The very evening I watched this photo, I took pictures of the moon using your instructions. My wife and I were simply amazed! Absolutely brilliant! Perfect exposures. I am 72 years old and was so happy with what I had learned! Thank you, thank you!!
That smile that I had on my face after shooting the moon clear for the first time in my life after wanting it to do since childhood! Priceless. Thank you man! Loved your tutorial. It worked perfect.
I first managed to get the exposure right on an entirely manual, inexpensive 35mm camera with no autofocus, no rangefinder and no exposure meter when I was about 15. I stared at that print for ages through a magnifying glass and was amazed. There was detail. Blurred but not a white blob and I could make out the seas. Magic!
I would do L JPEG and RAW, that way you can have the best of both worlds. A JPEG, ready to download and share, and the RAW footage to edit in Lightroom or some other program. It takes up more room, but memory is pretty cheap these days. @@Melo_Invest25
It will be fun, and challenging at times, but that's part of the fun of learning photography. And even many pro photographers will tell you you will always be learning something new (as Rick Sammon says, "You're a student for life.")
I agree. I am an astrophotographer and I like the way he teaches people. Simple and to the point. Easy to follow and clearly explained. I totally agree with his methods.
I have a learning disability that makes it harder to understand. So i just wanted to say thank you sir. You explain it very simple and take your time explaining and showing what to push. This video helped me so much since this is going to be my future career. I look forward to watching other videos you got for photography.
I'm a proficient photographer and this is the best video on moon photography i've seen. Paul covers all the bases with useful information, that's easy to understand. If you don't get good moon shots, then you are not doing what this tutorial is teaching. You need to cover all the points to get a great shot, and you will. Thanks for the info!!!!
I've been a photographer since I was a kid, I'm now 62 and the digital world has left me behind, but your video was very enlightning! Thanks for the simple way of explaining the cameras.
Hi Paul, just wanted to say a huge thank you. Some time ago I started watching your videos, I was in auto mode with the entry level D5600. After watching your tutorials (which perfectly explain how to move to manual mode) I moved to full manual and have never gone back to auto. I've even upgraded to the D500 and have achieved many stunning pictures. I don't think I would have been brave enough to move over without your beautifully and clearly explained videos. It's been over a year now and my love of photography has turned into a bit of an obsession :-)
One of the best channels on TH-cam for learners like me.. you make everything so simple and easy to understand. No product placement or unwanted nonsense. Thank you so much..
Having used SLR (yes back in the FILM days), DSLR, and now mirrorless I don't consider myself a PRO but more like an experienced enthusiast. Now although having that experience I didn't learn anything from this video, BUT.... ... this is perhaps the BEST video I've seen explaining how to get a great photo of the moon, for a beginner or beginner who thinks they are not a beginner. Great job with this video, Paul.
You are so welcome, glad you got some good shots. I've made another video about shooting the stars in the nigh sky, you may want to check that out next : th-cam.com/video/f73onFoDvVU/w-d-xo.html 😀
I just wanted to say thank you. I purchased my Nikon d5200 from a pawn shop and no manual. It came with a 55-300 zoom and i purchased a 500-1000 mm You answered all my questions on how to set up the manual shot in just this one video, can't wait to watch your other videos thank you so much sharing your knowledge and expertise. Your detailed and hands on demonstrations for me, were perfect!!. I understood how to operate it in seconds😊😊🙏 🙏 Sincerely Chris.
Very well done. Ive been needing to train in DSLR photography for about 8 years. This has just the right amount of talk and instruction. Very pleased and looking forward to shoot tonight’s moon. Thanks.
I had a difficult time initially because I didn't have this exact Nikon. Once I figured out how to see my settings, in this + 20 year old camera, I was able to easily follow along and understand. Now I'm off to take a picture of our super blue moon. Thank you!!!
