I'm always glad to see that I'm not the only one who has problems getting stick welds started. I don't weld often and do get the swing of it over the course of an afternoon but the first few dozen attempts can be very frustrating.
Yep, it can be a bit tricky when you don't do it on a regular basis. I learned to stick weld about 40 years ago, my father owned a welding shop. Now I MIG weld 90% of the time and don't get the chance to stick weld as often as I'd like. I do try and do it as much as I can though, I enjoy the process of stick welding.
@@BruceLyeg Bringing up MIG, I noticed you tacked this together with what looked to be the cheap HF flux-core welder. Along with the HF flux-core and the big stick welder, you have a 175 MIG, why did you choose to tack with the HF and then stick weld the rest instead of doing it all with the 175 MIG?
One trick I noticed when stick welding is to make sure you have a really good ground. Still sticks but I find the cleaner the ground connection the less likely it is to stick. The difference between a ground clamp over scale vs freshly grinded is pretty noticeable. You'd think the table has lots of points of contact however steel has a fairly high resistance which doesn't help.
I copied your deal and saved $210 from lucids, however I left the whole 1'9 (3" for t adapter piece). However the harbor freight "base" is a little small for my dually wheels, the peg makes the wheels off center on the machine but the chamber still worked flawlessly for 8 tires (7 and a goof) but the little cross piece didnt fare to well, had to find a way to heat it back into shape since I had to cram the hold down so tight with each rim.... only took ~4hours in my driveway to do all 8, speed up pretty good towards the end and learned the duck. Just need to get myself the cone and a clamp.
Awesome. You should do a video showing it. It definitely takes a little while to get the technique down. The first few wheels I did took about 1/2 an hour each, now I got it down to about ten minutes each or less. The clamp helps but isn't completely needed. The cone is a big time saver though.
This is a game changer!! Looks a lot like the expensive tire changing machines. Maybe I missed where you got the plastic head piece which protects the wheel and wedges between the bead during installation and removal.

I assume you're talking about the red plastic piece? It's called a "duck". I bought it on ebay for $14 CAD. They range in price from $5-$60, as long as they're made of nylon and have the correct mounting points for what you plan, they're all pretty much the same. Amazon sells them too.

Thank you for the dimensions and giving me the inspiration to make my own duckbill arm for my HF tire changer. I assembled mine using a Tractor Supply Jobsmart wire welder. You also showed me that I don't need the needle bearings that the Lucid design uses. It made fairly quick work of mounting 4 and dismounting 2 tires this weekend. I spent more on the steel tubing stock from Ebay than I did for the HF tire changer, since I don't have a local steel shop.
I'm in the middle of making my tire changer. I'm making it hitch mounted but I've been pondering on how the top will be designed. I plan on having a arm like yours but I want to make it powered with a shaft through the center by a wheelchair motor.
I'd really love to see a video or videos of it when you get started! It's a bit of a PITA to mount it to the floor whenever I use it, but I didn't really have any other options at the time. Not that I have a pick up truck, the idea of hitch mounting it is very appealing to me. I might build something along that line. I also considered using some sort of motor to make it power operate but by the time I had a rough idea of what I was gonna do, I figured I could buy an old Coates air operated machine for what it would cost me to build and automatic one. Would the duckbill not be better in alignment with the centre of the machine of the horizontal tube was welded to the back of the upright, this way once the down tube fr the duckbill is welded back to the other side it will end up aligned with the centre of the circle that you will be creating as you rotate it, otherwise it will be too far forwards, ok, so i just drew it out on a piece of paper and it does not effect the concentricity it just makes the diameter larger but not being centre with the pivot point that is the centre upright.
Great video. I am following your plans for my changer. Do you like the flux wire that you have. I haven't figured out my problems with it. Machine or wire? I'm thinking about going back to mig wire and 75/25 gas.
I've used it a few times now and am very pleased with it. It definitely makes using the manual tire changer much easier. It takes a couple times to get a technique down but once you do, it's great. I've had a few people ask me to build them one after seeing mine, but it's not really worth it unless I was to buy the steel in large quantities. Good luck with yours, post a video when you're done. @@mystakilla I got all the steel at Metal Supermarkets. The nesting square tubing is Hitch receiver tubing for a 2" hitch. Any steel supply place should have it. The flat part connecting the duckbill to the tube was just some 1/4" plate that I cut, ground and drilled to fit the duck. It's welded to the round vertical tube. Hope that helps

I bought a HF changer almost a year ago and just set it up. Getting the tires off is a piece of cake. Putting them on and the bar they provide does not work too well going back on. I think i'm gonna get another bar.
I agree, it works great as is to get the tire off but getting it back on is no fun. The piece that touches the tire is called a duck. It's a hard nylon piece I bought on ebay for $13. I've seen some tire bars for sale that have nylon end that look like they'd make installing the tire a lot easier.

