I am proud of Pannónia's work with it - they were great on animation, one of the few "Eastern" animation studios to break over the Iron Curtain, and to open towards the francophone region, they made a great work. The francophone comics inspired and shaped Japanese comics and animation to a degree, more than the US did - and given the heavy split of the world of the Cold War, this is one of the few parts where the West and the East met.
One thing Japan excels at is bringing comics to animated movies, and that's something that is unusual in the West. Trying to replicate the comic style in hand-drawn animation requires too many changes to be recognizable to their source. Comics and animation I think just work too differently.
@@Stevem What carries illustrations in a comic generally don't make an animation that's as good. The early Marvel cartoons from the 60s, called living comics, had something going for it, I suppose. Right now, the best example I can think of is Jonny Quest, though it wasn't taking from a comic source so much as a style.
@@525Lines Batman the Animated Series The Maxx Series Hell even the Heavy Metal film does a decent job All captured their series style successfully Usually the issue is money since 2d animated films don't do well in most territories anymore, not in-comparison to 3d anyway

Oh my god! this is it! I saw this as a small kid on TV, and have been wondering for years what it was.... I was too young to understand, but i remember it left a VERY weird feeling, like, I felt the emptiness of space... it was a bit overwhelming and confusing... but later i came to LOVE Moebius' art... had no idea this was his
Seeing this video and then seeing you only have just under 50k man I'm surprised man I didn't sleep so I'm so tired right now and there was some chill feeling to this whole video, not just the subject but what you made with it
I think Moebius also worked on a little tv animated series adapted from his Arzak character. It's called "Arzak Rhapsody", it's very short and the story is practically non-existent, but it has a great atmosphere (like all his other work) and its worth watching
how can i explain the love i have for both countries? I cannot describe how much i love manga, anime films, and french architecture, literature and design. Jean Giraud is an incredible genius, and think they love Ghibli just melts me completely. Transcendental stuff right here.
I had a very strong influence on Moebius since 2015, when i was at a humble school of arts in my town, one of my friends showed me some of the Moebius drawings and paintings...it blew my mind, even the unreleased Jodorowsky's Dune concept art was something i had never seen in my life.
I really appreciate the style of your commentary and the fact that you seem to engage as much as you can with your audience. I had no idea this movie existed before now, but as soon as I saw that you uploaded a video I became excited to learn about it! Thank you for teaching me something new
I got to know some great animations from Hungary in Monstra Festival 2014 in Lisbon. There was a special selection of Hungarian classical animation and also a very cool selection from the new generation of shorts made in MOME Anim school. I remember being inspired to go to Hungary to study animation! XD
Another great video. You're the only "anime youtuber" I know that knows animation outside the anime bubble. It's nice how you're bringing others to the world of animation.

Ahah, saw it as a child, you did it justice there You always impress me, I didn't know in details about Stargazer or the airtight garage adaptation -and I even wonder how adapting something that is by definition chaotic would work-
I've been meaning to watch Time masters and Fantastic planet for a while now and just recently i've discovered that René Laloux has some other works, like Gandahar, that i added to my list. I'll get to them hopefully before the end of the year. Those Lil'Nemo "before the movie" clips from different authors are always amazing to see. I don't think the final film looks bad, but it doesn't seem to have that extra "atheistic oomph". Although i believe that its worst sin is that the story is all over the place and doesn't flow that well. Lastly there's this blog that features some translated interviews with mangakas, and there's one with Urasawa and H. Eguchi that talk about influences and obviously Moebius is brought up. You know Japanese, stevem so I don't think is that interesting to you, but for others maybe it is. Great video! Sorry for the long post. "Moebius was like a god to mangakas and animators." - Rintaro He made a very Moebius inspired anime with Download and then there is ofcourse Nausicaa, very much deserving of the title "Moebius Anime". Very well researched video. You covered a lot of stuff I didn't expect. Could you send me his Japanese TV adds, those are news to me! I love that Dezaki, directly or not, worked with Moebius, even if it was just a little trailer. He's a legend aswell and the short came out looking great. A whole movie like that would've been a dream. And there is that Chinese CG movie that is supposedly based on his work, but I can't find out much about it. PS: Feherlofia video when? @@Stevem Two Super Nintendo RPGs, Paladin’s Quest (aka Lennus: Memories of an Ancient Machine) and Lennus 2: The Apostles of the Seals, also have a similar aesthetic to Moebius. The games’ concept artists, Hiroyuki Kato and Keisuke Goto, cite Moebius as their influence.
