The proof that they don't read your messages is in the "12 years old joke ban" story.
The lack of context of the conversation was the reason the person got banned. If the mods REALLY did read your messages, the ban wouldn't happen, as they would've realized it was satirical. The reason the ban happened is that somebody reported the joke message. And since they're sent the link to the message, it means they can scroll up and read other messages. They don't, though.
Also, discord doesn't keep deleted messages. If you take a link to a message and then delete the message, the link won't work.

      1. They’re competent

    • @GoodMorningUSA1
      @GoodMorningUSA1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +66

I thought the same. Before Discord, this stuff was done on Skype. Before that it was done on whatever various chat apps and online forums were popular at the time. The video is good and all, but it tries to create this scary atmosphere about how your safety is at stake if you use Discord. Your safety is at stake if you ise the internet to interact with any humans, period.
A little unrelated but personally, the only thing I've ever feared from social media would be my bank account or other important documents being compromosed. I'm an adult man, so I'm not at risk from being groomed online and I certainly don't meet any randos so I'm not gonna get killed. I don't beef with people in random servers, I mostly stay in few private ones with select online friends I've known for years before Discord, so I'm not really at risk of being doxxed and having someone put a hit on me. At worst, even if my private messages were to get publicly leaked somehow, it's like.. I have nothing to hide there. At most, sure, people I've talked trash about could find them and they'll might be pissed off at me... But that's really not so bad in the grand scheme of things. I don't send naughty photos of myself or say explicit things that could get me in legal trouble. I mean, sure, I have discussed naughty things... What could happen, me and my friends discussing our favorite porn videos could be leaked... And? Where's the threat in that to me? Maybe people who know me will read it and think I'm weird, but that's it.
The point of this little rant is that you pretty much choose yourself how "exposable" you want to be. Don't want to risk bad things about you being leaked?Don't publish bad things online.

I think this hugely exposes poor parenting and how the mindset of being online has changed. When I was growing up it was normal not to share any personal info online but now everyone wants to use their real names and post personal pictures etc. If parents monitored their kids it would help. And if people maintained at least a semi reasonable level of personal security and accountability it would also help.

I just want to put this out there. In Discord's TOS, they have a section stating that you can in no way sue Discord themselfs, if any of the personal data they collect on you gets leaked/breached onto the internet. Many developers thought that was pretty weird and self incriminating, but you can't change a companies policy. Also the section about doxxing, is going to be common on every platform.

You probably won't read this message, but I'll share the story on how I learned about Discord and furries
A year or two ago, I was in a server where someone named Coda was known for grooming minors, posting NSFW of real animals, and posted cub art, he himself being a 19 year old furry. I was a mod on the server at the time and Coda was not there, but he still had an effect on it. Someone who was a victim/ex-friend of Coda (named Yoshi) approached me and gave me his tag and proof of what he did. I added Coda and he said he never knew me, yet he gave me his PERSONAL Discord name. I talked to the mods and I decided to @ everyone with Coda's tag and told them to report him
In hindsight, it was a bad idea, as many people harassed and doxxed him. I say it was a bad idea because he reported me the next day, and he knew it was traced back to me
However, I also ignored a warning from someone who I assumed was joking, which went along the lines of this:
"Coda has a circle with the moderators of Discord. If he tells them, you're done for"
I had my account banned, with my email reading I had distrubuted/owned NSFW of minors
This makes no sense on so many levels. I never did this to begin with, Coda admitted to not knowing me (and our conversation was our only interaction), and there was proof from Yoshi and rumors from others that he had done the previous acts mentioned
What had happened turned out to be true. Coda (according to Yoshi) knew a handful (around 10) of Discord furry moderators via being a furry and possibly knowing of cub content. Coda had managed to get the moderators to ignore the truth about what he had done and managed to get me banned
After I rejoined the server, I told the server what happened. Although they had all fought back again, many gave up, knowing it was pointless as is
To this day, I believe Coda is still out there, and despite me sending all my proof to Discord's HQ, they went silent. This was the first time I've never gotten a response, as before, I've discussed unfair bans and issues, and I get even minimal responses such as simply telling me they read my report. When I told them about Coda KNOWING moderators, the HQ instantly stopped reading my emails and reports