I didn't make a materials list because not all the tire changers are the same. The square tubing is just hitch receiver square stock. The rest of it is just whatever fits your application.
Nice work Bruce ! I'm planning this mod as well ..... My guess why the other fellas lever it the way they do is so they can be on the opposite side of the tire from the duck's head, giving them the ability to help push the bead down into the drop center on the rim.

Hey Kevin. It would depend on where you live. I'm in Canada and the cost of materials was around $80, plus $50 for the centering cone and around two hours cutting, welding and assembly. You could likely get the materials a lot less expensive if you're in the US and cut build it yourself or have someone do it for you. Was this the diy kit from lucid auto, or did you just get all the raw material and use the design? Is that duckbill metal or nylon? I found some nylon ones on eBay. Seems like it would be good for not damaging the rims

You just need to slow down a little with the 7018 your drag is too fast...then it will be a decent weld. Very nice mod to the harby freight tire changer! Thx for sharing!!!
Thanks for sharing. I had an old Forney myself, traded for a smaller Century stick welder. WHERE did you get the red shoe guide that rides the bead that does Not come w/ the HF??
The Forney is a big beast but I love it. As already mentioned, the duck head can be purchased on eBay or Amazon, even on Wish if you wanna save some money but wait forever for it to arrive lol. It does work on low profile tires, it's just a little more difficult, good bead lube helps a lot.
Bruce, if I may offer some belated constructive criticism... I have been doing pretty much the same mod as you do here but for motorcycle tires. All the same principles apply though. I think that you made your vertical pieces too tall. You end up applying too much bending force where that effort could go more directly into to duck head. That extra high doesn't appear to serve any purpose. Otherwise, great video and your design confirms what I am doing is the right route.
Hey David, I appreciate the advice and agree with you. It's something I've already considered and would probably do different if I were to make another one. There is a slight flex in the outer arm. The way i deal with it now is to use the pry bar lower and closer to the duck. Not an ideal solution though. Thanks for the thoughtful comment. Have a great day.
I can usually lay down some pretty beads when I take the time. My father owned a welding shop and started teaching me when I was about 7, I'm now pushing 50 so I've got a lot of practice in. I will honestly admit that I'm not the best welder in the world though. I have a 25 year old neighbor that only started welding a couple of years ago and can weld me under the table. He's got a certain skill and talent that you can't learn, he was born to weld.
@@BruceLyeg I just started a few years ago myself and learned from hands on and ChuckE2009 videos. I still don't call myself a welder but I've layed some pretty good 7018 beads building a 50t shop press.
@@allenmckinney9533 ChuckE has done some pretty good videos, especially for people that are trying to learn or just get better. Check out the Welding Web forums if you wanna learn a lot. Just gotta have a pretty thick skin to post there. They'll help you and teach you all you ever wanted to know about welding and welding machines, but they might not be to friendly while doing it. For the most part, if you go there asking honest questions and listen to what they're telling you, you'll go a long way there. They appreciate honesty and humbleness. Some of the best welders in North America in that group
@@BruceLyeg sounds good. I do decently but I still suck when I try welding vertically. This shop press I'm making is made from 5x8" I-beam and I've been moving it around so I can make every weld downward for best results because with a 50t bottle jack I don't want it to pop apart on me or anyone else.
@@allenmckinney9533 That's one of the reasons I've never built my own press yet, that and I just don't have the room anymore. You definitely do not want a weld breaking on a press, that's why most of the ones sold are bolted together. That 5/8 I beam press will be a beast!

What on earth is wrong with this picture.. man alive. USE THE MIG. Stick ain’t needed for that. Use your 7018, 6013 on stuff over 1/4”. MiG wire is way stronger than the metal you are trying to weld with stick

@@dksix1905 I tend yo use the cheap flux core all the time when just tacking things together. Saves the gas and is quicker

Ya, it doesn't really matter. The shaft it's mounted on can rotate.

