This was my wife's favorite song. I love the tune, though the lyrics seem kind of dark toward the end. When she died last year, I composed another verse in her memory. I'm no musician, but this expresses how much I miss her: I've heard it said that love is blind That pain and heartaches all you'll find And baby, it was true until I met ya You lifted me from dark despair And showed me what it means to care And now my heart is singing hallelujah Hallelujah, hallelujah Hallelujah, hallelu----jah This one's for you, love. I miss you!
Holy fuck, when the second vocalist began, the way he connected with the lyric, I got goosebumps on my arms and my legs. I can't think of the last time that happened. That's just, damn. I didn't realise I could get them on my legs as well as my arms. Jesus that second vocalist expresses such a strong connection to the lyric .
I always feel my boy Kevin doesn’t get enough recognition in comparison to the other members. His skill and artistry is the foundation of every song and throughout the years he has constructed some crazy percussion around songs most beatboxers have no clue how to handle. He has a wonderful gift to both blend in or fade back at just the right time while at the same time taking the crescendos to a level, in volume, complexity, and intensity, astounding for a single percussionist all the while constructing them using only his body!!!
So I didn’t know his name was Kevin till I saw your post; he is phenomenal.and each of these guys have their own skillset. Bioody brilliant, ! As we say in Scotland X
@@lorifriel2302 his name is Kevin "KO" Olusola and he's the literal backbone of PTX and I freak out every time they're live because he does it all, at once, without messing up.
Pay close attention to Kevin, listen to him, he's doing something incredibly special in this arrangement, especially during Mitch's solo. He's so underrated and slept on as a singer.
He is gender fluid and goes by both he/she and him/her. Mitch frequently wears women's clothing, but can also rock the masculine look. I guess it depends on what he/she is feeling that day.

