Looking again at Susan Sontag's book 'Illness as Metaphor' it strikes me the she would not be entirely happy with the use I make of her analysis in this video. She certainly thinks metaphors that figure illness as war are very problematic. But she also thinks that there are problems with figuring illness in terms of a 'rebellion of the ecosphere.' There is once again the danger of moralising our experience of illness- to think that we only become ill because we have created a 'wicked technocratic world'. (see. Penguin edition pages 70-72) We should try to acknowledge, according to Sontag, that there is no overall moral meaning to human illness and vulnerability more generally. I thought it worth pointing this out in case anyone still watches this 🙂-- The point is important, although I still think we can see some ethical meaning in many of the illnesses we endure, even as we are careful to avoid victim blaming or the idea that an ideal human life would be invulnerable.

I watched a documentary about the blitz last night and there seems to be a lot of similarities of how the govt treated the public during the blitz as to how theyve treated us during the pandemic. We was at war for a year before the bombing started... Its been a year now through the pandemic so got me thinking.. What's coming next?
