You are correct "take little bites, don't get greedy" I could only do two of four 16" tires on my own today using all of my hypermetabolism 100 lbs, Dawn dish soap and a short tire iron, no manual tire changer, nearly put my back out so I'll have to complete them tomorrow. Even near the end when the tire looks like its stretched beyond its limit halfway on the last fight don't be discouraged cuz Dawn will be there to slip everything into place and you will be amazed. All the tire shops within 100 kms here are booked up till the middle of next week and winter is pretty much here.

Unless there is a red dot also, then the red dot supercedes the yellow dot.
I have one tip, there is a valley in the wheel for the bead to drop into to allow the other side of bead to go further out for less stress on the bead while trying to pry it onto wheel.
Since your hands are full doing it manually, you can use a short piece of 2x4 to hold that bead down in the valley opposite of where you are prying.

I've done thousands like that. My dad used to own a junkyard and thats where i got my first job.
All tyres needed to be separated from the rims and there were many.
We used a manual setup something like yours. When you get the hang of it its actually a fast method

Hey disgruntled, just a handy suggestion. Get a HF bar magnet(1"x18") usually a free item, place it on top of the bead breaking steel tube, push magnet torwards column touching column, now lift tube, where magnet metal frame contacts underside of round hub, mark and cut bar magnet. Tack weld magnet to column and underside of round hub. Now when you're breaking the bead and turning the tire the magnet will hold tube and shoe out of your way. Good luck 😊
HF has done away with the freebies, at least I haven't seen any in recent history-
Have to admit, that drew me in to the store, but I tend to only go there on rare occasions now, if I need something specific that I can't find elsewhere.
Yep, the club end of the bar is use to the less. I found an old timey bar at a flea market. Now, that baby will do the job. Also, get some real bead lube, you can thank me later. Comes in a gallon tub, thicker than axle grease, can be diluted with water. Never use hand cleaner, it makes your patches turn loose. The best thing that ever happened is i broke that floppy deal that sticks in the lug bolt hole. Now, i can drop it down from the top, much easier. I have done some rough tires here at the junkpile. I have a hi lifr jack with a foot welded on it, put it under my service truck bumper, and use that to break tough beads. Truck is full of tools, air compressor and welder, so its heavy. Sometimes things will sit in a bind for an hour before that bead pops loose. Truck goes boom, hits the ground, cloud of dust. On filling tires, take the Schrader valve out and use a rubber tipped pistol blower. Starting fluid spray works very good too, but i only use it when i have trouble. Driving down a country road the other day. Saw a bunch of thrown out tires, two commodes, and some busted furniture piled up. I got them tires. Went back for the commodes, but they were gone. Still running them tires. Yep, im one of "them" kinda guys. I found 35 decent tires at one cubbyhole junk pile. We have a farm. Lots of tractors, pull type plows with their own wheels, trailers, hundreds of tires on equipment as i type. All between dad, brother, and me. Few tandem dual gooseneck trailers, cattle trailers, bumper pull trailers, dump trucks, spreader trucks, it adds up kinda rather quick like. Plus, we have a whole separate logging outfit. I was coming home yesterday and met dad headed to the sawmill with a load of logs. We use an F800 truck with a gooseneck trailer outfitted with G 14 ply tires. Built the entire trailer ourselves. Built another one we can put bunks on, they are removable. But the first one i mentioned is for logs or pipe, it has no floor, just frame with bunks.
That little bit of air in the tire tip appears to be golden! I’m with you the other end of the bar is worthless. I have purchased a couple of tire irons from Harbor Freight that work well for putting the tire back on. Thanks for the movie!

I mout the tire with the same side. I also have some smaller like 18" tire spoons for mounting like lawnmower and ATV tires before I had this and I use sometimes just those spoons or one of those spoons and the big bar to put it on.

I've had that machine for years I see your issue. Some rims are a pain for sure but you push the tire down onto the skinny part of the rim while putting it on and it holds that tool and tire together. Push the tire down on the skinny part of the rim while taking it off as well and she won't bind up like that. Hope that makes since 👍happy holidays brother

Ive been using mine for 23yrs and saved $thousands of dollars. You can also cut a tire tread about 6 inch circle or square put a hole in middle to be able to drop it on the middle of the machine. And drop a piece on the angle stopper when your breaking tire down.
I've never been able to mount a tire without that tool rolling out, I use 2 spoons. Mine has pretty much been completely welded, reinforced with gussets, parts remade with heavier steel. I'll have to try your trick to break the bead. Nothing like red paint on your nice wheels ;)
I got my tyre changer roughly the same time as you. I remember watching your vid of the time. I fit tyres exactly the same way as that knuckle end is useless. Remember when fitting the tyre to keep the opposite side in the deep part of the wheel well to ease fitting. Good tip with the grips. I always use those from the get go to save chasing it around the rim.
I will try your tip of leaving the tyre partially inflated when breaking the bead. That's always the hardest part.

