The second verse of this recording is one of those rare instances where lyrics, melody and production align perfectly. The verse is about respect for the dead, and the church organ provides the perfect fill, followed by the string wash which signifies the peace of the grave. The way this verse comes together leveled me. The perfect moment in a perfect song.
Now that's the motherlode of victories. You don't need any more; Townes was the best. I saw him perform back in the early 1980s. Super glad that a new generation is discovering his talents.
Reminds me of a line from a Townes song. "The old washer woman has finished her cleaning and gone" "Quicksilver Daydreams Of Maria" One of the most beautiful songs ever.
I am struggling emotionally. Have had tecumseh valley on repeat. I feel like Caroline.Dreams that didn't come true. Than this song came on. I have never heard.. I was just recently introduced to Townes. I am just in a puddle of tears. This song is beautiful.
your gonna need a life jacket..o r a little boat..... or u will drown..... in the Sea ....that was Townes Van Zandt's soul.....-...i ve been out there for a long time.... in a little row boat....... a bottle of wine, my guitar and a few harmonicas....... i saw land more than a few times ...... but i just decided to stay........ so hello .... wave at me .. if u see out there.......... il play you a song as we pass each other by....
Having met and admired Townes for a few years, I still do some of his songs in my show. Guy Clark introduced me to Townes in the late 1960s. I will be forever grateful.... J.T.R.
didn't even know about Townes until yeas after his death. what a talent. every damn one of his songs pulls at your heart. This is one of the more upbeat ones but all of them tell us something about what was inside this troubled soul. RIP Townes van Zandt
At my window Watching the sun go Hoping the stars know It's time to shine Daydreams Aloft on dark wings Soft as the sun streams At days decline Living is laughing Dying says nothing at all Baby and I are laying here Watching the evening fall Time flows Through brave beginnings And she leaves her endings Beneath our feet Walk lightly Upon their faces Leave gentle traces Upon their sleep Living is dancing Dying does nothing at all Baby and I are laying here Watching the evening fall Three dimes Hard luck and good times Fast lines and low rhymes Ain't much to say Feel fine Feel low and lazy Feel grey and hazy Feel far away Living is sighing Dying ain't flying so high Baby and I are lying here Watching the day go by
this list is subject to change depending on my mood...except for Townes: 1 Townes- 2- Dylan-3-Emmy Lou...- 4 Ryan Adams-Tie- Natalie Merchant- 5 to be continued.......
This is a beautiful performance/recording. I often prefer Townes with just his voice and guitar, that directness and intimacy; the space. However this particular version is delicate, empathetic, ethereal, perfect.
Thanks for all the responses everyone. For those curious, this particular track is off the Be Here To Love documentary soundtrack. There's some great live versions of some of his best songs and even some cool audio clip interviews. It's real favorite of mine.
it's originally from the recordings for the unrealesed "Seven Come Eleven" (so around 1974). An album that eventually appeared on CD as "The Nashville Sessions", but that CD is hard to get these days. I have a copy :)
Art is an interesting thing, some debate it and sometimes nobody does because it goes without saying. TVZ is so wonderful that if anyone claims otherwise they come off sounding foolish.
a man who had this much talent and passion for music deserved more credit and recognition. it truly is a shame that we r losing great musicains who write their own music. PEOPLE MAY NOT LIVE FOREVER BUT LEGENDS NEVER DIE
The version of the "Be Here to Love Me" documentary comes from "The Nashville Sessions" (recorded in 1973). "The Nashville Sessions" = a VERY good album, with better versions of the songs which are on "Flyin' Shoes" (and on "At My Window"). The arrangements are acurate, sparser...
For some strange reason I'm closer in musical sense to Guy Clark than to Townes, but nevertheless...these boys are true greats. This song (and this version of song particularly!) is special to me.
"Resolutions floating freely in revolutions, swiftly passing awaiting to grasp. Fixing without fixating, able to hope to be stable is enough to lay on the table . Same situation with a similar picture then why do we feel the play needs to be recast ? Sitting in the chair catching a familiar glare, another day of staring at the old maple. Finished with reassessments, why make so many changes if they really won't last?.........R.C. Thanks. Rick western slope Co. Wichita Ks.
In my youthful ignorance I refused to listen to his music because I didn't like his singing. Now I can't listen to him enough, because of his heart and soul.
Love townes van zandt but really dislike the production on his albums. His songs dont need to be backed up by all these instruments they're good enough as they are.
How did I live 72 years and never hear this

