When I was younger, I wished Brooke gave him another chance. Now I'm 36 and I've been in her shoes. Sometimes you pour your whole heart into someone and they still don't "get it" until it's too late. Gary is saying all the right things, but I doubt he would follow through with his promises in the long term.

Maybe he would, maybe he wouldn’t. But the point is, Brook couldn’t know and, justifiably, wasn’t willing to take the leap again. Still felt bad for Gary, but sometimes you need that realization. So you can learn for future relationships.

I think he would As the scene continues, he doesn't try to beg and plead for her to give him another chance. Instead, he accepts defeat with grace and dignity. And when he kisses her, it's not done in an attempt to rekindle her feelings for him, but more as a farewell and a thank you for all the great times they did have together. He knew that her mind was made up in regards to their relationship and that that there was nothing he could say or do to undo the damage.

@Han Solo burger but that's the whole point of being together. It's not all about you, it's about the other person just as much. It's impossible to be a happy, supportive couple and only do things one of you wants to do. Sometimes you have to do something you don't like simply to make your partner happy. And it's not because they told you to, not because you're being forced to. It's because you love them enough to choose their happiness over your own for one evening a month. That's not asking a lot. Women tend to make this kind of sacrifice without even thinking about it, which is what she had been doing. But he wasn't, and not only that, but when she did ask him for support, he would come up with every excuse just so he didn't have to do anything that made him the slightest bit unhappy. That's where he failed her and lost her.

I want you to be in MY life. I can’t live without you. I will sacrifice doing things I like because I want you back in MY life.” Alignment and principle is what makes a good relationship. It's crazy how men here believe the woman was wrong. He practically behaves like a teenager that needs orders from his mother.
This is not his mother. Is his partner.
She stated every single time what she wanted from him, what she needed. They both worked, and still she was the one coming home and doing all the work for him like she actually was his mother.
And men still get the "say how you feel" card out.
    SERIOUSLY?
HAVE YOU EVEN SEEN THE MOVIE?

Women leave when they finally accept the fact that the person they have tried so hard to fix, is never going to come around. Women go to extreme lengths to stay in a relationship. But once a woman is done, she is done. Women do not lack options. They may lack self-confidence and self validation, which is why they stick with even the worst kind until all their motherly instinct dries up. So when a woman gives up one you, you're never getting another chance. Why? Because she's already given you enough chances.

Men like this just tell you what you want to hear without them being genuine, they just realize that once they are affected, they’ll do this for about a week or two to bring you back in and then it’s back to the same old shitshow. If someone wanted to change and make the relationship better, they would without needing more than 2-3 chances tops. And don’t say women don’t communicate. Women usually keep on giving love, chances (sometimes undeserved), they compromise, they even try to take the bad behaviour explaining themselves that perhaps it wasn't so disagreeable after all. Finally, it is too late and the damage is already done, then nothing works. By that time, women get completely exhausted and they have nothing more to give. Sad indeed.

People still don’t like him because too many people have been through this. They’ve hit this point … received the apology… tried again… and watched their partner revert back to being the exact same person.
The reality is Gary’s personality has an innate selfishness to it. Agreeing to go to a concert and then not showing up or calling/texting is something a mature adult doesn’t do - to anyone.
The odds of him genuinely changing overnight and becoming a good partner are slim. People like him can rally for a few months but eventually they’ll tire and go back to their old selves.

She missed the red flags of immaturity at the beginning, she got what he could give.

So true! We like to ignore it at the beginning! Because we think we could change him, and be his hero. Just to find out, it's a bad ending for both!

When he said he will never hurt her again. That's just sugar coating. As a man don't make such promises. He just shows that he is so used to lying and dishonest to himself.

Relationships are about convenience. Nothing more. No one loves anyone. Life is cheap, and then you die.

Even after what he’s just said to her….he wouldn’t follow thru. He just wants his pain to go away and he can’t understand why seeing her hurt hurts him.
I gave you the whole kitchen sink of my life and you couldn’t even help me with the dishes

I remember feeling sad that Brooke didn't give Gary another chance when this movie first came out, but now I get it. Brooke was completely drained from putting all the effort into her one-sided relationship. Gary, although very well-intentioned here, was too late. In the end, the break up seemed to be good for him too as he seemed to have matured a ton when they bumped into each other in the final scene.

As a 40year old, I see this so differently now. When I was 20 something, I thought why can't they just figure it out? Dial back in and be better/stronger together..
Yes, he took her for granted.. yes, he figured it out too late. But the general premise of this movie is largely told from a woman's point of view. There's frankly more to the story.
She could have been more up front, and discussed what she wanted from him prior to it becoming unfixable. Then all the games and trickery that ensues after the break up where the woman is hoping the man steps up and figures it out, eventually becoming what she always wanted in her partner all along..
Men can't read women's minds.. and women struggle to be direct with what they want, and will often mentally check out before physically ending it.
It would be great to redo this movie, and add in the effects of social media, dating apps and the now unlimited optionality presented to modern women. Tell the story from the man's perspective as he watches his woman succumb to the endless amounts of attention garnered through the internet and several generations of weak and Godless men.

Oh god the hand gestures. It feels like he rehearsed to say every right thing and it bothered me how much manipulation there is in this. Him love bombing her but you know for a fact that nothing would change right after. Gives me the ikkk.