The mark on the tire so that and you line it up with thie stem, you can put it back the same way we came off without affecting the balance. in certain cases where you have to patch the tire or any other reason you need to take your tire off put the same tire back on

Mike you can buy cheap plastic clamps that clip on the wheel edge to stop the tyre edge flipping back off as you lever the tyre back on....your using a mole wrench for the same job....around 3 or 4 bucks each.
Your doing a great job.....I use levers for the whole job 3 ft long.....and I take smaller steps or bites than you.
Been at it since I was 17....now 71....good work out.
The only thing I would use the HF rig for would be its bead breaker....quite good....I have my own....made myself.
I see you have a HF bubble balancer.....best place for thats is in the scrap bin.....it may look balanced and kid you.....but it wont be......they are total crap.

Great video, I don't have the manual changer I just use a few tire irons. I put the tire out in the sun for awhile before I mount it. Thermal expansion or being a bit more pliable from the heat seems to make it easier.
Very handy tips! I struggle with changing truck tires esp breaking the beads. I'll use your suggestion next time. I bought a no mar tire bar to replace the HF bar and it helps a ton as well as getting the tires warm..

I don't really like the shape of the the ends of this manual tire changing machine, however I used to work in a motorcycle shop, and we used machine with similar mechanisms on the motorcycle tires. The bar we used had one end for removing the tire, and one end was curved around with a circular piece of metal welded on top. The curve went around the edge of rim, and the circle would push the tire's bead around. The key to making this all work was to make sure that the bead on the opposite side of the rim was in the valley. I could have the old tire off and the new tire on in less than 2 minutes if everything was ready, and it took me about 5-7 minutes from breaking the bead, changing the tire and having their tire balanced on the bubble balancer. I've never seen a tire iron like it, so I think it was something that the owner made.
I see a video that shows exactly how to use your bar. Never mind everything else he does, and the machine mounted to the pallet, but at ~16 minutes, he shows how easy it is to use the curved end. I hope it helps. th-cam.com/video/_fKOt1ylEiI/w-d-xo.html
The roughest part of this job is seating the 2nd bead when the new tire goes on.
Hard to persuade the bead of the tire down into the relief channel on the rim while slipping the rest of tire on. 💢👊

I haven't used one of these yet (just bought it this morning) but from watching other videos when they use that other side of the bar they move in a counter clockwise rotation. Looked like when you were showing us how it wasn't working you were trying to go clockwise...maybe just change direction? Idk. I'll be playing with mine shortly!

yep I save a bunch of money by doing it myself. I also like the fact that on Sundays and holidays I don't have to look for a place to fix a tire! enjoy the holiday.

I’m going to weld a round piece of tubing that will fit down over the center piece to a square piece of tubing that will fit over the bar. This may keep the bar from twisting and coming up out of the rim when using the duck end.

I am not placing any warranties or taking any responsibility of my opinions/memories but when we for very long time ago were in a tire-change class I remember the teacher told us that they tested how much can a new car tire take pressure, and he said the rim broke first! So I quess there is not so much of danger to pump a double the norm pressure (Norm= 2,5 bar -> 4-5 bar) in a new car tire to have it pop... Old ones are sure a different thing.
Ya know even though I know they are going to pop I still jump a bit when they do because you never really know where that pop may be coming from! HA!
How funny. I watched your video to see how the clubbed end of the bar was supposed to work. I use the same end for mounting and dismounting like you resort to doing. I use an extra smaller tire iron to hold my progress instead of vice grips.
yep I gave up on that duckbill end as you saw. so many comment on how I should use that end but no one can point me to THEIR video using it correctly!

This one shows it being used as intended; what should be stressed even watching that one is that the bar should be kept at a higher angle than horizontal when mounting, to ensure the ramp guides the tire in and the hook stays engaged with the rim edge.
This tool is not for use with any wheels where appearance matters, because of the nature of how it works. However, it's still going to be better than just levering it on with the flat end. The flat end is intended to be used for demounting as was shown.

I see the mounting part is a challenge. Just wondering if it is possble to push the "far end" of the tire down into to the "channel" of the rim so that it will give some slack to the other end that you are working to the bead in ?