im twenty four... been with my wife for eight years.. finally convinced her to name my son townes
first. victory. ..ever..
This is so cute.😂💛
Now that's the motherlode of victories. You don't need any more; Townes was the best. I saw him perform back in the early 1980s. Super glad that a new generation is discovering his talents.
First of many i hope and a excellent choice for a name.
Did you name your boy Townes?
Look Forward: all stuff about your kid has "victory" wrapped around it. the best to you
Laying on a beach in the west coast Scottish highlands listening to this under the stars is what im going to do
My late brother loved this pitiful old lush and now I know why
R I P Townes and Tony
He was a simple and gentle man with a lot to say. May you Rest In Peace Townes van Zandt.
favorite Townes song. yes, I listen while doing dishes, at the sink. just wash up listening to Townes. yes, the stars know it's time to shine.
My favourite too. Well, this and To Live is to Fly...
Reminds me of a line from a Townes song. "The old washer woman has finished her cleaning and gone"
"Quicksilver Daydreams Of Maria" One of the most beautiful songs ever.
@@jonstern7511 to live is to fly.....Flying? eclipsing a second into forever

Was about to reply but I saw you posted this over a year ago. Guess all I'll say is that I hope you're in a better place now.
One of The Greatest songs ever written by the one of The Top 3 to ever write.
Having met and admired Townes for a few years, I still do some of his songs in my show. Guy Clark introduced me to Townes in the late 1960s. I will be forever grateful.... J.T.R.
Michael H. I'd say Cohen 1, Dylan maybe 2, tvz conceivably three but just conceivably. Fortunately for us there's plenty of competition.
Yup. Graceland never ceases to amaze me. Let's agree to mostly agree :-)
RIP Townes, There s NO ONE LIKE YOU.
This sweet song just carries you to a peaceful sad and beautiful place. 💙
didn't even know about Townes until yeas after his death. what a talent. every damn one of his songs pulls at your heart. This is one of the more upbeat ones but all of them tell us something about what was inside this troubled soul. RIP Townes van Zandt
my new favorite TVS song, so many former favorites
I come back to this every few months or so, and have for a while now. I still forget to breathe when TVZ starts to sing this poetry.
I fell across Townes via Three Billboards four weeks ago. I soar and cry when he sings
At my window
Watching the sun go
Hoping the stars know
It's time to shine
Daydreams
Aloft on dark wings
Soft as the sun streams
At days decline
Living is laughing
Dying says nothing at all
Baby and I are laying here
Watching the evening fall
Time flows
Through brave beginnings
And she leaves her endings
Beneath our feet
Walk lightly
Upon their faces
Leave gentle traces
Upon their sleep
Living is dancing
Dying does nothing at all
Baby and I are laying here
Watching the evening fall
Three dimes
Hard luck and good times
Fast lines and low rhymes
Ain't much to say
Feel fine
Feel low and lazy
Feel grey and hazy
Feel far away
Living is sighing
Dying ain't flying so high
Baby and I are lying here
Watching the day go by
Thank for lyrics !
Many thanks for the lyrics. Beautiful.
last verse is "Babe and I wonderin'" / "Watching the day go by"
This is surely one if the greatest songs ever very emotional and happy all at once incredible
townes is the one who makes me listen to something else than dylan
pure soul music
+mario7frankielee you put word´s to my thought´s