I remember getting obsessed about using Discord and getting depressed for an entire day because I get warned or something.
It was after I got banned from some server for no reason that I finally realized how unhealthy my obsession was.
Since then I've started to take some steps back. I still use Discord daily, but now I exclusively only hang around in smaller communities and servers with some people I know well online. Social media is great when you, well, want to *social*ize, but if you get obsessed with it, then you're only going to go into a spiral of eventual... let's just say "shit".

@@dark-ghost5455 I've already seen you say this earlier so since I saw you say the same exact thing, I'm going to reply. No, but Discord is still a really good example to talk about social media and internet safety and how all of the social media platforms are terrible. Facebook, Instagram, even WhatsApp. They're all owned by Facebook and Facebook is scummy as hell and just got caught sending private messages to the government about a 17 year old and her mother talking about her abortion and now they're facing jail charges. These websites/social media and data mining is dangerous. It is free constant surviellance and that is bad all around.
Discord is still a great example of this fucked up process and the fact that End to End Encryption should damn well be the norm on websites all over the internet along with screenshot blocking and the option to have automatic disappearing messages. Privacy options need to be a thing because real everyday people are being massively taken advantage of by these mega rich corporations. Privacy has been listed as human right by United Nations themselves and America isn't respecting it just like America doesn't respect the fact that free healthcare is a basic human right, United Nations announced that during 1980s or something and most developed nations have some form of universal healthcare- except us.
This awareness helps people realize just how vulnerable they are online and what steps we CAN take to help reduce that. I love Discord's interface and their server option but their absolute refusal to E2EE especially after the shit the creator and the employees have pulled? No fucking way.

