Anybody who sings knows that key change took a lot of work. Just give them their Emmy already!
A modulation is not the tough part for any vocalist who has a decent ear. I know from experience. Modulating up or down has never been hard for me. What's tough is getting the arrangement down pat and the rehearsal time to get it flawless for live performance . Jennifer didn't just get up and sit in with them, and that wasn't just one rehearsal to get it perfected like that.
Two bands I've been in would do what the Eagles used to do, and that is to sit in a circle, no mics and only a guitar (or keyboard) to get the key correctly, and then block out the parts if it wasn't just a simple 1-3-5 harmony Then sing a capella till it was perfect. Only then would we get on the mics and sing with the full instrumentation. The Eagles called that type of vocal rehearsal The Circle of Fear. Don't know why because I loved doing it that way!

I'm truly baffled that there are so many people here who can't tell the difference between screaming and soulful, gospel-infused singing. They must have never listened to any work by vocal powerhouses such as Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Whitney Houston or Patti LaBelle. It's a spiritual style of singing that grew out of black churches. Jennifer Hudson passionately belted out her vocals in this tradition and did a phenomenal job.
beselbic, I think Jennifer did a phenomenal job on the song. I think Pentatonix wanted her to sing that style and they stood back and let her have her moment. Not everyone likes the style of music but for me, it's my favourite. If I'm having a bad day I put some good soul music on and it makes it okay. Peace......

april 2019 my grandfather was in home hospice. he was raised southern baptist and the hymnals were his second bible. he was the minister of music and my grandmother played the organ for the choir. during his last days i played this for him. the way i’m not religious but felt the spirit touching all of us while we listened. he died a few days later but we played so much gospel and i believe they say him up into heaven. i miss him everyday and listen to this song when i want to relive the moment we spent together listening to this song while he made his transition.
This is my personal testimony.
I used to believe that I was super strong, super smart, capable of taking care of myself, and even though I have always been a believer, my faith in God wasn't as strong as it was in myself.
Two years ago I had a serious personal problem with my family, without going into details; at that point, my family was my God, they were the reason I live for, in other words, my "EVERYTHING", but due to the issue with them one day they ALL, everybody abandoned me, over the night... I was left without anything and anyone to talk to. Months passed by, on which I couldn't sleep, lost my appetite and also my will to live. I pretended for a while that I was fine ‘cus I full of pride so I couldn’t admit that this time I wasn’t gonna be able to fix myself…until I couldn't take it any longer.
One night when the pain was unbearable, and desperation took over me, finally, I realized that I couldn’t keep living that way, so I started planning how to kill myself, I gave some thoughts to the idea because I wanted to be effective and final, I needed to stop the pain but before I did it I got on my knee, very angry with God, at 3 something am, I screamed to God "IF YOU CARE ABOUT ME, DO SOMETHING BECAUSE I CAN'T DO THIS ANY LONGER!!!, I AM A GOOD PERSON AND YOU KNOW IT!!!
I CAN'T TAKE THIS PAIN ANY LONGER!!! I DON'T WANT THIS LIFE ANY MORE!!, IF YOU DON'T DO SOMETHING I AM!!!
IF YOU SAVE ME I PROMISE I WILL DEDICATE THE REST OF MY LIFE TO YOU!!!”
After this, all I remember comes to me like a flashback, I swear, I don't know how I got back to my bed( my last memory was been in my knee by my bed). Later on( I am not sure how long it passed), on this flashback I opened my eyes for a second and my room was full of extraordinary light, so strong I couldn't keep my eyes open, I was in a fetal position on my bed, my room was full of Jesus’s presence(I didn't need to see his face because the love and peace that overcame my body, the feeling that fulfilled my inner being was screaming the existence of Jesus in my bedroom). I woke up at 10:35am as A TOTAL NEW PERSON, I felt like I have lost a heavyweight I was carrying on, I was radiant, hunger, happy and full of hopes and plans for my life... Jesus saved me! he cleansed my spirit from evil desires OVER THE NIGHT! just the way my family forsakes me. I have been wanting to give my testimony for almost 2 years, I guess the Lord decided that today was the day, he is REAL people, he is, and all we have to do is to redeem ourselves to him and ask for help, he is waiting for us to do so, this is mentioned in the Bible on Matthew 11:28 “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
We don't have to suffer alone, Jesus died for us, so we can live an abundant and long life.
My feeling towards my family hasn’t changed at all, if anything I love them more than ever, nor I hold any negative feelings against them, I still will give my life for any of them, the only difference now is that I will ask Jesus first if he is ok with this.

You can't hold back the power of someone who sings with the heart and soul. Pentatonix has great harmony, and terrific arrangement skills, but in this song they are basically the accompaniment for the soloist. I would love to hear her sing other hymns of faith. She probably doesn't even need a microphone when singing in church.

She's supposed to be the lead.
Soya Beans It just shows that she's a one lane musician. It takes a different level of skill to be able to blend in an ensemble and to be able to stand out as a soloist. I think it says more about the group's talent and less about hers. In my opinion.

My Dad died November 2019, this was the last song at his service. This version is beautiful, God bless Pentatonix and the wonderful Jennifer Hudson, you helped to heal a very painful wound that I’m still healing from. If you’ve lost someone that you loved very much and are in pain right now, I’m with you. You’re not alone and may you find peace in this beautiful music.

Much love for Jennifer, she’s amazing. I just wish she would control the volume of her voice a little more. She doesn’t need to belt the whole entire song and blow away everyone in Pentatonix.
Leslie Tripi think that’s more of how the sound was mixed. She has to belt it to hit the notes, so it really is a matter of pulling away and relying on the sound techs to create a good blend.
