A sidenote from Germany: Some medival town guards still exist. Oldest german targetshooters societies of 14th/15th are former town guards/;town militias. Other town guards still exist as historical uniformed , tradition keeping , ceremonial units.

I really want to have your option with all its details and the only thing really stopping me is the insane shipping costs from the US to here unfortunately.
Great looking piece. Attempting to find any resources for in depth handle construction, got everything else down relatively. Appears to be a cup by the pommel hiding the wrap, first time seen it like shown with it starting right off of the guard. I Am interested in doing one with a turks head knot.
Nice sword, though if i was going to fight with it I'd maybe rather have a plate in that ring instead of the little loop at the ricasso. never saw anything by you on TH-cam before. i met your guy Ryan at Tunnel Mill this weekend-was down there playing with fire. Wanted him to help me with a gladius hispaniensis I've been working on, but he didn't.
The ricasso legnth kinda makes me wonder, kinda looks the example you based the munich of could have been a repurposed longsword, just simplified the guard to a cross guard, lengthen the grip and you essentially have a short longsword grip.
Very nice -- can you tell me the dimensions on the grip? - the section with the wire wrap - i.e. 7/8th where it buts up to the cross guard, then the swell is 1 1/8th then it tapers down to 3/4th from the back view (like you are holding the sword in hand ready to use it) and is 4" long from cross guard to pommel , and is whatever sizes from the side view since it is not round
This example is absolutely beautiful and worth every cent I'm sure! Swords of this kind were used on ships by sailors at the time too and I'm sure in every other sort of occupation at the time 😅 The name has always seemed strange to me.
Seems kind of fancy and expensive for either a sailor or a cop to own. Offhand I'd think a simple cutlass/hanger kind of thing would be more probable for either.

When you state that none were cylindrical, are you prepared to say that the ones that are cylindrical are either fakes, repaired, or done in the style but not for the Munich Town Guard?
We are not aware of any done with cylindrical pommels from period. Doesn't mean there aren't any, just all the examples we have interacted with have been ovid.

I have seen photos of antiques with cylindrical pommels, and I expected them to have existed in the period due to the variation of manufacturers. But for a reproduction, I prefer the ovoid shape due to how I expect it to feel in the hand. Btw, to murky the waters even more, I have recently seen a photo of an antique Munich Town Guard rapier with the characteristic pommel, grip, hilt, and even the armoury (?) markings on the blade, but with a long and narrower blade. I can easily expect that there was one guy in charge of a squad that wanted a long rapier blade to stand out by comparison to the troops. 😄

You really, REALLY have to wonder if in the originals (if they follow the same pattern) were not just recycled and repurposed arming sword blades from Late Medieval and Renaissance armories. That long "ricasso" looks an awful lot like a tang, and that wide, 90 degree corner at the base of the blade, looks identical in both the width of the tang and length to that of a Late Medieval arming sword with its hilt and quillions removed. It is a recorded fact that some Medieval blades were refitted with different hilts and moodified for practical use all the way inti the Early Modern and Modern period -- the fact that there were so many of these found in Germany, and if all of them have that narrow ricasso and wide blade, could be a sign of mass recycling. They do love recycling in Germany, and steel is valuable, and it would not take much stretch of the imagination to adopt an old blade to a new fashion. Even that point kf balance lines up with what could be expected from putting all that extra guard and hilt weight that far back on the blade. Not saying this is all the case -- just very striking, and I wonder if any studies have been made on the age of the blades in the originals?
That's a good observation. If there were only one of them, then it would be more possible. Most of them have very similar blades and many of them have the mark of the Munich sword smith Wolfgang Statler, who was active at the turn of the 17th century. I think these blades are clearly related to those earlier arming swords though, as you suggest.😊.
I think we can clearly see those being inspired by or even the final step of what an "arming sword" can be. Just adding the then modern and overall better hand protection. I don't think however there can be inference that the blades themselves are old and recycled one. Too consistent and a great number of them in a short period for that.

I have seen individual examples of French and German "heirloom" swords (passed down tbrough generations of noble families) in which the blade is from the late Medieval era, with modifications to allow usage surprisingly late into the Modern Era. One in particular was a 14th-century blade on an 18th-century Prussian officer's hilt, still used in battle after 400 years. But the fact that there are many of these guardsman swords, all with the same maker's mark -- yeah, that sounds more probable. Still striking how medieval-like those blades are. Rapier hilt with broadsword blade, is definitely NOT typical of the fighting fashion of hat time, and that's what struck me. Even more interesting they were specifically designed that way. Always fascinating to see developments going in unexpected directions.
I'm curious about the handling as it's heavy, but balanced close to the hilt. It must affect the guards you prefer and how it turns. It will be a very different beast compared to a rapier or saber, or even a simple arming sword.
It moves very nicely, but it's definitely a substantial weapon. I think this is one reasons it's sometimes considered a cavalry sword. It moves very nicely through in between guards and loves to cut around.
This sword is on my wish list... Sadly, I haven't been able to hold any job for long (company insolvency, pandemic, fired under a pretext because I refused to do more overtime then legally allowed).
