@@johnhancockretro Your comment that this is a "playable documentary" seems spot-on. What a great concept, an innovative way to bring new value to old games. This could be (and should be!) done with other consoles, genres, etc.
Just picked up my copy and will dive in after work! I'm 44 so that was the first system to bring the arcade into our home. The 2600/5200 and NES are what really grew my still going love of video games. And Digital Eclipse can do no wrong when it comes to these compilations and history presentation aspect.
My parents started out with a Pong clone computer, and we've bought our first home computer back in 1984. Which was an MSX-1. We've had several games on it which were also available on the 2600, such as River Raid and Keystone Kapers. Fun times. I'm 45 myself, so we've grown up in pretty much the same era. Friend of mine owned the C64 and an NES. We've bought a SNES later on, and my sister had a Game Boy. They lasted till 1995 when my parents bought our first family PC.
I was born in 95 and got into gaming long after Atari's spotlight has dimmed from the stage, this is a great experience for me since I long for the days game before my time and the behind the scenes videos are amazing. The history that Atari made cannot be overlooked Also Lunar Lander is my new favorite game!
Good stuff, John. I made sure to get my copy first thing this morning. It's like you're getting three items in one: A history of Atari, a collection of retro games, and new games reimagined from the classics. I'm really pleased with this. Thanks for the video.
The is a HUGE milestone for Atari. I own an Atari VCS and it’s an amazing console for what it is and highly overlooked. Great video John I know I’ll be getting the VCS copy as soon as it’s released.
It’s actually kind of refreshing to see Atari be so brutally honest about their mistakes. They were an innovator for sure, just couldn’t keep up with the trends for the time
Well, it's not actually Atari. They no longer exist. All that's left is the logo and brand nostalgia. This was produced by a company called Digital Eclipse.
LOL Yeah. I mean Sega Ages Space Harrier, the Astro Mini V and that "little mini 2 thing" that released exclusively via Amazon just a couple of weeks ago. 🙈 We still got the short end with no Lunar 1&2 and STILL no Rocket Knight Adventures or Snatcher (but that could just be on Konami's end). While I agree, more of their consoles need to be represented (especially the Saturn), Sega gets a LOT of unwarranted hate. The fact we even got an official English Phantasy Star Online 2 release is STILL crazy to me. Remember, they gave their blessing for Streets of Rage 4 too. These naysayers are either trolling at this point, or they are some truly ungrateful bitsies!
I worked for ATARI (Post Infogrames) throughout the 2000s. Yes, it was a different company from the 70s and 80s, but we had published some hugely popular franchises like DragonBallZ, Backyard Sports, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Driver, TestDrive, etc, which all sold well, but damn, we had such awful executive mgmt. Nevertheless, it was a tremendous experience, and I got to meet Nolan Bushnell at an E3 in '05, which I'll never forget. I still have lots of one-off ATARI nostalgic items which I'm sure I can easily sell for quite a bit, but would never dream of getting rid of.
I'm blown away. In comes this Atari collection to set a new high bar for compliations. I'm not even the hugest fan of Atari as a brand or as a gaming legacy but I'm TRULY a fan and a lover of gaming history and memorabilia and this just absolutely goes over the top with it all. I REALLY love the way you put it, John, that this is essentially a "playable documentary". I think that definitely describes this better than any other way possibly could and I think THIS idea should be the goal for other similar collections going forward, not just simply throwing the games on there with some blurbs and boxart.
I just got this for my PC off STEAM and I must say, this is how a Video Game compilation should be made. Loads of games, videos, and history of the industry, and not JUST about Atari! I am truly impressed, and I haven't even really scratched the surface of this whole compilation yet! It does include one of my ALL-TIME favorite games, Tempest, in the mix! Well done Atari!
Just go through watching all the videos and looking at the timelines. WOW. This is a brutally honest tale of what started my obsession in life ... I was 5 when my parents brought home Pong! I always say that I was born at just the right time, because I got to see all that play out in real time. Love it!
We got our Pong when I was about 6, so I know exactly what you mean. Starting from that point, it's amazing to think about how much things have evolved from then
I am so excited for this! While I didn’t grow up with Atari nor am I truthfully a huge fan, I have learned to appreciate what Atari has done and has meant for the gaming industry as a whole. Without Atari it’s hard to say where gaming would be now, or even if it would exist at all
I ended up picking up Atari 50 mainly for the historical aspect. The interface and presentation is really slick! I already own the other Atari compilation on Switch, but Atari 50 finally gives it the final polish.
Absolutely gonna pick this up. What a great year for retro collections and compilations, by companies that are passionate about the representation of the materials rather than just dumping stuff on a disk or system.
