You’re not likely going to get an uncertified mechanic making $18/hr doing the work in a reputable Toyota Dealership. That’s why they charge $200 + dollars/hr labour. If I found out an uncertified mechanic worked on my car, I would probably lose my sh*t.

I purchased extended factory warranty on top of factory warranty for 100K with extra 425.00 when the car was new, when I first claim it at 118 miles during the snow storm for wiper failure, it was denial for act of God! I filed another claims 6 months later for power surge that destroy all light bulbs, it also was denial for act of God. Third claims for oil leak from cylinder heads when the car has 70K Zstill under 100K) cost me $900.00 it was denial due to lacks of dealer maintenance record per owner manual! The car have to park for months at the dealer and waiting for adjuster to fry from Russia for evaluation.

At 28k miles the water pump sprayed some coolant out on my 2019 Toyota C-HR. I do 3k mile oil changes on it and inspect everything at those times. I smelled coolant a couple times before my oil change and checked things out, but didnt find anything, a few hundred miles later I did my oil change and found a crusty pink spray pattern coming from the water pump. I took it in to have it warrantied and they sounded like they didnt want to do it because something like that was "normal". I was ready to raise hell, but didnt show it, and when they came back to give me the final say on it they told me some reps were in town and said to do it as a "good will repair".
After the job was done I got the car home and inspected the work, everything looked ok, the work didnt look too sloppy. I could see every bolt they touched, but it was done and working. Everything was clean, they washed the coolant off of things and dried it off, so they did a decent job. I usually dont like anyone else touching my vehicle either, but if you have the warranty then use the warranty as long as you can. They built it, you bought it, they warranty it, now make them honor it. Thats how I look at it anyway.

Took my brand new 2023 Lexus GX 460 in for Lexus free 10k maintenance. I got about 7,200 miles and already did two oil changes myself. One break-in at 850 miles and second @ 3200 miles. The mechanic not only overfilled about a quart of oil but did not install the undercover skid plate 12 MM bolt. Took it back to the dealer to fix and they blame it on me saying it broke off or loose! They put back a smaller bolt. I went on Lexus website and order the right size bolt for $1.45 plus $5 shipping. I am pissed they did a crappy job. My fears of bringing it to the dealer is the tech sloppy work or rushing it through. This is not the first time where they don’t put back bolts, clips or completely not servicing to specs. Also while in for service the service supervisor took my GX out for a ride and put on 32 miles! It can’t be a test drive. I was able to track the car through Lexus app.The GX needs 8.2 qts of oil not 9. I do all my cars maintenance. So my recommendation is if you can do a better job, just buy the OEM parts and do it yourself! For me I took advantage of Lexus complimentary FREE maintenance but regretted since.

There is the risk of something going wrong doing it at home yourself, not a big risk, but a risk no less. Clips from something you take off getting to the valve cover can break, wires get pulled out of fittings etc Then you have the cost of parts which is not much for a gasket, but again depending on what has to be removed to get to it, many times they need new gaskets as well, like throttle body etc. Let the dealer deal with it I say

Research the dealers you don’t have to go to the dealer you bought that vehicle from go to the one that has the best service record and the highest rated that you can find. Very odd to see oil seepage that early. Either way I highly recommend if you are not running 5w-30 oil now to switch. I run 5w-30 along with all my family members with newer model Toyota's. The 0w-20 weight EPA forced oil is garbage.

I'd guess that the dealer will crank down on the valve cover bolts before replacing the gasket. If that's their solution, then your decision is pretty easy; do it yourself.
However, if it's not the gasket that's leaking, and instead it's casting porosity, then warranty work will be the only way that Toyota will touch it after the gasket change.

valve cover leak? some sort of top end leak.
looks like an easy fix, would take about as much time and effort to fix it as it did to make this video if it didn't have the high pressure fuel pump in the way.
as somebody said "just try tightening the bolt" ... you could check to see if that bolt was torqued to spec (could probably feel if it was loose even without a torque wrench)
thanks for breaking it in for us used car buyers who know these things run just as good when they are 10 years old and half off msrp

It seems that just about every business and every industry is on the same MO , ie they are getting rid of their skilled , highest paid employees and replacing them with high school kids and other unskilled help and paying them minimum wages. And the result is high attrition for them and bad and unreliable help for the customers. So, to answer your question, you are taking your chances when you take your car anywhere for repair but your car is under warranty and perhaps it's worth taking a chance. If it were out of warranty, I would not take it to them.

They tried to deny warranty on things as simple as driving over 85 MPH with a GR owner. Toyota come up with every excuse under the sun for why my 2020 Camry was such a piece of junk. It was easier to dump the car to a dealer. I felt guilty considering selling it to a private party so I took the loss and dumped it on a dealer and bought a buddies 10 year old Ford to replace it.

They moved production to Mexico and wondered why their quality control is bad. My 2019 honda Ridgeline has engine recall because of rod bearing failures. I know my engine is failing because an oil change filter was full of big metal particles. Two companies known for their quality and today junk.
Rod bearing is one of the cheapest parts of the engine and uses cheap materials.