Thanks. Flux is ok but if you have gas, use it. If you must use flux, use good flux, Lincoln or Hobart

Nope, never has. It can only thread into the nut so far before it bottoms out

I really like it. When you get a chance to test it out, and your happy with it, I'm gonna hit you up as to where you bought the plastic rim tool part and description for your search. As far as how the welding looks, I say, who cares as long as it gets the job done and stays together. After all were going for functionality, not a beauty contest. Right?
Thanks! Exactly, I could have made some pretty welds with the MIG or even got stupid and TIG'd it. Stick welding has worked for decades and I enjoy stick welding. I'll put links to where I got the rim tool when I do a video of me trying it out.

At 7:33 , you can't get the weld started because of the piss-poor ground on the work piece !

And only 90 amps on 1/8” 7014 rod that you should be up to around 135-160. Way to fast of drag for 1/4” material though. Excellent modification though

Hey Trenton Dennis, I don't have an extra or sell them at all. By the time I factored in materials, time and shipping it wouldn't be worth it for anyone to buy one.

Was this the diy kit from lucid auto, or did you just get all the raw material and use the design? Is that duckbill metal or nylon? I found some nylon ones on eBay. Seems like it would be good for not damaging the rims
Hey Bob. I didn't directly use anyone's design, but it was inspired by a few that that I'd seen on YT (including the awesome one by Lucid). I bought the materials at Metal Supermarkets for around $50 and the duckbill on eBay for $15, it's the nylon one. I made a video describing how I built it a little better.

Why start with mig welding and finish with rod welding???
The MIG I was using was 120v and the stick gives better penetration.

You just need to slow down a little with the 7018 your drag is too fast...then it will be a decent weld. Very nice mod to the harby freight tire changer! Thx for sharing!!!

The Forney is a big beast but I love it. As already mentioned, the duck head can be purchased on eBay or Amazon, even on Wish if you wanna save some money but wait forever for it to arrive lol.
It does work on low profile tires, it's just a little more difficult, good bead lube helps a lot.

Bruce, if I may offer some belated constructive criticism... I have been doing pretty much the same mod as you do here but for motorcycle tires. All the same principles apply though. I think that you made your vertical pieces too tall. You end up applying too much bending force where that effort could go more directly into to duck head. That extra high doesn't appear to serve any purpose. Otherwise, great video and your design confirms what I am doing is the right route.
Hey David, I appreciate the advice and agree with you. It's something I've already considered and would probably do different if I were to make another one. There is a slight flex in the outer arm. The way i deal with it now is to use the pry bar lower and closer to the duck. Not an ideal solution though. Thanks for the thoughtful comment. Have a great day.

I can usually lay down some pretty beads when I take the time. My father owned a welding shop and started teaching me when I was about 7, I'm now pushing 50 so I've got a lot of practice in. I will honestly admit that I'm not the best welder in the world though. I have a 25 year old neighbor that only started welding a couple of years ago and can weld me under the table. He's got a certain skill and talent that you can't learn, he was born to weld.
@@BruceLyeg I just started a few years ago myself and learned from hands on and ChuckE2009 videos. I still don't call myself a welder but I've layed some pretty good 7018 beads building a 50t shop press.
@@allenmckinney9533 ChuckE has done some pretty good videos, especially for people that are trying to learn or just get better. Check out the Welding Web forums if you wanna learn a lot. Just gotta have a pretty thick skin to post there. They'll help you and teach you all you ever wanted to know about welding and welding machines, but they might not be to friendly while doing it. For the most part, if you go there asking honest questions and listen to what they're telling you, you'll go a long way there. They appreciate honesty and humbleness. Some of the best welders in North America in that group
@@BruceLyeg sounds good. I do decently but I still suck when I try welding vertically. This shop press I'm making is made from 5x8" I-beam and I've been moving it around so I can make every weld downward for best results because with a 50t bottle jack I don't want it to pop apart on me or anyone else.
@@allenmckinney9533 That's one of the reasons I've never built my own press yet, that and I just don't have the room anymore. You definitely do not want a weld breaking on a press, that's why most of the ones sold are bolted together. That 5/8 I beam press will be a beast!

What on earth is wrong with this picture.. man alive. USE THE MIG. Stick ain’t needed for that. Use your 7018, 6013 on stuff over 1/4”. MiG wire is way stronger than the metal you are trying to weld with stick