I just ordered it. You finally sold me on this game. I am getting this for PS5. Btw, great channel.😀 I originally got my Atari VCS back in the fall of 1977. I'm glad my dad bought this as it was $199.99 which converted today would about $950.00 and people complained about the 3DO pricing lol.
Great job on vid. Me and Atari shared our 50th bday this year!! I remember fondly when i got mine in '80 for 8th bday!!! Vanguard and River Raid played with friends (some who have sadly passed) were some of the best times from childhood!!
I am so impressed with this! My first console ever was an Atari 2600Jr. which I bought back in 1987. The nostalgia alone is worth it, but I am also very happy to revisit some of my old games with trophy/achievement support, and even have it on my Switch for goodness on the go! This is how you should make a retro collection!
Wow! Tempest 2000 on Switch sounds like a major winner to me. In fact, the whole Jaguar set of games is very appealing to have on the go :) I really like all the historical aspects of this compilation- it's so awesome. I was thinking I'd wait to get this after the price drops... but now, I'm thinking this will be an instant buy. I'm really intrigued by the new version of Yars Revenge- that looks like something special!
I don’t hate Atari but i don’t love them either as much as Nintendo (I’ve owned more Nintendo systems than any other) or Sega, they’re just not as top tier or innovative as Nintendo or Sega.
To me this is more of a time capsule and history lesson than just a collection of games I want to play. I didn’t grow up with these games, they’re before my time (PS1 era) and while I normally gravitate towards Japanese games and gaming history, I have a lot of respect for Atari because of how passionately people like you talk about them. Subscribed, great video :)
I completely agree with you John. I loved it so much I also put out a video review. It was exactly what I hoped for, and way more than I expected it to be.
I've just watched the other John also talking about this. Along with your endorsement, I need to get this. My father brought home a Pong system when I was about 6 (and given I live in New Zealand, this was quite a big deal in the day), and I have just loved Atari ever since. Give me Missile Command and a 2600, and you won't see me for 3 days 😅 Keep up the great work John 👍
It's almost like walking into the Museum of the Moving Image's Arcade exhibit here in NYC. I haven't been there in awhile, but I hope it is still there. As for this, I might pick it up for my PS4.
Man, for me this package is gold, a timeline guide full with company history info, hd photos of all systems, staff clips, antique flyers and cabinets, and over 100 full games to play (some especially new).
Just wanted to mention that after watching this review, I ran out to my local Best Buy and grabbed a physical copy for the Xbox. I have every game emulated on a card in a Retron77. I mean, a lot of people have they emulated, but this got me to buy as much for the non-game material as the games.
I am so happy with mine too! I bought it for the Switch and the PS4. Airworld is pretty darn good. I am getting into it and need to figure it out. There are so many good games on this!!!
John, I really appreciate this great in depth review. I know Atari has not been the same from what it was but that was my time when they were in their prime. Atari will always be huge nostalgia for me and hold a special place in my childhood. Excited that this was well done and can’t wait to purchase.
This is rad. I’m stoked for Atari to get a win with this release. I’ll be getting a Switch copy for our house. Anyone else thinking they should do a proper Airworld physical release for the 2600?
I remember one Christmas Eve when a cousin of mine got the home version of PONG. We stayed up almost all night long playing it. Then, on Dec. 25 1982 is when I got the Atari 2600, and for three years, I played the hell out of it with games like Yars Revenge, Haunted House, and Pitfall before moving on to a Commodore 64. Even in the 80s, you couldn't officially consider yourself a gamer until you got your very first game console.
Thank you for the review John. I seen this collection but didn't pay it much attention since I thought it was just a collection of games I already have. Now that I know it's got a lot of the history of Atari as well as games for some of its PC line is just amazing.
Wow, this is awesome! As a kid I was so jealous that I didn’t have a NES for the first two years after it released. I had a Atari 2600 handed down to me with tons of games. I loved it and even called it “my Nintendo”. BreakOut was my first love. Definitely getting this!
This along with Atari Flashback Collection practically go hand in hand. I love this collection so far and FINALLY getting to play Tempest 2000 and Cybermorph is unreal to me.
As someone who owned various Atari hardware in the 1980s (mostly their XL and XE computers but others too) and played their games in the arcades in those days, the nostalgia is real! There are things presented here that I did not even know about. Star Raiders was amazing. The re-imagined classics here look great, especially Haunted House! Too bad about the lack of third-party games but I'd for sure pick this collection up although maybe not at full price.
I'm glad I watched this. I passed on the physical last week, just assuming it was yet another 2600 compilation. There's some really worthwhile stuff here.
I was born in 74 and owned one of these as a kid. I still have and play it at 48 years old today on a rare Sunnyvale Woody 6 Switch Console. With wooden board inside with heavy soldering and chrome switch. Strong & Reliable no need for this have the real deal.
I don't have any personal experience with Atari but I am interested in video game history. This collection looks super cool, gonna have to pick this up.
