "small" was pronounced by the singer. I love "Huey Lewis and the news" and a lot of the music made between 1964 and 1988.
Back in the day when I was the lead singer in a band, Huey Lewis songs were about the hardest I ever sang, the way he has that kind of controlled holler in his voice

I was 3-4 when this song came out. My mom use to listen to all sorts of music, dad was mostly rock. I was blessed to hear some of the best bands both in person and on the radio. Back then more "heart and soul" went into music, artists played instruments (multiple) and the song told a story. 70s and 80s had the best music in my opinion. I would sing them all too, even if I didn't know the words yet lol!
Off in the distance, unaffected by time and space, I hear that heartbeat just beating on, the Heart of Rock and Roll, IS still beating! Got a nice, steady beat, I can jam with it!
I still love this music
Huey's STILL the man!
Happy 71st birthday to Huey Lewis.

I saw Huey Lewis and the News nine times in concert, they played this song at each and every one! They wouldn’t be “official” without THIS song.
