. as a small boy in the 1960s my mother and I watched the reruns of this show and reruns of make room for daddy and Donna Reed and so on. I have nothing but good memories watching all the vintage sitcoms. Now I'm a late middle aged man only three years away from 70. My parents are dead and I'm pretty much alone. Lord what I wouldn't give to go back to the 60s. I would go insane if it wasn't for my two chihuahuas laying by my side. Thank God for my pets and thank God for TH-cam.

Thomas Lucas you need to change up your life and get out and travel some, get an rv and hit the road, taking your dogs with you, there is nothing going to happen while you sit on a couch along watching 60s reruns. Change is good in life and it comes even in later years.

Thank you so much for posting this. Somehow, I missed it when it originally aired. Of all of the reunion movies that I have seen, this was the best. Most of them are just going through the motions but this is maybe the only exception. The script was great with some very funny and clever lines but most of all, it captured the heart of Dobie Gillis. Bob Denver was totally on and all of the cast seemed to be able to recapture the magic of the original. The only negative was that Tuesday was sorely missed.

Got a real kick out of this and thought much of the spirit of the original television series came through. Dobie's teacher (William Schallert) looked much like he did in the 50's series. Missed Tuesday Welds, but Connie Stevens did a fairly good take on Thalia. Dobie's lecturing of his son at the cash register was a pretty good take on Frank Faylen's character (Dobie's father in the television series). Thank you, RiciDawn, for a nostalgic and fun upload being watched during the COVID 19 shutdown here in San Diego, CA. 5/2020

The main writer on the original show was brought in, but was fired because his script was too crazy. This also happened in the 77 version. Both times the actors were under contract before they fired the writer.
Sheila Kuehl said she thought the original scripts were better, and the people who ended up making the show really never watched the show. She thought it turned them into mediocre shows when they could have been much better.
But the actors were right, so at least they knew how to play their characters. Well except for Connie Stevens who replaced Tuseday Weld.

This film introduced me to Dobie Gillis as a child in the 80s before they re ran the original series on Nick at Night. Thanx 4 uploading the film. Its been years since I've seen it.

  • @dr.barrycohn5461

Wow, marvelous. Thanks for the upload! In real life Zelda made the most of herself as Sheila Kuehl. Sheila enjoyed incredible success as well as Hickman and Denver. They should have shown Zelda blossoming far more than what they did. Too bad Tuesday Weld wasn't there, but they ruined her role so I don't blame her. Making it a musical was perhaps the dumbest idea. Truly a great show during its time. This movie took something from that brilliant show.

    • @gerrydooley951

yes, but they always seem to fuck these shows up. Part of has to be that Dobie was a show of it's time, the '50's (1959-1963). I think Frank Faylen had passed away, maybe Florida Frebius could have shown up. It's a good title though and there are some good scenes.

Then I started watching reruns of Dobie Gillies TV show on Cable TV. A lot of people in my age range only knew Bob Denver as Gilligan because Dobie Gillis did not air in syndication on local TV in Detroit, Michigan

Thanks RiciDawn, for sharing these memories. Been wanting to see this for a long time. In spite of a little too much emphasis on the teen musical subplot, it had just enough of the old juice to make it work-thanks to a reasonable facsimile of Gillis-ish shenanigans and so many of the original cast being available. (We missed you, Tuesday, but Connie’s decent turn as Thalia helps heal the disappointment.).
A fond look back at a more innocent time….and boy, can we ever use that now.

A reference to "Maynard's Farewell to the Troops" episode in the original series, when Maynard's parents asked him about a $28 (about $200 today) long distance charge on their phone bill, and he said he made a call to Monk to congratulate him on his new album, a call made to Copenhagen Denmark which lasted 14 seconds. Phone calls back then were metered and expensive --- they didn't have the satellites and digital equipment they have today.

First off you don't know why she didn't do it so it's rude of you to presume you do. Second, maybe she saw how bad the script was so she refused to be apart of a bad reunion movie. I still have my VHS recording of Bring Me The Head...from when it aired on Encore TV in the 2000s. In his memoir, Bob Denver wrote that CBS made the mistake of scheduling the reunion movie opposite a high-profile miniseries, leading to low ratings. I wish that they had been a few more movies. On a fun note, Dwayne later did a cameo as a CBS executive in Surviving Gilligan's Island.
Also, looking at Bob Denver's hair dyed almost orange in the movie. You cannot tell me that wasn't an in-joke by the producers regarding the fact that Manyard is often cited as the inspiration for Scooby Doo's BFF Shaggy.

Unlike the failed pilot from a decade earlier, this TV movie was never intended to lead to a sequel; it was a simple reuniting of some of the cast of the original series. It was meant to be done tongue-in-cheek, the acting was deliberately overstated and corny, and it was little more than an excuse for the original cast members to get together, play their original characters, and reenact some old gags and skits, particularly by Denver's Maynard. As in the original series, Hickman recreates his fourth-estate monologues in front of "The Thinker." and they're true to form.
Dobie's TV parents weren't present: Frank Faylen died in 1985, and Florida Friebus wasn't up to performing; she passed on later that year.
This is a good reunion for fans of the original series, provided that they don't expect much of a plot and just enjoy the older versions of the series' characters, and the antics they perform.

It was great to see the cast together again, but the story wasn't great. The last part of the movie was better than the beginning. Thalia wanting Dobie dead didn't resonate with me. I was glad to see Dobie finally realize Zelda was the love of his life. She certainly earned it!!!!

In today’s world Thalia would never be interested in Dobie she would be looking for a young , handsome billionaire like Christian Grey.
Zelda would also be looking for Christian Grey and if he ever came along or anyone better than Dobie she will most likely say she’s unhappy and leave poor Dobie. ( over 70% of divorces are initiated by females).
Dobie’s kid would grow up in a single household without his father. Dobie will be complaining that he can’t get access to his son and will be weighed down with child support and lifetime alimony.
Dobie will be spending a lot more time thinking near the statue regarding how things have changed.

I would have shot this with sets, not on location like the show was. The sets didn’t matter, the story and the rapid banter kept it moving! I’d even use the laugh track! Yeah!
I’d use lots of close ups like the old show. I would never have had Maynard wearing that suit. I’d have him running a club and owning the record store. The $ for these enterprises came from his parents who knew that he’d never earn it himself. They had him leave college and go to a school where he learned finance. He has one terrific portfolio as does Dobie.

Here is the scary part - Thalia Menninger was basically *blackmailing the town into surrender* and the town was perfectly willing to sell their mayor (Dobie) for their own selfishness. It was ugly and sick when this TV movie came out - and the policy is just as sick today. (UNfortunately, we as a society have learned exactly SQUAT since.)
