For all the people asking.. Eli was not trying to teach you how to create an internet site.. he was showing you how you could use Word to make the guts for the site. For those who are completely new to the idea of a website, there are a few basics you need to grasp. First, there are the parts of this process.. A domain name ... you know.. www.somethingichoseandpaidfor.com... then there is a web server.. that's the place where your website files live.. it contains software that allows it to be able to communicate over the web. Usually, you pay for web site hosting.. This means that the hosting provider (Name.com, 1&1.com, goDaddy.com...) is hosting your site on their web servers. They usually have their stuff in a data center somewhere and they deal with the hardware so you don't have to.. that's what your paying for. Next there is something called DNS.. Domain Name Services.. this is the magic that makes the internet work. Your website lives on a web server in a data-center hosted by a hosting provider... but how does it become available on the internet for Jo and Bob and Jill to visit and buy your widgets?.. well .. when you register your domain name.. that name is held by a registrar.. usually the people you purchased it from are registrars.. they are also often the hosting providers too.. but not always... anyway.. the registrar is licensed by ICAN to submit changes to the worlds DNS servers.. there are a bunch and they hold all the websites in the world.. ever.. for ever.. scarry huh.. dont worry.. there are some smart folks working on that part.. SO.. you may or may not know that computers on a network all have a unique identifier called and IP address. (If you really want to get into deep here.. look up MAC address too.. for now.. we'll stick with IP) IP Address stands for Internet Protocol Address.. commonly shortened to.. IP.. Why does this matter.. well.. computers talk via this IP addres.. and thus the Internet Talks via Ip addresses.. so to speak.. But humans talk via words.. and concepts.. so the DNS Servers hold the Names (Domain Name) that we can relate too.. and they translate it to a Number.. (IP)...
So.. what does all that mean?.. It means that when you buy your Domain name it has to be registered with a Registrar... at that time.. you have several "Records" that get labeled with your Domain Name and get registered to an IP address that your hosting provider assigned you.. There is some smoke and mirrors here.. but we can get into that later.. once your domain name has its DNS Mapped.. to an IP address.. then your files that are hosted on your hosting providers server are now available at that IP.. and because the DNS is mapped (worldwide) they are now available via the Domain name that you purchased. ... So.. when you make a web page in Word or any editor for that matter.. you upload it (Via FTP Client like he did in this video) and it now lives in your hosting providers web-server in a folder that they have set aside for you... within their web-server, they map your website to that folder... you name your files properly (index.htm) and bam.. your web page.. is now the landing point for your web site... and that .. is how it all works..

@jednakropka Make sure the formatting is actually correct. Word is a pain for screwing up the formatting. There is a button that looks like a backwards uppercase P with 2 legs that will show the formatting code. try that and see if it shows you what's going on.

I'd forgotten a few key elements so this was very good. I was selling (and starting to build) websites in Ottawa, in 1997. This video is pretty much exactly what we did then. In six months I sold one website, to a friend out of sympathy. He's retired but his company still has it, an original ".com" domain; bldgs.com. I have lisatec.com from those days still. It's under construction yet again, and why I'm here viewing these videos. Y2K came along and distracted our tiny company for about a year. After that, the bubble had burst.

Great video I built my website with Microsoft Word in 2008 without any knowledge.
When your web site is broadcast over cable TV and you don't have one I sit down done what it took it took me about an hour to create.
I keep getting contact from people wanting to refresh my website I was told my GoDaddy that my SEO is very strong with the way it was.
Any ideas or template recommendations would be great.

It is not easy to make a website in Word 2007 and later. The reason why is because frames are no longer behaving as they used to in Word 2002 and 2003 versions.

I already knew how to use MS Word to make a web site but I was hoping you would show how to insert html or xml coding (or at least how to access it so you can edit it). I am trying to apply a fixed background and copy and paste some audio files into the pages. I also wanted to put in the "rain effect" but I can't access the "source" or html (xml) coding to do it. You can't write simple html or xml in word??? Can you help me?

Is there a way to make a MS webpage as long as you want? I have increased the length of the word document as long as it allows me, but I need the website much longer. I am making a portfolio and I need to put a lot of pics in a grid pattern but I am only able to use MS Word so I'm kind of stuck.

1:15 You speak the truth. My friend opened her own lingerie business. She paid the web designer to design her website for 4000 US dollars (advance only, if the designer finishes it she needs to pay him 2nd payment). The web designer just gave her rough design but never finished it. He claimed he had personal tragedies (wtf?) and he needed to clear his head. A year later she was desperate enough to upload her website so she needs to hire the new designer.
I feel bad for her but I have no clues how to help my friend in need. Your tutorial gives me some clues.

@LitttlePersianBoy htm is short for html its the same thing. only thing is back in the old days they could only use the 3 letter extension for some reason but now it does not matter you can use both

I have just one short question as I built one page website your way. I have one problem as all my page aligns to the left. I wanted to change it to the centre but I could not. Even when everything appears in the centre (MS) when I am checking on the internet I still see on the left side. Do you know what am I doing wrong?

"suffix"? I've never heard the word used as computer jargon. From my '90s, we called this the 8 dot 3 naming convention, wherein the 8 characters to the left were a bit/byte limitation in memory and the 3 characters to the right of the dot were the extension name, or type of extension.

The tag Any other nameyou want put it here . For example, if you want to rename contacts.htm/contacts.html as Contact Us you will do the following :
