Treating timber with chemical preservatives protects it from damage by insects and decay, but some may harm people or the environment if treated timber is not handled with care and disposed of properly.
Copper chrome arsenate (CCA) contains arsenic, which can cause cancer. It is not to be used for new high-contact surfaces such as garden furniture, picnic tables, exterior seating, play equipment, handrails, patio and domestic decking, and if burnt, CCA smoke and ash are particularly hazardous..
So, it’s important to choose the right product for the job and, if possible choose an arsenic free alternative.
