Katherine Beers In August 1965, I was (almost) 10 years old, and if ANYONE offered me Beatles tickets then I would turn them down and say, "Give them to someone who would really appreciate them." Classical music has already seized and FOREVER grabbed my soul a few years before I even heard one speck of the Beatles. Yes, I like them and I will always like them and their music, but I will tolerate them just so much...

Lennon said afterwards that they were getting hoarse from trying to sing over the 55,000 other crazy girls.... so they started lip syncing……. at one point my BFF says to me.." just think..we're breathing the same air as THE BEATLES'!!...we still laugh over that one.!!!!!!We graduated high school in 1968 and burnt our bras in 1969.....my daughter always tells me she wishes she grew up in my era. I was there! I was about 15 and went with friends. It was a weekend when they performed, and the anticipation was really something else. Tickets were about 5 dollars each, I think? We sat at the "nosebleed" section, and a few minutes later we just went down there near the netting .The security only cared about fans trying to get past them, so they didn't do anything to us. The screams were deafening. Not one sound they made could you hear, but what would you expect with a stadium filled with over 55000 teen fans?

The story of The Beatles is incredible. They were just 4 working class boys from Liverpool, yet conquered the world of music, and pop culture to the extent that it's still felt to this day. The power these guys had could have easily been abused. I think McCartney said it best by making the point that most of their songs were about love instead of "go on kids, tell your parents to sod off". At the very least, everyone should respect them just because of that.

It was actually in 1964 when they started sounding bad. Even Lennon admitted so. Their amps and PA was more than adequate in the small clubs where they sounded their best. Take those same amps along with using a stadium's PA system, the sound of screaming kids and the music became horrific. It was one of the reasons they stopped touring.

The most amazing positive true story of 20th century really. Think about it : Four leather-clad teenagers in the Summer of 1960 are playing basic three-chord Rock & Roll to a small audience of sailors, prostitutes, and street urchins in Hamburg Germany. In a few years, they are the biggest live act in the world. Then, they spend their last three year as the biggest, most influential recording artists in the world - leaving behind a song catalogue and discography that no one can touch to this day. They took their fans from screaming to tripping. Hard to believe it all really happened. We desperately need them still.

My grandad worked NYPD and his precinct was up near Shea Stadium. He assumed it would be a handy detail so volunteered for it. Now he was a seasoned cop bare in mind but after 40 years service, multiple homicides, car wreckage, rapes etc. he told me on his death bed that Shea stadium was the worst experience of his life. And that included a stint in Korea.

My sister and I were fighting over the TV channel -- and while fighting -- “I want to Hold Your Hand” came on the radio from another room. We heard it and we both stopped dead in our 11 yr old tracks and said at the same time “WHO is THAT ? Then we ran into the room with the radio and waited to hear who they were. There will NEVER be another Beatles or anything that can come close.

There's no deny how tight they were as a band because when you listen to the version of "Help" at Shea, it's utterly amazing how great they sound despite not being able to hear anything. Their harmonies were as perfect as any studio cut. I think that's the one thing that gets forgotten within their staggering fame- that they were above all else, a great band.

At 0:19 you can see a police officer covering his ears in pain. The screaming must have been unbearable.

I like Ringo at the 1:52 mark gulping, saying "Holy shit, WTF?" to himself. It must have been mind blowing, nobody ever played to that many people before.

This concert happened 54 years before I was born. I was born to be a Beatles fan.

Hard to appreciate today what the Beatles represented to their audiences. To see them in the flesh was like a religious experience. Although the screams drowned out the music, what was most important to their fans was to actually SEE them.

You are 100% correct. I don’t remember hearing them but I do remember seeing them and that was more important. Seeing them live.

I was there 16 years old. It’s a blur even today. I remember Twist and Shout but the screams were so loud! I remember some people trying to run to the stage. Police stopped them. John Lennon booed the police and almost started a riot.
    Something I’ll never forget!