To all the people who think they're lip syncing you are completely wrong Scott changed his part with a bit of vibrato in a couple of places and his voice goes raspy at 03:22 I have seen them live and seen Scott cover the bass on Standing By which Avi sings the lead on. They are amazing better than any other singers I have ever heard sheer vocal beauty.
THANK YOU! Honestly, I don't understand why people think they're lipsyncing. It sounds almost exactly like the studio version, but you can hear a few differences.
100% sure lip synced. Its just impossible to provide this quality of sound and definition in a live concert. Maybe they sung live, but for the video they remastered it with a studio version of the song. :) however, still a good performance + song!
It's sort-of give and take. There are moments when they're undoubtedly live, like when they switch from person to person that has their own specific verse. Scott, Avi, Kirstie, and Mitch each sang live (at least for their start). The chorus and in-betweens I believe were lip synced along with most of the A Capella beat. The end/climax is also live. I'd say it's equal parts live as it is lip synced.
WARNING: Detailed video breakdown and explanation below. Thumb up so others can read for themselves! Allow me to preface this by saying that I am a true, hardcore Pentatonix fan. I have been following them closely since 2011, and I own every single song that's been released on iTunes. I also sing/perform as a vocal bass, and have for many years, so you can imagine that I've probably memorized every solo and bass part that Avi has. I record at home in my own studio and produce, mix, and master all of my vocal samples. I might also mention that I've listened to their studio rendition of Hallelujah countless times. As a hardcore fan, I owe it to pretty much every other fan and, of course, PTX themselves to dig in and defend them when their credibility is under attack. However, as a musician and a perfectionist, I also think it's imperative to call it when I see that something is amiss. Seriously, I could probably out-fangirl most of the people that are going to be pissed off at me (and in blatant denial) after reading this. I have listened (with studio monitors) to this performance about six times now. This next part is going to hurt some feelings. The hive-mind PTX fandom tumblr lurkers are probably going to roast me alive below. Oh well. *1.* Beyond a shadow of a doubt, parts of this performance are lip-synced to a pre-recording. I'm assuming that this was not by choice of the group. You have to realize that big-time producers of prime time television squeeze their margins of error so tightly for things like this, that they probably didn't give PTX a choice in the matter. Parts of it were cherry picked, and their mic gains were adjusted accordingly. Kudos to the guy running the sound. I'm sure he's paid accordingly. *2*. I KNOW what Avi sounds like when he performs live, I've heard him perform in person, and I know for a fact that he did not *flawlessly* copy and perform his solo from the studio recording. It's just not humanly possible. (although, if anyone could do it, it would either be him or Mitch) The timbre, the vocal inflections, the subtle nuances from that ONE take in the studio - It's all there. It's either a direct rip from the studio recording, or it's slightly remastered in an attempt to match the acoustics of this performance hall. Avi did *not* sing his solo live in this video. Sorry guys. They've had some absolutely outstanding live performances lately, but this was not all live. *3.* Scott tripped up a little bit on his entrance at 0:58. Watch his mouth closely. You heard "Da-da-duum" as Avi was about to sing, but you didn't see it from Scott. (and Kevin just doesn't have the range to hit a G2 without serious frying. He's a tenor, through and through.) Lip-sync! Granted, every note I hear afterwards is most definitely Scott, whether it be live or pre-recorded. He has a particular tone when he sings at the bottom of his range, as everyone does. Here's what was real: *1.* Scott's opening verse. That was legit. (They also wouldn't dare lip syncing someone whose face is zoomed in to the max from the beginning. Accidents can happen, as shown at 0:58) The melisma, the "riff ticks", everything. He has a knack for nailing it when it counts. *2.* I do not doubt that Scott sang the bass part during Avi's solo. I am fully aware of his range, and that he sings a D2 in "I Should Tell Ya Momma On You" He is probably capable of frying a low Db or C. *3.* The climax following 3:30 was, for the most part, totally live. Avi was a god here. *4.* Mitch's solo. At least until "It's a cold and it's a broken..." It's Mitch. 'Nuff said. I am a hardcore PTX fan, and I always will be. However, that does NOT reserve the right for me to make excuses for my favorite band when I know otherwise. In an instance like this, I just have to get over it, take a step back and think "wait a minute..." Then the reality hits, and I think "Oh. Primetime National T.V... If it was their choice, they'd do it totally live." Guys, you just have to remember that by participating, they're getting a lot of air time and exposure that a LOT of people will see. The producers of the program pretty much have the final say in what transpires and how things go at these events. That is all. Remember to be civil. We all love PTX, and we have way too many reasons to be happy and just move on. Keep calm, and sing on :)
Effectious well said I'm a huge fan and I'm pretty sure some was recorded but I know they can sing perfectly live so I don't mind, I'm just so glad they have there own special so proud haha 👌👌👌
it _is_ lipsync. I had my doubts, but I've heard them live, and even with her ability there's no way that Kirstie can pull off that high note the way she does here. it sounds almost identical to the video version. Mitch's high note at 3:10 IS the video track. there's a small fade between actual audio and recording, very subtle, but I have an ear for those. if you have the tech, overlay the video track, inverted, on top of this one, and cancel it out. you'll see the difference.
Effectious i just want to say that i really appreciated this!! i had my suspicions watching, and throughout my second and third watch i looked at everything you pointed out. sorry if people are rude to you, but i'm glad someone with knowledge was honest.
Oh good I was not the only one who thought they were lips syncing... when I watched I felt that something was weird because they mouths and the song were not right (Barely though) also at some points, in multiple situations I saw some over exaggeration done with some hard parts which just did not match the tone the song was giving off in the video
Everytime tears out of my eyes for Holy God Jesus Christ swirls of Holy Spirit all around us now ... Can you imagine how Heaven will feel like this everyday
That moment when Avi's solo comes up, and you're listening to him kill it, but then you notice the bass and think, "Damn, Avi is killin' that bass line!" And it suddenly clicks.... Holy Shit, it's freakin Scott!!!! Ugh, why are they all so crazy talented like that!