Not to mention, up until recently forums were a unique and important community space, typically not extensively monetised for huge profit, that have fallen (wrongly) by the wayside as big companies have monopolised notions of online community, often into less egalitarian spaces- think more.. influencer and followers, product and fans, instead of community member and equally important other community members. In the old internet it really wasn't the case that the first question was 'who/what is the product here'? Not trying to be all 'in my day' here, but, basically, the levels of monetisation as default we see here just simply weren't established yet back then. @dumb comment This first comment was originally very aggressive, so I'll let a more civilized version sit here. The original comment will be down below.
      new version:
Yes there is a culture being appropriated. There are multiple cultures, such as the Funny Animal culture, where characters such as Fox from Star Fox or Mickey Mouse from Disney come from. there are also other cultures that use animals with human characteristics, for example fables that were made long ago. Search up some fables, you'll find those pretty quickly. The definition you put is extremely vague. Animal characters with human characteristics is just a concept that anyone can like. Being an enthusiast for this concept does not make you a furry. The word "furry" as a connotation used to describe the *furry fandom* . If you use the internet (which you obviously do), you'll find fandoms. Fandoms are basically groups made by fans around certain things. Example: FNAF fandom, Undertale fandom. The name of these fandoms clearly have the said subject on it. " *FNAF* fandom", makes it a fandom of FNAF, not a fandom around fnaf fangames per say. Furry fandom is based of furries, not anthro animals or the concept itself. Furries, as in the fictional creations and characters within the fandom, are inspired by the subject, but are a diffrent culture. What OP has done is associate Mickey Mouse, which is from the *Funny Animal* culture, with the *furry* fandom, thus being cultural appropriation, as it is an inappropriate adoption of the Funny Animal culture.
The definiton of "furry", as in the connotation, should be "A person who directly associates themselves with the furry fandom and self proclaims as a part of it". Its more precise and less vague. "An enthusiast for animal characters with human characteristics" is SUPER VAGUE, and the reader might interpret it as their bias wishes. I would also make the definiton of furry fandom be: "A community made by people who are self proclaimed furries, where content made inside the community itself is shared". I hope these definitons are simple and direct. The google definiton itself is incorrect, but is so vague to the point of making the person think there is no cultural appropriation involved. But as I said, its vague, so people might interpret the "An enthusiast for animal characters with human characteristics" as literally all anthropomorfic animals, which is not true. This is a leading cause of the cultural appropriation that happens within and outside the fandom. The concept itself has existed since dawn of time, as you can see by the egyptian gods for example. I'm trying my best to separate the Furry Fandom from the concept itself, anthropomorphic animals and funny animals as a whole.
I would love to hear your point of view in this situation, because this problem is indeed complex. Bisases can ruin someones point of view, and these biases who are passed on as facts do more harm than good. Unfortunately, instances like these go further than just "furry or not", it can go and destroy peoples lives as fake news. This problem can sound insignificant, but its very harmful to anthropomorfic animal creators, as there are certain people who don't want to associate themselves with such a controvesial community like the furry fandom. People making up definitions and forcing biases down others throats dont help this situation at all. I can try to show more unbiased proof and try to explain myself better. Thanks if you read this in its entirety.
      Old ver:
yeah, no youre wrong. Furries are fan of furries. Anthros have nothing to do wth them. I know what furries are. You didnt even try to my argument on why bringing kids to furry conventions is a bad idea. Instead, you feast on lies and cultural appropriation. EVERY SINGLE TIME I COMMENT ABOUT FURRIES PEOPLE GO ON CALLING FUNNY ANIMALS FURRIES. You are aware of what is a funny animal, yet you compared them to furry culture. I'm in shock. the cultural appropriation and the misinformation is real. I dont want to sound like a snob, but you're wrong. FUrries and funny animals (basically almost every anthro animal) are two SEPARATE, DIFFRENT THINGS. Furries are a recent thing and funny animals have been existing since tales were a thing. I dont get it, why are you using biases to prove your point? Some furries may like anthros, but people are individuals. Furries are literally their own culture (do you see disney posting animation memes?) with their own characters. Pushing anthros into the furry culture is not only cultural appropriation, but you are tarnishing multiple famous characters AND CULTURES into this infamous internet community.
I f*cking give up. I know I cant really change ppls minds, but the cultural appropriation is real. If you mind, I hope you would remove the "furry are fans of anthro animals" part because not all furries are fans of anthro animals. They may just like the concept. You are mixing two different cultures and you contradicted yourself. Its like if you said that anime fans like western cartoons.
Sorry if this comment is rude, but please, dont commit this cultural appropriation. Its really harmfull to furries and funny animal fans. Hope my comment educated you a bit.

I got myself a girlfriend on discord and we’re even dead set on marrying each other and having kids. We spend a lot of time together (hours on end) but it has always been a joy to be with her. My girlfriend was the first person I can emotionally rely on and she’s very sweet unlike the vast majority of people I socially interact with in the real world but regardless of not finding any sort of love in the real world, I agree on the sentiment that it shouldn’t be an excuse to completely shun yourself from real life and spend all your days on discord. Completely relying on discord or any other social media platform can make you prone to attacks from hackers and such and there is one thing you can do to reduce the risk of getting attacked and that is by just going offline every once in a while.

discord is a very weird and unusual app, yeah it has its ways for helping communication but its so easy to fake being someone, not only that but its also an open source app meaning that people can create scripts to bypass certain things and all it takes is that one person that has nothing to do all day and then they could cause a very big problem, thank you for bringing light to these issues, hopefully one day something could be done about at least one of these problems if not all.

