Amazing that Ligature Marks almost didn't make the record and it's the one they used in the very first announcement teaser. Also love to hear Tomas's praise of Mårten and his desire to see him appreciated. There's not one member who doesn't pull their weight in the band but Mårten is certainly an underrated component.
As an avid fan, I find it strange that Mårten doesn’t get the praise he very clearly deserves. He’s the mastermind behind so many of their iconic music and I’m sure he also has a buttload of music he’s not presented to the band, especially the more atmospheric stuff like intro to TMB, Last Vigil etc. I’m here for a solo record, Mårten!!
This is a superb interview. Very professionally done. You clearly know your stuff and did your research. Your questioning is perfectly executed. Ask an incisive question, then stop talking. You don’t feed the guest possible answers to the question that you asked, and you stay quiet and allow the guest to talk. It’s a sadly rare skill, but it makes this interview entertaining from beginning to end, and you drew out new information that I didn’t even know as a 20+ year fan of the band.
Also, i have to point out: did anyone else notice that Thomas used the slang term “youngin’?” I’ve never heard anyone outside the southern US use that term - certainly not a Swede!
Matt that is awesome you noticed, thx so much. I’ve been focusing on that part of it lately and I think to your point, the result is polished. I’ve listened to some interviews, and I mentioned it in not so many words to Tomas, where the interviewer keeps inserting themselves into his responses and it’s ridiculous. That so called journos have even conducted an interview without listening to the album properly is nuts. And yes, I had an advance copy but they’re not hard to get hold of if you’re serious about your craft as a host. I’ll admit I’ve done interviews where I listen back and think, that’s not my best. But the way some interviewers make it all about them is crazy. It’s a horrible listening experience for the audience. Thx again mate! 🙏
Easily one of the best interviews I’ve encountered, and not just because it’s with my favorite musician (Tomas) from my favorite band (Meshuggah). Andrew knows what he’s talking about and does a great job of constructing questions that are worth asking. It’s a refreshing departure from what we (as Meshuggah fans) usually see, which are interviews done by those with little more than a casual interest in the band - and what Meshuggah means to so many of us.

And today after 20 plus Years I finally confirm from THY man Himself, that there was Definitively PANTERA influence in your Core as a band. My life is finally complete and I can Die now Peacefully. Absolutely excellent interview, it's always lovely to hear from Tomas. I'd definitely read a Meshuggah book.
I didn't have time yet to fully enjoy the new album, but I got completely hooked on Ligature Marks as soon as I heard it, and it was cool to know a little bit more about the story behind it.
Looking forward to seeing Meshuggah live for the first time this summer.

Ligature mark is real good and the more I listen to the album, the more Armies of The Preposterous becomes the banger.
I've been to several Meshuggah shows before, and Tomas Haake is nothing short of incredible. The guy's technique and dedication to his craft are bar none considering the difficulty of the drum parts for Meshuggah songs even in his own words are "no joke"
I think Fred going on hiatus has been a good opportunity for fans to come to understand the writing and contribution of Mårten much better. There is a lot of mystique and mythology about Fred’s playing and writing - we all know he’s a genius, but fans tend to fixate on him (self included) to the detriment of recognising the reality, that Fred hasn’t really written for the band since Obzen and that Mårten and Tomas are the primary architects of the modern Meshuggah sound. I know I’ve come to a newfound appreciation and respect for Mårten and I wish I’d known earlier as a lifelong fan. I do hope one day Fred may contribute more actively but clearly the band do not rely on that being the case. Perhaps we will see Special Defects 2 one day.

This guy is one my musical heroes, yet he thinks himself as "just a drummer who got lucky".
I have been listening to meshuggah since i was like 15 or 16 when obzen came out. I have always respected them because of my love of extended range and down tuning. This new album finally made them click foe me and they are my favorite band now. I do reqlly enjoy silent sleep of reason the most rn but immutable is such an important record for me.
I went back and looked at all the writing credits for Meshuggah’s albums and realised that I don’t enjoy their music as much as I did when Fredrik was more involved in the songwriting.
His absence on pretty much everything after ObZen is apparent and although I still love Meshuggah, I truly miss what Fredrik brought to their sound.
Not taking anything away from Marten, he’s absolutely amazing, but without Fredrik involved it’s just not the same for me.

Great interview. I'd never heard anyone ask any of the members how they stay so humble, it was interesting to hear about the influence of the Swedish culture, it's so opposite of American culture. I'd definitely read a Thomas Haake bio, I hope he takes that suggestion seriously.
I also love how you can see the sun rise outside. The video starts while completely dark outside and ends with the fence being overexposed from the sunlight

As soon as he said holy moses I thought back to contradictions collapse and I can super hear it.
I missed the whole album release cycle and press etc but was there for violent sleep of reason so I wanted to find out how the band views this one differently and my question is already being answered about 3 minutes in. thank you very much 👍
Light the shortening fuse is my favorite but I'm happy to hear Ligature Marks made the cut. Definitely on repeat. Also interesting to hear about things like label loyalty what not. We all experience these relationships in the working world

Guessing by the new metal bands coming out of the US vs Australia, Meshuggah falls way closer in line with what is being played in Australia.
Honestly i believe that other than Dick, all of the others are very recognizeable. I mean Jens alone is the face of djent, both Mårten and Fred are what many guitarists, myself included aspire to be. And Thomas is someone who i believe is the best Drummer in the world. I cant say for sure if dick is who Fred is to guitarists, for bassists. But it really is a band where mostly every member is heavily known.
First of all... stop using the word djent.. is ridiculous. Atleast in terms of Meshuggah. They are experimental progressive mathematic tech-death.
Second of all, i believe Dick is one hell of a bassist for other bassists. I mean it he slaps hard and he plays the rythms ;)

@@massivesponge9720 as a Meshuggah fan, they are not djent. But that doesnt change that Jens has the copyrighted “djent face”. And i dont even listen to djent, the only bands with 8 strings ir more i listen to are meshuggah and a very little animals as leaders. And the doom ost of course
@@massivesponge9720 Dick is absolutely amazing, but if its about facial rcognition, his isnt nearly as spread around as the others. Especially in the newest album, Dick knocks it out the park.
