Hey Tom, great video. Followed it earlier to complete the same job. Unfortunately one of the bolts (awkward one under the bonnet closest to the windscreen) snapped when putting back on, and the two wider T20 screws at the top of the front grille cross threaded. Any recommendations/opinions on whether I should do anything about it? They don’t seem like critical fasteners, but would prefer the job was fully done...!
Maybe because he’s English living in England speaking the Queens English as that’s what they are called here,we also don’t call the bonnet a hood or the boot a trunk 😃👍

Do you have the cam follower issues with the FSI engine in the UK? It's a notorious issue at least here in the US, but I've heard it's caused or at least exacerbated by different US fuel or oil standards. I really like the MKV GTI in blue. Sadly, we never got them.
Woody Ridenour yes here in the UK we have major cam follower problems. Normally with modified ones. they have to be changed every 5,000 miles for modified and around 30,000 for standard engines.
Should note that these aren't all the same. In some models you need to prize the bumper from the wing by pushing the bumper forward. Also, if you have a standard automatic model, the auto trans module is located under the near-side wing. The module has to be unbolted first from underneath to allow the wing to come off. There currently aren't any videos on TH-cam telling you about these differences.
Aman A yes there is a foam pad behind the wing which apparently collects water and rusts the wing over time, although I’m not entirely convinced that’s what caused it as the foam was completely dry when I replaced my wing but I have left it out as it’s fine without it.

I believe that it's this foam that causes the corrosion over time but the foam is still there to serve a purpose.

The overall fitment of yours looked excellent after you fitted it, fingers crossed mine is the same - it sounds like you purchased from the same seller as where I've just purchased mine from.
Just to update - I finally got around to replacing the wing on mine last weekend. Very happy with the overall fitment & the paintwork is spot on. Just to also advise to anyone else wishing to replace theirs in future - besides re-using the inner foam & bumper mount, also make sure you re-use the small plastic inserts that are located along the lip & the lower edges of the wing towards the sill, I think there are three of them in total; these are used in conjunction with the wheel arch liner screws and helps the liner hold in place against the wing when re-fitting.
This doesn't look too bad to do being a gal, will try it! Out of curiosity, where did you pick up the spare wing from? I'm looking for one and for a bumper for my Mk5 TDI. Thx

@@lolly5453 It was straight forward. We changed the bumper and trims too as well as the wing. We found out the failure/rust of the wing was because of VW design flaw, in that, they changed material of the boot between the spring and the wing from rubber to sponge. Which nonce thought that was a good idea should be told never to practice engineering ever again and watch grass grow. One tip is to make sure the screws you take off are placed safely and labelled. Took us two days in total to replace bumper, wing, grills and trims - cleaned and buffed. Whilst we had the wheel off we gave the alloys a thorough clean :D
Great video but NEVER work under a car or under the wheel arch without the car's weight being fully supported on a proper axle stand. Don't rely on jacks, tyres or bricks!

The skill comes in refitting getting the panel gaps spot on.
Yeah if you are welding it on,modern vehicles panels are bolted on and if undamaged the replacement wing gaps should be perfect

No idea, but if it's bolted on (most modern cars are) you can probably do it yourself. If it's welded you'll probably need a garage to sort it.

Yep without it I think you'd get damage and noise from stone chips.