Never in my life have I felt as much fear as the day I was doxxed. I made friends with the wrong guy in high school, he had a rough childhood but a lot of it's exaggerated. The kid took everything a lot more seriously than he should and always had an irrational way of dealing with something. One week, he was ready to ask the girl that he likes if she would date him. As you can expect he got rejected but for two good reasons, she liked someone else, and she had only known him for a few weeks at that point. The rest of the week the guy acted like he was at a funeral. He told me he doesn't handle rejection well, that she was his world, and that she's why he was happy about going to school each day. I told the guy there is plenty of fish in the sea and that he's gotta learn to get back up when knocked down. The kid took it the wrong way I guess and started saying shit behind my back. He snapped when I got a staff member's attention after he told me and the girl he was planning to commit suicide. He started sending pictures of me with my bb guns to people as if they were real and that I had violent intentions. Along with that, he had the three officers show up at my house ready to arrest me. Honestly, it's good on that girl for rejecting him, she saved herself the hellish nightmare of a toxic relationship.

I decided "Why not play along?" so, I made a profile and posted my 'character' (literally just one I found online) in a furry server. I had received quite a few messages myself so I caved in and decided to chat with these people. One I'd found worked a day job and was 23, doing this type of stuff. Even at work, they ERPed with people online. It goes to show how an average person, living a ordinary life can be something like that behind closed doors. As of right now, I believe the server has been deleted.

it’s heavily annoying that discord has SO much power . I haven’t ever gotten discord.

i don't have any doubts that its more than 1 in 5 people who get creepy messages or unsolicited photos on discord and even other social medias. its a real problem, and it makes me so glad that there are people who catch predators and such and call attention to these things, because my whole life ive felt like i had to be silent about it. like, 'we dont talk about that.' its just the kind of trauma that even other traumatized people dont want to talk about

I’ve been using Discord for a few years now, and my awareness for doxxing has gone up. Even after ehehe the intro go part four, I got this sic, feeling in my stomach. Now, I’m relatively safe on the internet, I don’t usually enter Credit Card information into websites.
I usually only join private discord servers, due to them usually having a higher security threshold than others, but damn, it’s scary.

Not gonna lie, this is pretty "standard" stuff nowadays. Big corpo selling out their "investors" (customers) because they can, without having to fear backlash and that is the big issue here. It's not just particularly Discord being "bad", although they obviously could and should improve, but much more with people just not caring about things.
What would happen if we suddenly decided to dump Discord? The company would plummit and file bankruptcy within a month. But we don't because there just isn't much of an alternative, since almost everyone uses Discord so there's no point in switching to another platform that people barely use. The ending note of the video summed it up pretty good. Balance.
Whilst yes, we want to use programs like Discord, especially if it's free to use but we should also think about what we pay them instead of money and that's why I think we should pressure such companies more into ensuring that at least basic consumer rights are kept.

I think while discord holds a responsibility, a lot of it falls to the admins and responsibility of the user. I think the maturity of the user defines the problems the user might face, ive been a long time discord user and only run/join servers that are family friendly or nsfw and have strong moderation/enforcement.

    • @sirflimflam
      @sirflimflam 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

I'm not really sure if you can really assign responsibility to Discord as an entity, really. It's too big to police by one entity, and do we even want them "policing" it, really? Like, having admins that can swing into private discords and read your logs because something you said triggered some automated mechanism? I feel like they could do more to warn kids about the dangers, but these are dangers that have always been around on the internet. As a one-time kid when generic aol, web, or even IRC chatrooms were all the craze, we didn't listen. We thought we knew better. We'd never find ourselves in a dangerous situation. Little do we know we're giving our address to people we think we can trust, that we think we've properly vetted as good people. I still remember giving my address to some guy I'd known for a while in a programming chatroom cause he was going to give me a burned copy of his Visual Basic CDs. Thankfully he actually was a cool guy and wasn't a creep, but it could have ended way worse for me, and I considered myself internet smart. Kids today aren't any better, and the safeguards are just as miniscule as its always been, because the only safeguard you have to keep your kid safe is to keep them off the internet altogether. That's pretty much impossible in this day and age though.

@@sirflimflam Yeah, I don't think so either. You wouldn't hold the mailman responsible when you get a fraudulent letter.
A good communications platform should never be able to even read what goes on in 1:1 conversations. Not saying Discord is like that or is even good, but it falls way outside the scope of a communication tool to police private conversations between their users.