can't put in words what this song does to me
Mellow and melodic -- can it get any better than this?
Townes being awesome all on his own brought me here.
how can you not like/enjoy townes ?
This is a beautiful performance/recording. I often prefer Townes with just his voice and guitar, that directness and intimacy; the space. However this particular version is delicate, empathetic, ethereal, perfect.
perfect lyrics.. a always by Townes
This is a great song! Townes knows the right words!
Thanks for all the responses everyone. For those curious, this particular track is off the Be Here To Love documentary soundtrack. There's some great live versions of some of his best songs and even some cool audio clip interviews. It's real favorite of mine.
just love Townes, feel blessed to have found his music
Townes van zandt. un grande poeta.
Townes van zandt poet of highest quality who will never be forgotten
This is something. His face was a story itself. May he rest in peace..
Townes is so good.
So great, so tender, so real.
one of my favorites
Stirs my soul!
May he forever rest in peace.......
"Living is dancing. Dying is doing nothing at all..."
I will NEVER hear this enough! Thanks!
I saw him in Austin, back when I was in college. Two friends and I road tripped down to Austin and we had a wonderful, if somewhat blurry week.
I think of Townes and beyond other songwriters he could bring you as low as you could and as high as God's love to man on the cross.
Beautiful
There´s tears in my eyes...
Fits my day just fine................
huge townes fan myself, and haven't heard this before. thanks for the post.
can't wait to hear townes in whatever sort of afterlife may await us.
Just great!
Best performance of this song
Man he's got me rocking this chair, and I'm gone.
ENORMOUS!!
Dreamy...drifting off in a feeling.
One of my three favorites. The other two are "You Are Not Needed Now" and "If I Needed You".
time flows--yes--it flows
a great poet, thanks
That's such a harrowing, amazing movie.
Thanks for posting this.

Is that where its from wow? He sounds younger
So beautiful so sad
😪😪
THEE DEFINITIVE Version
Art is an interesting thing, some debate it and sometimes nobody does because it goes without saying. TVZ is so wonderful that if anyone claims otherwise they come off sounding foolish.
Real art communicates. And he does in EVERY song...
my four year old loves it when it song TVZ to her a bedtime. His music speaks across many generations
I think that's wonderful. I know he loves it also.
a man who had this much talent and passion for music deserved more credit and recognition. it truly is a shame that we r losing great musicains who write their own music. PEOPLE MAY NOT LIVE FOREVER BUT LEGENDS NEVER DIE
agreed...
Thank you for posting this, lifeinvheissu.
haunting ~
Never heard this version. But there is another that starts with a beautiful violin (look it up, that too is beautiful).
fanatastic
love it
Danced with my wife to this song at our wedding.

thanks for the upload
Wow!!

Livin' in is dancing, dieings doin' nothin' at all.
You Know, as much as I love Dylan...Oh Townes...I just fell backwards in my office chair.
"Resolutions floating freely in revolutions, swiftly passing awaiting to grasp.

Dylan probably still listens to Townes.
Well Dylan's album Times they are a changing is one of his primary influences along with Robert Johnson so think about that rabbit hole
In my youthful ignorance I refused to listen to his music because I didn't like his singing. Now I can't listen to him enough, because of his heart and soul.
I was trying to convince my girlfriend that commercial music has no soul, it’s made to sell. I should’ve just turned on Townes instead.
🎼⭐️⭐️⭐️
Anyone tabbed out this version yet?
Anyone know who does the backing vocals on this track?
Or where it came from
Jared Followill sent me here :)
Where is this version from and why does he sound younger than said album?
Album Nashville Sessions
:D yes
Just good music people, no need to slam Bob, his is deep too......
Jared Followill :)
Don't know why they have Woody Guthrie as writer on this. Wrong ! Writer is Townes Van Zandt !
Do you know what version this is where it came from
Lucky dog👇
super! makes me think it's Bob Dylan on heroin, except he can kinda sing.
Love townes van zandt but really dislike the production on his albums. His songs dont need to be backed up by all these instruments they're good enough as they are.
Bad rhymes and fine lines
And he is not famous!!!
bs
what, a writer? amazing. yea, not a fan of the production much either- too treble, overdone.
Love coming across new people, recently found Townes through a friend..
This is music.. :)
cheers bennie!