@carliza loves bangtan !! Hi Carliza, just a very friendly FYI, it's called lip-synching when people synchronize their lips movement to a song but don't actually sing. It's what Milli Vanilli got in trouble for in the early 1990's because someone else was singing/recording their songs but making the public believe it was them by lip-synching pseudo-live performances. It was a huge scandal. LOL! Anyway, I must agree with you... Pentatonix is EXTREMELY TALENTED and real!!! I'm so glad I found them. I will be looking for more. :-) :-) I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE their cover of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody and Hallelujah. Absolutely brilliant! :-)
I saw Pentatonix live when they came to Toronto in 2023. My friend had tickets and had an extra one. I had to skip soccer to attend but no regrets! What an amazing performance. You guys are amazing.
Closely watch Scott’s mouth starting at 0:57 First time I’ve ever noticed them use either a transitional backfill or lip sync track between Avi and Scott’s bass parts. No doubt that Scott can take over for Avi for that part, but his mouth movements do not line up whatsoever during the transition. Don’t understand why they did it.
2:58 Listen carefully for Kevin's part. When you hear it, the sound totally changes and it's beautiful. Kevin is incredibly underrated as a singer in this group
@@samoyedpups4673 Well to us God and Jesus are one in the same. Yes to me when I say Jesus is with them in turn I am saying your God is with them. Lifes too short brother. God bless
The thing that amazed me the most about this video was actually the crowd. They just stood there with the 'candles' and enjoyed the music. No one thad their phone out, which is so rare nowadays.
Just once, I'd love to hear a recording of this song by them, broken out into the individual tracks for each singer to hear exactly what they're doing line by line. Especially Scott and Avi, the way they switch back and forth between baritone, bass, and lead, depending on the verse, but come together so seamlessly as a whole.
If you just listen closely, it's pretty easy to differentiate their voices. I don't know how else to help you other than to tell you to learn which voice belong to who, and then just keep your ears peeled. Watching their videos helps too because then you can see who is singing what.
Kevin Olusola, the young black man, has a beautiful voice. He sings solos less often because his primary role is non-instrumental percussionist. He does sing a solo in Pentatonix's cover of "Mary, Did You Know".
I've heard there was a secret chord That David played and it pleased the Lord But you don't really care for music, do ya? When I watched this performance for the first time and realized it is Scott doing the bass part when avi sings I couldn't believe it, I replayed it so much and I fell in love
"Scott couldn't do those bass notes because he doesn't have that range." Actually, he does, and whenever Avi has solos in any other songs, Scott takes over. "It sounds too perfect." Highly possible that due to a combination of great mic balance (usually absent from their live performances, excluding their concerts of course), maybe a little tweaking/sharpening to make it prime-time TV ready, and pure talent, it sounds perfect. No reason to assume it was lip-synced though. "Kevin's stomps don't match the sound." Kevin is an amazing beatboxer and in this case, the stomps were most like used for visual effect. He really only needs his vocal chords. Go watch their performance of Aha (there are many live versions available on TH-cam too)- he does an extremely complicated and fast beatbox sequence with nothing except his mouth.
"The equipment couldn't have recorded them so well, especially Kevin." This special took months to prepare and plan. During those months, I don't doubt that a lot of time was spent ensuring that the necessary equipment (mics because that's all they really need) was used and placed exactly where they were needed in order to get the right sound. "They were over-dramatising their singing." Is that even a valid argument? They're singers, and they're singing with emotion. Besides, you can hear them take audible breaths that match their movement on camera. I'm not completely denying the possibility that it could be lip-synced. I'm just saying that the above arguments aren't valid, and that I highly doubt it was.
If you look at some comments above you can tell some parts were clearly lip synced, it's mainly because of the major prime-time TV setting but theres no denying it.
+Effectious Thank you so much for this comment. Its the best one here and by far beats most other people's because it is rational, thought through, respectful, and kind.
I know Scott gets the spotlight a lot, BUT HOLY CRAP. We talk about Avi's range all the time (which is amazing, he's my fav) but Scott had to do bass in this song! AND HE KILLED IT!!!

Right so beautiful!

ChanceofPie
Is he a she?
No, he is a he.
He is gender fluid and goes by both he/she and him/her. Mitch frequently wears women's clothing, but can also rock the masculine look. I guess it depends on what he/she is feeling that day.