You have covered the topic very well. One note I would add is, observe the moon through the camera and lens for a short while - minutes - and you will notice a shimmer over the surface of the moon from time to time. It is actually our atmosphere which becomes unstable for a short time. After a while, you can pick the quiet times (no shimmer), so target the photo in that time. This will give the shooter the best results, especially at higher magnifications. Another aside, shoot the moon higher in the sky - less atmosphere to shoot through. Clear skies.
From India. Sir, I have learned actual moon photography from your video. Today I clicked some photos of moon, and its marvelous. Thank you a lot. Keep posting such tips and tricks of photography.
Other tips: Use a polarizing or moon filter to cut glare. If your camera has a mirror, lock the mirror up to minimize camera shake. Quarter moon or crescent moon pictures can be better than full moon pictures since the sun is shining at it from the side causing shadows from the crater ridges giving more detail to your photos.
Paul, I'm a DSLR neophyte. I found your instruction to be extremely easy to follow & took the sensory overload away for me. I'm heading to Yellowstone & Grand Teton this weekend. I'm now excited about getting great moon photos! Thanks!!
Hey Paul! I'm glad I found your videos. I actually bought my very first DSLR camera, which is a Canon T7/1500D starter bundle kit. It came with 18mm-55mm lens and 75-300mm lens. A few weeks after I purchased the camera bundle, I purchased my very first prime lens(Canon 50mm STM lens). Through watching various of your videos(especially the ones that features the Canon T7), I've learned a lot. I'm dying to take a moon photo after watching this video, because I actually have the camera and lens you used to take your moon photo. Your photo came out so crisp and clean. I would greatly appreciate it if you could continue to do more videos on tips, tricks, photography, lenses, etc on the Canon T7/1500D🙏💯 I would love to grow my photography skills with the Canon T7 and the 3 lens i have right now. And so far you've helped me along the way, including a lot of photographer friends i know as well.
I have been taking moon photos with a small Canon point and shoot that has a manual setting. They turn out great, but I have a Canon DSLR that I would prefer to use. Knowing about digital zoom has opened up a great big night sky for me, so thank you!
I have been struggling with these issues, and getting the balance right for ages, and in just a few minutes of watching your video everything has suddenly clicked into place (if you'll pardon the pun) I didn't realise just how little I knew about my camera till now. Thanks so much for taking the time to explain this. For the first time I actually feel in control, instead of the camera controlling me....and it's a good feeling!!

Thank you so much Jose, I really do appreciate the kind words and feedback and I'm happy you find the videos informative. The T7 is a great camera so I hope you are getting some great photos. Stay safe and best wishes to you from Brisbane. Paul @ Photo Genius.
Hey Paul wanted to thank you. This VDO really helped. I used a 55-250mm lens and was able to take a shot which came out good. Need to take more and practice but can't thank you enough for the simple explanations that you do that makes it so easy to understand. Keep up the good work and I look forward to your videos every time.
I’ve been taking moon shots for years. I wish I had seen this years ago. It would have saved me a lot of bad shots. I’ve had some success with with my Canon SX420 point and shoot with digital zoom but my best shots were taken with my T7 this February.
What i really like on your videos is the way how you explain and show it on Canon and Nikon cameras without making a difference between those two brands.I saw this on many of your videos.
This suddenly got recommended by youtube today when I'm waiting for the Strawberry Moon to happen so I can take a picture of it, and I needed this guide, so thank you!

I watched this for the first time 6 months ago, problem was that I was such a newbie, I still didn’t get it. But I re-watched, and now I GET IT!!!! And took a beautiful half moon shot while in Pennsylvania. THANK YOU PAUL.... I’m hanging in there and love your videos !!!!!
Very well done. Would recommend you include a few images if the Moon to show what can be done just to whet people’s appetite to go out and shoot the Moon.
Lovely video, can't wait to try it out, please make one for taking the stars. Would like to know more about night photography as well, thanks a lot for this.
THANK YOU for a relatable, straightforward but comprehensive tutorial. I appreciate that you actually showed the camera and explained each step in detail. You seem patient and friendly - essential teacher qualities, haha! I look forward to trying this tonight for the now waning full moon. I have subscribed and will be watching more of your videos.
