    This is my very favorite performance of this piece on guitar. Your tone, tempo and approach just stunning.

    I've been obsessed with this piece for years and years. I'm going to learn classical guitar for perhaps no other reason than to play this. This is the best performance of this piece I have ever heard. Well done.

      Years ago, before the internet, I used to go to the public library and photocopy sheet music. I was trying to teach myself classical guitar and back then there were few resources to do this.One of the pieces was this one, Bach 1001. I am not trained to sight read, so I plodded through it slowly. Eventually, I got to the point where I could play it somewhat. I had a blast with this and other pieces. But... I had never heard it! It seems strange now, but back then it would have been a bit of work to go to the record store, shop, and buy. Then, I was watching a movie called "Next Stop, Greenwich Village". In one of the scenes I heard something strangely familiar about the background music. I finally figured out it was the Bach fugue! It sounded NOTHING like my rendition. I barely recognized it in fact. Fast forward to now and it thrills me to hear it played so well.

      Does anyone know what instrument this piece was originally written for?

    • @joolz-hearall1p126

      As it's a fugue, is there a prelude?

    • @embouerv1298
      @embouerv1298 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joolz-hearall1p126 Bach made own versions for violin and organ(maybe lute too, im not sure, bwv 1000). This BWV is Part of bachs first violin sonata, BWV 1001 and there is no prelude, since sonata-form rarely contains one. But organ version, BWV 539 actually is in prelude-fugue form, so check out D-minor prelude for this fugue!

    Very neat, sublime play but your guitar is gorgeous too. It's sure loud, expressive but at the same time has a well balanced singing tenor tone with a good sustain and has an exceptionally brilliant sound for a (seemingly) cedar top. Normally I'm not a fan of lattice guitars because of their loud but colorless, nasal sound, but yours seemed to be an exception, I noted your luthier.

    You are one of the two best performer for BWV 1001 Fugue!
    The other one is Lana Trotovsek - J.S.BACH: Fugue from Violin Sonata in G minor

    • @RmDIrSudoSu
      @RmDIrSudoSu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should listen to Arthur Grumiaux interpretation of this piece. ^^ Or David Olstrak (I don't remembre if he did a record of this Sonata, A. Grumiaux did all the sonatas and partitas). When I play this piece or any sonata or partita for solo violin I usualy listen to Grumiaux's recording to see how he did. But with both my parents playing the violin professionaly I'm getting use to ear that kind of interpretation. ^^ Lana Trotovsek did a really good job, but it's a bit too romantic for me, but it's personal taste. I know that some people do prefer some more romantic interpretation.
      You can also check Josef Suk interpretation of BWV 1001.

    If you've got the time and I understand your time is valuable, could you please tell me the name of the guitar you are using. One of your colleagues seems to use one of the same brand and I'm interested in who makes them and where they come from? Many thanks in advance. Mark from Australia. Btw I believe we shared time at Sydney Conservatorium studying under Gregory Pickler, though that was many years ago. I have fond memories of those days. Also you played this fugue very well indeed. You've come a long way. Well done.

    • @Skinny_Karlos
      @Skinny_Karlos ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SimonPowis I was there, at the con, in the early 1990s. I've heard great things about Paul Sheridan guitars and, under your fingers, yours sounds great even via TH-cam.
      I'm still using an old (1971 old) Jose Ramirez which still sounds lovely.
      I'll keep expecting great things from your channel which continues to excite.

    i really like the performance. but there is something i dont understand. its at 2:50 . the finger technique looks really elegant there but i dont know how he does it. if you listen to the part around 2:50 (quite difficult to play for me) and look at his left hand there is something strange. if you stop the video at 2:50 you can definitly hear him playing a '#c' but i cant see where he plays it on the guitar... at this point you just have the opportunity to play the '#c' at the e-string 9th fret or maaaybe b-string 14th fret (very unlikely). but i cant see his fingers there because they are nearly all at the 12th fret. Am i wrong?????
    i need some Answers

  • @filipdinevmusic
    @filipdinevmusic 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi there, I need some help. I am a jazz guitar player, without classical background and I am working on this piece. Should I always alter the right hand fingers, without playing more continous notes with the same finger? What are the general rules of right hand you are following? Everyone feel free to comment.
    Thanks, beautiful playing.

    • @bogaiason613
      @bogaiason613 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      On one hand, the rule of thumb is to alternate as much as possible. The players with the greatest facility are the ones who can consistently alternate right hand fingers, even in awkward string crossings. Just like alternate flat picking. Similarly, arpeggios are played with one right hand finger dedicated to each note of the chord, with alterations worked out for more complex figures. On the other hand, many of us toss all that out the window and do what we can with what we've got. :-) As long as you get the notes right, only the hardcore snobs will care if you're "doing it wrong."

    • @markmelman615
      @markmelman615 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Filip Dinev Alternate fingers as long as it makes playing easier for you. (This'll help your right hand n
      stay more relaxed.) Generally you would only repeat one finger if you're trying to keep a more consistent tone, or if alternating is harder than not alternating.