Thank you for making this video. I remember playing Warlords for hours with my brother back in the early 80's...man, those paddles🙂lots of great memories, I'm picking this up for sure.
This is a love letter for those 40 and older of course the younger folks can enjoy . But for us old people (43) this is an awesome time machine if nostalgia
Well done John! Wish it had more but you have the licensing issues and if folks want more there are a number of options to get more. For the cost it tells a great story. After playing it now on Xbox would say highly recommend!
Great video, John! I only missed the huge chapter of Atari ST/TT/Falcon in this compilation. Besides, I love vector graphics too, dedicated my whole channel to it.
I love the 5200. My brother and I always played our 2600 but one day we went to a friends house and he introduced us to the 5200. He showed us the game countermeasure and we were blown away by that game. One night in early December my parents took my brother and I to Toys R Us and we saw the 5200 on display. We begged our parents to buy us the 5200 as our Christmas gift and their response was “we will think about it”. To us that meant that they were NOT going to buy it for us. When we arrived home, they went to the trunk of the car and began pulling bags full of Christmas gifts they bought for our other family members. Suddenly my brother and I noticed that they had the 5200 covered with a coat. They were trying to hide it from us in order to surprise us for Christmas. My brother and I got so excited when we saw it and couldn’t wait for Christmas to arrive. I still have that 5200 packed away in my basement along with my other video game systems, including our 2600 which they bought for us in 1980.
Wow. A collection done just right. My first thought when I saw this collection on the web was "What's the point to release this with Atari Flashback 1&2 just released" Looks like a lovely love letter rather than a rom pack.
This has a super amount of games included! And the history and info is an excellent addition as well! (Not to mention its great value, and modern versions are a bit easier to connect to a streaming or recording device!)
I'd just expected a collection of games, which would've been 'cute to own'. But the documentary and museum aspects make this a lot more appealing to me.
I grew up as a kid in the '70s and after playing this for a bit, one thing is for certain a lot of love went into this. Definitely worth every penny, I must have if you grew up in that era.
I just picked this up on Switch and I am stoked to have this collection of games on the go! I was excited for the Air World too, such a nice touch. Also, VCTR SCTR is an epic surprise title to be included!
Thanks for the great overview. I’m so glad they didn’t half ass this. It looks like some real time, effort, and thought went into it. I hope it sells well, because it comes across as a labor of love. A few strange game choices. They missed a golden opportunity in not including Space Dungeon for the 5200. Very little for 8-bit computers. They included some real trash for the Jaguar, but also arguably the two “must haves”: Tempest 2000 and Atari Karts. In all, seems like a fabulous release.
@John thanks for the wonderful video the steel book case is great well worth the extra $10 I'm so glad I bought one. TEMPEST 2000 is the reason I held on to my Jaguar so long Jeff Minter did an amazing job with this game I'm definitely a Minter fan. I really wish other companies would follow Atari's lead and come out with there own history compilations.
This looks amazing! I'm getting this for the Holiday season when folks come to visit we can re-live all the glory days. Would love to see and add-on for the Activision games for 2600. ...Did I see anything on Adventure for 2600? LOVE the reimagine Haunted House! Why has no one done a VR of Haunted House?
This is amazing!!! Young blood gamers today should take note and give this a try! Just like music, you have to give the past respect to appreciate today!
Trying to decide if I should buy this now, or if I'm going to wait and see if they plan on releasing expansion packs to add more Atari 8-bit games. Not that I'm complaining, mind you, that Caverns of Mars is finally getting some love.
I was born in 1982. My first console was the Atari 2600 that my grandmother gave me. The first game that I played on that Atari was "Pitfall" then on 1993 I saw the awesome SNES and couldn't get back into Atari. Yet this compilation of Atari games are an awesome historical archive of gaming from the past. Will definitely buy it.
I am looking forward to this, because this is interactive history. The last time I played some of the classic Atari arcade games on PC (when Atari was briefly acquired by Hasbro) was back in the early 2000s. That compilation ended up infecting my HP desktop computer. A better experience with Atari (Interactive) was when I played the Matrix movie license games, although I preferred Path of Neo over Enter the Matrix.
John Hancock is 110% correct on this compilation!!!!! I baught it about a week ago, and it's fabulous, especially for us old timers that were there back in the day. To see these old friends back, is amazing! I definitely recommend this Atari 50 anniversary!!!!!
Wow really awesome! I was on the fence, but not anymore, it's not like I don't already have other atari game collections, but this one has some great items, really want to try haunted house in 3D, love the history videos.