My first camera was a Minolta Hi-Matic semi automatic SLR camera, which I bought in Hong Kong in 1970. I had so much fun with it starting onAutomatic setting , then graduating to taking manual photos and slides. I still have it but don’t even know if I can get film for it now. I have a couple of compact cameras and a Fugi Finepix bridge camera. Your explanations brought so many memories back. My best ever photo was of the Houses of Parliament at night, I didn’t have a tripod, I just rested it on the embankment wall and held my breath while counting to ten holding down the shutter. It was a lucky shot!
Can I just say that I bought a Canon 2000 in April and struggled with it and thought I’d wasted my money. Now I’ve found your channel I am getting just the tutoring I needed to find enjoyment from it. Not all heroes wear capes
Thank you, Paul! I have wanted to have a camera like this for 40 years and now I'm taking the time to learn. After coming across your videos they are my go-to. I love how you explain, show each step with the camera, and that you use the Canon T7 . It is so helpful! 😊
I have always wanted to take a good picture of the moon. Just recently got a good deal on a Nikon D5600 18-55/70-300. Just watched this video and by chance it is a full moon tonight.....WOW!!! It worked! Thank you! You done an amazing job of explaining to where a newbie like me could understand! New subscriber!
Perfectly timed for the super moon but, here in my part of the UK it is too cloudy at 9pm. I've checked the weather forecast and set the alarm for 3am. Hopefully I can be out in the garden before my wife realises exactly what time she has been woken up at.
Hi Tony, ironically after rushing to get the video out it started to rain in Brisbane and could not see that moon for low clouds. Hoping tonight will be better. Hope you managed to sneak out and get some shots without waking your wife 😀
Oh my gosh! You just helped me understand my camera and take my first real photo of the moon. No other video in 5 years has helped. I can for the first time see details of the moon! I’m over the moon with excitement.
You're very welcome Bronte, I'm glad you got a great image. if you are sharing the pic to social media please use the hashtag #photogeniusbrisbane so we can check it out. Thanks for watching and supporting my channel. Paul @ Photo Genius.
I used your tips last night for a beautiful picture of last night's full moon, my pictures came out beautiful and clear, bright and simply wonderful. Thank you!
Nikon Z50 50-250m lens but I had to have a higher ISO but the rest was perfect!!! Thank you for the help!! Newbie and that's one of my favorite pictures!! Can't wait to get to the mountains!!!🤗
I think it's important is locking up the mirror, my shots of the moon are using a 5DMk4 150-600 tamron and 2x converter, --- lock up the mirror and a trigger remote cable or radio I also put sand bags on my tripod
I ended up here after getting an error message on my Canon lens. Now I'm just waiting on a clear sky to have a go at doing some astronomy shots!!!!!! Excellent tutor. Liked & subscribed.
Usually the problem is how to focus when you don't have full moon and air pollution especially near to the city / urban areas. best is to take in in desert when you have clear sky and full moon.
Hugely helpful stuff here, and I'm glad I found it. I'm about to go outside right now and give this a try with my R6 Mk II and 100-500, and R5 with 200-800! Thanks for posting! EDIT: Took some shots tonight with the above cameras. I used your suggested settings, and save them as C3-Fv on both cameras. The results were excellent. Thanks again!
Thank you, Sir, for this very thorough and very well-explained “How To” video! You are an excellent teacher, in my humble opinion. I look forward to putting your directions into action and hope for a clear night this coming Tuesday, December 29th, 2020 so I can photograph the last Full Moon of 2020! Thanks, again and best wishes!
If you can get close enough that the spot meter fits withing the moon then moving settings until the meter is in the middle in manual mode or no exp comp in a semi auto mode will give an 18% grey exposure of the moon. Any metering mode will do the job but the place on tge meter or exposure comp will be different for each.