They cheered for Kirstie too

You know, of the 100 different "covers" of Leonard Cohen's " Hallelujah "...... this is by far the best.....
by far
This was wonderful but K.D. Lang's version is still my favourite.
for what it's worth Leonard said this was his favorite version as well so your in good company. :)
I know.
This version is amazing but in my opinion, the one by Jeff Buckley is the best, by far.
Um? You are failing to consider the fact that they can re-record a studio version with slight changes to throw people like you off.
100% sure lip synced. Its just impossible to provide this quality of sound and definition in a live concert. Maybe they sung live, but for the video they remastered it with a studio version of the song. :)
however, still a good performance + song!
TheJoblacki Nah. I saw it.
Specifically, the Up On the Housetop performance.
(although, if anyone could do it, it would either be him or Mitch)
The timbre, the vocal inflections, the subtle nuances from that ONE take in the studio - It's all there.
He's a tenor, through and through.)
Lip-sync!
Granted, every note I hear afterwards is most definitely Scott, whether it be live or pre-recorded. He has a particular tone when he sings at the bottom of his range, as everyone does.
Here's what was real:
*1.* Scott's opening verse. That was legit. (They also wouldn't dare lip syncing someone whose face is zoomed in to the max from the beginning. Accidents can happen, as shown at 0:58)
The melisma, the "riff ticks", everything. He has a knack for nailing it when it counts.
*2.* I do not doubt that Scott sang the bass part during Avi's solo.
I am fully aware of his range, and that he sings a D2 in "I Should Tell Ya Momma On You"
He is probably capable of frying a low Db or C.
In an instance like this, I just have to get over it, take a step back and think "wait a minute..."
Then the reality hits, and I think "Oh. Primetime National T.V... If it was their choice, they'd do it totally live."
Guys, you just have to remember that by participating, they're getting a lot of air time and exposure that a LOT of people will see.
Exactly! I'm so proud of how far they've come. I can't hold something against them that wasn't their choice to begin with.
it _is_ lipsync.
Can you imagine how Heaven will feel like this everyday
i dont think this song was for jesus.

AVI IS FUCKING AMAZING, I STILL CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY HE LEFT THE BAND
3:46 You can hear Avi’s amazing bass voice in the background.
Love it.
Sí y también al final ese murmullo nasal de Avi toca las notas más bajas y hermosas 💫 Es sinolemente genial su voz
It doesn't sound the same without him
@@Alberthoward3right9upyeah it's better
@@z1510r nah bruh
The girl looks like a pretty little doll that I owned as a child!
I just wish to also hear the young black man sing a solo part!
Kevin Olusola, the young black man, has a beautiful voice. He sings solos less often because his primary role is non-instrumental percussionist. He does sing a solo in Pentatonix's cover of "Mary, Did You Know".
Thanks for telling me! Hallelujah is the first song I ever heard from this group, this year!!
He also sang a little solo in their Imagine cover
Sandra Truster the beat boxers name is Kevin btw, the "girls" name is kirstie.
Kristen Maldano is her name even though I probably spelled her name wrong
I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do ya?
Well it goes like this: the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, hmm
Well, your faith was strong, but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew ya
She tied you to the kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Well baby, I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew ya
And I've seen your flag on the marble arch
And love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Well, maybe there's a God above
But all I've ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya
And it's not a cry that you hear at night
It's not somebody who has seen the Light
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
I love Avi's voice so im always excited when he leads. But im also excited bc that means Scotty does bass
Veronica Jones it’s such a smooth switch as well
Fantastisch
When I watched this performance for the first time and realized it is Scott doing the bass part when avi sings I couldn't believe it, I replayed it so much and I fell in love
It never dawned on me that Scott does bass sometimes until I watched sound of silence. My jaw dropped lol
@Julia Sprengeler Avi just left the team, not dead.
can we talk how kriste is a Angel from heaven
Yes Kirstie is :)
whos kriste
A group with genuine talent, I have never heard a group sing live so beautifully
Yes !
Like !
They are my favorite singing group
Stephanie Chia lol who are you talking to
If you look at some comments above you can tell some parts were clearly lip synced, it's mainly because of the major prime-time TV setting but theres no denying it.
Scott is one of my most favorite musicians throughout musical history. He is unbelievably talented.
Mitch's outfit I'm crying
Give her a break, fighting the demi gorgon is hard work u know.
Josef Tinagan IM CRYIN
lmao me ASF
I miss the beautiful Jewish boy in this group. I wish he hadn't left the group, he truly has an amazing voice.
Avi Kaplan still has a beautiful voice. He looks happier now than when he left. His smile will melt any heart. Check out his latest recording. It can blow any mind th-cam.com/video/LE24UTH3pmQ/w-d-xo.html

This is my single favorite chrostmas song. My grand parents,(both of whom are gone, may they rest in peace) were part of their church choir for nearly 20 years, and every year they did a candle lit rendition of silent night.
Scotts bass part at 1:00 is so good. Baritons may not be extreme in highs or lows like tenors/sopranos and basses but their versatility is just insane.
That's all Scott with the low notes as well, Avi's not helping.