A lot of missed games especially on 7800 like Tower Toppler (Nebulous) , Cross bow , pole position 2 and Midnight Murants. With that said I’m 100% getting this . One of my favorites Food Fight is there and I never experienced the Jaguar outside of Alien vs Predator. Add in all the historical videos and slide shows count me in . Good stuff
John, amazing video. One of your best. And this compilation looks great. I ordered the physical version a month or so ago but for some reason by estimated delivery date from Amazon isn't until 11/30. :(
I've bought this collection Friday on Good Old Games for my Windows gaming laptop. I'm having a blast from the past playing the games. Sadly no Activision games such as River Raid etc. But I guess that's a licensing issue. I love the extra background information videos and pictures. It really adds to the package as a whole. And it makes the collection look like a work of art. I highly recommend getting a copy of it.
Just WoW !! After seeing your excellent preview of this game I think it will be a must get for me now. I only wish they had my all time favorite game Xenophobe for the Lynx
Oh wow, the extra content in this thing is pretty amazing. I’m going to pick this up for sure.

Cool. Wish they would release a physical compilation for the Recharged games similar to this one. Been playing the hell out them on PS5.
I had a 2600. It was revolutionary at that time. Can’t really express how exciting and fun it was, but have very fond memories of this console.
I’ll never forget the first time I saw Klax on the Lynx. I never liked “puzzle” games before that. And to see it in colour? Wow!
I will be buying this before too long if only for the level of detail on offer. The other content is just a bonus. Love your channel.
Thank you for making this video. I remember playing Warlords for hours with my brother back in the early 80's...man, those paddles🙂lots of great memories, I'm picking this up for sure.
I will absolutely pick this up on Nintendo switch 🎮🏆
Atari 2600 was my first experience with home gaming
This is a love letter for those 40 and older
of course the younger folks can enjoy . But for us old people (43) this is an awesome time machine if nostalgia
Wow! Being an Atari fan, sounds like I gotta pick this up!!! Thanks John!
Just loved the vintage stuff included in this, also indoors company gossips told by staff.
Awesome review.
Digital Eclipse always do a fantastic job. Will definitely buy.
My first thought when I saw this collection on the web was "What's the point to release this with Atari Flashback 1&2 just released"
Looks like a lovely love letter rather than a rom pack.
Having Jag and Lynx games on it is a reason to pick this up.
Great video John, love all the extra stuff Digital Eclipse has included in there.
The actual belated Airworld has me particularly excited. A "second wind" as it were XD
Thanks. It looks very well done, even though I've played a LOT of Atari over my life, I need to pick this up on PS4.
This looks incredible! Definitely buying it.
This has a super amount of games included! And the history and info is an excellent addition as well! (Not to mention its great value, and modern versions are a bit easier to connect to a streaming or recording device!)
Glad you enjoyed!
I'd just expected a collection of games, which would've been 'cute to own'. But the documentary and museum aspects make this a lot more appealing to me.
I'm really impressed with Digital Eclipse, they've come a long way.
I grew up as a kid in the '70s and after playing this for a bit, one thing is for certain a lot of love went into this. Definitely worth every penny, I must have if you grew up in that era.
For me this is so worth the money. I love I Robot and Food Fight. Thanks for the review, John.
Like an interactive museum. This sure makes up for Atari Mania. Was really looking forward to that and it wasn't what I'd hoped
I just picked this up on Switch and I am stoked to have this collection of games on the go! I was excited for the Air World too, such a nice touch. Also, VCTR SCTR is an epic surprise title to be included!
Same here!
😻 I'm interested in this collection, I love when collections included videos/behind the scenes content 💙
I didn’t grow up with Atari (too young) but interested in this.
Great review. I need this in my collection.
Trying to decide if I should buy this now, or if I'm going to wait and see if they plan on releasing expansion packs to add more Atari 8-bit games. Not that I'm complaining, mind you, that Caverns of Mars is finally getting some love.
Came here to basically say the same thing @Some Guy wrote. If Sega put the same passion into a project like this it would be a MUST have.
There is so much awesome content on Atari 50, from the interactive rich history to all of the playable games, I am enjoying it week after week!
Good stuff
Great review. I went right out and bought it. Long live Atari
Right on!
worth it for tempest 2000 alone, then the jaguar collection and the new/unreleased games! Ps5 digital and switch steel tin purchased!
John, amazing video. One of your best. And this compilation looks great. I ordered the physical version a month or so ago but for some reason by estimated delivery date from Amazon isn't until 11/30. :(
Thank you, I felt good doing this one.
its like a museum for your switch
I know graphics weren't a thing playing these games but I use to choose my games based on the box art. The art really captured my attention.
Don't know why it would be a licensing issue. Many Activision games have been featured on Atari Flashback consoles and game collections
Just WoW !! After seeing your excellent preview of this game I think it will be a must get for me now. I only wish they had my all time favorite game Xenophobe for the Lynx
Amazing extras. Love the history of pong artwork and interviews.