A full Moon is basically pretty much the same brilliance. You're in the ballpark with the settings suggested. You just bracket a few shots either side and you'll get a good picture. There's no need to meter at all. The only thing I'd add to this tutorial is to set the white balance to daylight rather than auto.
WHY would any one give the thumb down to this video??? this video is so comprehensive easy to understand by a very likeable person
Thank you kindly Herman ($20 in the post) 😀
Appreciate the feedback and support for my channel.

Because people are just nasty

Just finished and it was great.
Thank you, Paul! I have wanted to have a camera like this for 40 years and now I'm taking the time to learn. After coming across your videos they are my go-to. I love how you explain, show each step with the camera, and that you use the Canon T7 . It is so helpful! 😊
thank you for the thorough explanation - now if I could afford the right lens for night sky :)
Very welcome! Happy New Year to you.

Got my Wife a Canon 6D for Mothers day. I can't wait - umm for her - to get it out on a clear night and start shooting the moon!
Yep, and if she can't, I bet you're just itching to have a go!
Yeah, why does Homer Simpson buying Marge a bowling ball for her as a gift come to mind.
I used your tips last night for a beautiful picture of last night's full moon, my pictures came out beautiful and clear, bright and simply wonderful. Thank you!
Wonderful! So good to hear - thanks for the feedback and Happy New Year to you.
This is good content. I have so many pictures of the moon. Great teaching
Thank you 👍 🙂
Nikon Z50 50-250m lens but I had to have a higher ISO but the rest was perfect!!! Thank you for the help!! Newbie and that's one of my favorite pictures!! Can't wait to get to the mountains!!!🤗
I’m in uk and the weather was on my side no clouds and my house is in the perfect position for taking photos of the moon
For the pink moon
Took me from getting bright circle to getting pic of moon. I did have to fine tune (as explained in video) to my camera/lens. THANKS, great video.
Excellent, so glad you got a good result. Thanks for watching and sharing your feedback.
Whos here training for the eclipse
Lmfaoooo Fr 😭😭
✋
Perfect balance of pace and repetition so that the message really sinks in. Thank you :)
Usually the problem is how to focus when you don't have full moon and air pollution especially near to the city / urban areas. best is to take in in desert when you have clear sky and full moon.
no air pollution these days due to lockdown!
I'm a complete beginner but feel much happier now i have watched this video, great tutorial thank you
Once I put my cellphone camera up to my telescope eye lens and was able to get an amazingly clear shot of the moon.
I've done the same - amazing!
Thanks for watching Joseph.
I did but i wasnt using a starsense autoalign and it was hard (;´༎ຶٹ༎ຶ`)
This was dope tutorial. Straight to the point. My pictures of the moon came out amazing!!! Bless you, sir.
I like to use spot metering when photographing the moon. What metering mode do you recommend? Thank you
Alexa Claven: I use spot metering and I also under-expose by two or three stops (for a full moon).
I follwed your instructions on my Nikon D5600 with AF-S 70-300mm lens and got amazing results
That is great, Im so glad. Thank you for watching and supporting my channel.
Thanks for the info..my T7i is all preset and on its tripod..now just to wait for it to get dark here in SW Florida. Fingers crossed for a clear sky🤞🏻
Hop you get some great results Jonathan, after a beautiful sunny day it got really cloudy in the PM so no photos for me - try again tonight.
Stop crying.. in Fla. you only have to wait a few minutes for the sky to Clear up...
*Here in Oregon I have to wait Months ! (:})*
I just want to say thank you so much. I have 0 knowledge and went from taking pictures that looked like a white ball to actual detailed pictures
Will this 75 - 300mm lens take good photos?
Absolutely.
Took up photography about a week ago, found this great channel, watching lots of tutorials, and managed to get a nice detailed shot of the moon:)
When I got my first dslr I went straight into manual and never go into auto
Thank you for using clear & concise instructions. Just got the best moon shot since purchasing my DSLR.
Usually I get arrested when I'm too exposed.
XD I love that
😭😭😭