You don't have the tire below the edge of the rim I've got one like that I use the duckbill all the time it works perfect you need to keep the tire push down when you're using the duckbill below the lip it works perfect for me all the time
I agree that this is probably the issue. Need to get the sidewall down off the rim and it allows some slack so the tire can get more of an oval shape. Then the duck bill will “normally” work.
There are tires that never agree and I use the steel tire irons to then pry that last bit on like you did.
I do a lot of garden tractors and they can be a real bigger as the old tires can be dry rotted so no stretch. Cases like that there is no shame in cutting the bead on the tire to help get those off. Car tires rarely are that difficult.

That's the only way I could use it too, It would always slip out, so I only use that end.

You are using the mounting tool backwards, put the other side down and turn it, i put a little handle on it to keep it straight, wrap it with tape so you don’t scratch the rim, would love to show you a picture of how I did mine but don’t see any way to do that in here!

If u push the tire down on the side that is already on when mounting it makes it so much easier it gives slack instead of the tire being so tight against the wheel

You got your monies worth out of that tire. The only difference between you and Eric O is that when he cleans the rim, the rim spins. When you clean the rim, you spin. He has to push the far end down in the groove middle of the rim. Then the tire doesn't has as much tension as it does when still seating up all around.

I have mixed feelings about these tire changers. I much rather pay my local shop the $10 they charge to change my tires. I won’t risk damaging my wheels. 🤷🏼♀️
like to know where you get it done for $10. $30 around here to mount and balance one tire. and have changed 100's of tires with this cheap tire changer and worst damage was a few scratches which I can put up with the old rims I have.

Theres a local tire shop I go to sometimes that will dismount and remount car tires for 10 per wheel
Then 15 for truck wheels.
They are always fast and for 60$ they were also right there to give a deal on a tire too when I was in need of a 10 ply once upon a time.
But I still really appreciate having my own tire mounting post here on the homestead cause I'm not always rolling in the dough 😂🎉
You will actually damage your wheels just driving the car around worse than you would using one of these...
You do you, and perhaps the right way is harder, but I can tell you exactly what you’re doing wrong with the mount end:
You are hooked onto the rim lip where the bead is already below the lip and you are trying to push forward as if that will force the bead above the crossover point down. Of course, it refuses to… hence the problem.
You are actually supposed to be hooked onto the lip past the crossover point where the bead is still above the rim lip. The tire bead that is above the rim lip is supposed to ride along the flat outer face of the bar’s mount end. When you angle the bar it tilts the flat side past the rim lip so that the bead will slip down as you rotate away. Of course, this only works if the opposite side is pulled toward the center of the rim so that there is enough slack for the mount end to pull one end past the edge of the rim lip.
Not telling you to do it that way. Just telling you how it’s supposed to work and why it wasn’t working for you as demonstrated. Hope you appreciate it. :)

@@TheDisgruntledMechanic Wish I could but I only have the Mojolever for motorcycle rims now. Still, looking at the Mojolever is how I figured out the Pittsburgh/Harbor Freight mount head back when I still had it. Find a picture of the Mojolever and pay attention to the shape on the top side of the mount end and it’ll probably click for you too.
The mount end of the Mojolever bar part is not flat and is angled to push the bead out. The hook underneath obviously extends further than the rim and the bead, but the bar will be at an angle (demount head higher) that puts the bead past the edge of the rim. As the hook end moves out of the way the bead that was pushed out can slip under the rim lip on the trailing side. The bead that was already below the lip is what pulls more bead down from the mount head as the tool turns.
The No-Scuff Tire Tool and the one Sixtyfiveford made on TH-cam with ball bearings work with the same principle: Hook onto the lip where the bead is still above the rim and lever the bead out past the edge of the rim so that it can drop down as you rotate. It only works when you angle the bar and push the opposite bead toward the drop center of the rim. The ball bearing just means the bead doesn’t have to drag on the mount head as it gets pushed out, which the Mojolever and Pittsburgh bars do. Lowers friction.
@@TheDisgruntledMechanic Found one that shows it right. Try “How to Use a Manual Tire Changer - Harbor Freight” by Ratchets And Wrenches. About 7 minutes in he discusses how to set up and use the mount head. He doesn’t describe why like I did but he does tell you where the bead should be and demonstrates with the correct positioning.
Positioning the mount head past the point where the bead comes above the rim may seem counter-intuitive, but that’s exactly where it’s supposed to be.
