  • @sojourner829

    I get perfect moon shots as follows: 200 ISO, Aperture priority, F5.6 or 6.1, single point focus focused directly on the moon, EV 3 or 4 stops under. This is the key, the underexposure. The bright light of the moon gives you plenty fast of a shutter speed to hand hold, tripod even better. In post production do minimal adjustments. A little on exposure or highlights. That's it. Perfect every time.

    • @ThePhotoShow
      @ThePhotoShow  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Excellent, with a aperture of F:5.6/F:6.1 and the EV 3 or 4 stops down you are at the same exposure as using F:11 with no EV changes. You basically end up with the same settings used in the video. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.

    • @ThePhotoShow
      @ThePhotoShow  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes, that would work well. It is one stop difference from the videos suggestions. I tend to go for a slightly darker image to bring out a bit more detail when editing. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.

    • @ir8free

      good for any lunar phase?
      for handheld cam at max zoom, i keep shutter speed faster than 1/320 s, usually 1/400 or 1/500 s, to prevent blur from cam shake.
      i use max aperture and iso 400 or less, depending on the phase.

    • @lonniepaulson7031
      @lonniepaulson7031 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would agree with you. Your exposure would be the sunny 16 rule. 1/125sec @ f/11 would have the same exposure value (EV number) as 1/250 @ f/16 with an ISO of 200. In the past with film cameras I have used the sunny 16 rule for photographing the Moon and I came out fine. The same incident light coming from the sun to the Moon is about the same incident light that is coming from the sun to the Earth. The Earth is 93 million miles from the sun and our Moon is only about a 1/4 of a million miles from the Earth.

    Tip #3 needs a caveat. With really long focal lengths, upwards of 400-500mm, the rotation of the Earth can and will move the Moon out of your viewfinder within a minute or two.
    Tip #3 needs another caveat. When you are using a tripod, if your camera allows for mirror lockup, then use it. Your images will be much sharper, especially if you are using a very long focal length lens.
    When it comes to camera settings, it is best to set White Balance to daylight. After all, the Moon is reflecting pure sunlight.
    Also, use the same Looney 11 exposure rule irregardless of what phase the Moon is in. The only difference between a full Moon and a quarter Moon is how much is visible. There is no difference in brightness.
    Finally, the Apollo astronauts described the color of the Moon as being the color of street asphalt, which has been covered with grey ashes similar to what might come out of BBQ grill.

    Great tips. This Wednesday, 1/31/2018 is a rare lunar event that hasn’t happened since 1866: a super moon; blue moon; and a blood moon (red eclipse) all at the same time. I was looking for some tips to make sure I could capture it. Thanks!

    great tips! my dslr is prime on an 8" SC Telescope. Its f10, but i will def try and check the lunar rule out

    • @ThePhotoShow
      @ThePhotoShow  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Excellent, the settings should still give great results, f10 may give a slightly brighter image but you could always adjust the shutter speed or ISO to compensate. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.

    Always use spot metering
    It's the most accurate way of exposing
    And use ISO to control brightness.

    • @ThePhotoShow
      @ThePhotoShow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Karl, yes spot metering does work, with the Moon being fairly consistent in brightness the Luna 11 rule is just a quick and easy way to get great photos. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave.

    Thanks for a very short and right to the point video Dave. On this chilly bone freezing cold night, I used a Nikon kit lense at f/11 (as per your video) 300mm focal length and ISO200 but doubled the shutter speed to 1/400 and shot raw. The image came out great. On a side note, what's your recommendation for a prime lense for portrait photography? I am torn between 50mm f/1.8 and f/1.4 or do you have recommendation for something better? Cheers from Canada :)

    • @ThePhotoShow
      @ThePhotoShow  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Rohit, I am glad the video was useful and your Moon photos worked out. Either of the 50mm lenses are great I would also have a look at the Sigma and Tamron options such as the Sigma 50mm f1.4 DG HSM Art - Nikon Fit. Great quality lenses are cheaper than the Nikon ones. Thank you for watching, have fun, Dave

    I used an Olympus e-pl5, and a 50-175mm OM zuiko that I added with an adapter, and played with settings until I got it! My ISO won't go below 200, shutter speed I couldn't find, but I placed the timer on 2 secs. And my focus was all the way CCW. I dunno, but somehow I got it! Just had to blow it up on the computer.

    Whoo Hoo! already helping more since you have just stated that 200 Minimum! You didn't say that , at least that i recall on the last video I watched . so i am going to look for the longest I can afford, used or at an estate sale or whatever. :0) and I will be getting a better tri pod , not happy with the crap one I have now. LOL
    Thanks again.
    this cam i have here now is a 100% brand new but from what i understand is a beginner dsl. still is the best i have ever had. it's the t5 cannon.

      Hi Larry, glad this helped more. It is worth looking at Tamron and Sigma lenses, they make some zooms that go up to 500/600mm at a much lower price than Canon or Nikon. Even better if you can find used versions. Have fun, Dave.
