  • Adjusting valve clearances on a Desmoquattro. I show only the vertical inlet, as that's the only one you have any hope of filming with the engine in the bike. I also ramble on about rockers and the flaking, show what I do to the collets and talk about shims. And make a mistake, get some agro, and then the camera dies before it's done. All good fun.

Hi Brad, I'm new to your channel, I'm a retired GE aviation mechanical engineer and am now preparing to adjust the valve clearances on my 1998 Ducati 916SPS. I am looking for the proper clearances to set my valves at, my period service manual and the latest period service bulletins have the intake openers and closers at 0.16-0.18mm while the exhaust openers at 0.21-0.23 and closers at 0.11-0.13mm. Most of the values I've read and seen have the closers much closer than my period Ducati specs,. My question, is there some sort of "Come to Jesus" change in values I should be using. I appreciate your video, it showed me new approach from my loaded-unloaded method. If you have a moment, can you point me in the right direction, Thank You.

      in mm, i use 0.07 - 0.10 inlet closing, 0.10 - 0.13 inlet opening, 0.05 - 0.07 exhaust closing, 0.15 - 0.17 exhaust opening.
      in thou, that's 3 - 4 inlet closing, 4 -5 inlet opening, 2 - 3 exhaust closing, 6 - 7 exhaust opening.
i aim for the tight end on closing. if i have a situation where i feel there might be some binding at any point, i increase the opening clearance. not something i've really found on desmoquattro though

Hi Brad. Thanks for your videos! They are great.
I have 2003 monster 800. I took a long ride like 300 miles one day and ever since I came back I’m having issues with starting up the bike.
So I cleaned the body throttle, position sensor, spark plugs.
I made this tube filled with motor oil home made gage to see is my bike is sync.
Ever since I could not have it run smooth.
If the bike sit for a few days I have to play with the cable spring hosing that connect to the body throttle with my finger for a few min to have it start.. but when it’s starts is not running well and I feel like it’s running rich. Because the when I rave the bike it’s slowly goes down.
Also when the bike is warm I can turn it off and turn it back on right a way.. no problem.
    What do you think?

i'd go through the tune set up - idle mixture is a very important part of that. maybe valve clearances too - loose closers can cause issue.

@@bradthebikeboy I always said I like a challenge. But I'm used to the Japanese inline 4 type of challenge.
Have you any general advice about getting started in the Ducati world? They seem amazing machines for those prepared for them

@@Paradox0182 it's just a motorcycle, it should be expected to behave as a motorcycle. don't buy into the typical "temperamental italian mistress" bullshit some blokes just love. spend the money to do things properly, or just don't bother.

@@bradthebikeboy Yes I had perceived a bit of mystique which is often nonsense in disguise. Thanks for keeping it real, I'll try not to be deterred by not being familiar