@@Stevem I know it's not quite your alley, (seems you focus on Japanese films) but have you heard of There Will Come Soft Rains? the Russian animation and reading is pretty surreal in its own way.
I'm of the generation that saw TIME MASTERS and LAPUTA on bbc 2 in the late 80s. Both were hugely popular at school. I really think TM is underrated, it has a great tone and aesthetic and despite not being quite up to the technical standards Moebius hoped for, still a wonderful watch. I want so badly for a remaster with the English voice cast.
Thanks for this! Found the movie on a certain site and really loved it!! This also caused me to look up Light Years again. The opening music of the American release blew my mind when I was a kid haha
@@Stevem I always forget its proper name. But since you're familiar with that and its original music, even better for comparing to the cheesed-up, very 80s American version. Subtle but telling difference :)
I will always remember back in 1998, just after I finished my Master Degree in chemical/ environment engineering and had to do my military service, how many Moebius and more broadly Humanoïdes Associés' book I read. And a couple of months later when I was in an hospital bed for well let's say Kids don't play with windshields anti-session, his work, their work were among the reasons to keep me alive even after I found that Stanley Kubrick and Yehudi Menuhin died even before I could watch "Eyes wide shut" or even to leave my wheeling chair and walk to be frank. Was only 24-25 at that time. People like Jan Giraud or Isao Takahata to name a very few will always be by my side, I always mourn Setsuko, always be John Dyfool. Sorry for the complete paragraph.
This is the very first VHS my family got. I don't know how it happened as I was too young, around 7-8. This definitely changed me as a kid. So fascinating. I remember being so excited by the music opening with the buggy, and feeling so empty and confused about what I've just watch during the final scene.
Ha, les maîtres du temps.. it was a classic that was showed at every Christmas here in quebec in early 1980... really quite strange for a 10 years old perspective.. yes I was scare about this movie but yet there was something special that no other anime would provide.
thanks algorithm. other Mobeus - like anime/cartoons for everyone. Gandahar - a french adult cartoon i saw when i was way too young lol art by Caza another french artist who was a friend of moebius. Aeon Flux and Reign the conqueror and by extenstion Tron Uprising - all Peter Chung led work but the moebius influence is front and center and very strong especially with Reign and Tron given Mob did the design work on the first tron film. The Rain Children - another French cartoon but beautiful, also drawn again by Caza but still, very moebius.
The french dvd of «Time masters» (collector edition-2 discs ) had some interesting bonuses with director Laloux speaking candidly about the film’s production issues. It would have been great if Moebius had made a comic book version of the film. It has always intrigued and amazed me to see how Jean Giraud was able to lead this immense career in «bande dessinée» (comics) using such different styles; sci fi and western (Blueberry character). What a master of drawing! (Speaking of influences from european comics, «Valérian» by Jean-Claude Mézières had a few elements «stolen» by George Lucas for his «Star Wars»).
I saw there was suppose to be quite a bit more in the French dvd but I could barely get the English one Star wars is a collection of loose ends , so it's not a surprise the term stolen comes up a lot from different sources
Looks like this animation of his work influenced deeply the new animated series Scavengers Reign. You could see it on the series that was something connecting Meobius with it. The key visuals on the series the setup the characters and many more thing, but i wasn't quite sure. By the way highly suggesting to any one that comes by this comment to take a look at Scavengers Rein. P.S. Would love to build up a team of animators to make possible some of Moebius work real!
For people who haven't seen it check out the anime Kaiba, first 6 episodes are far out and then it turns generic. People used to talk about philosophy in anime which was for the large part bunk but Kaiba asks genuine questions, hugely recommend.
The Fifth Element is probably the movie with his biggest overall contribution and aesthetic. It's quite clear that even the stuff he didn't specifically design for it was still inspired by his aesthetic - it's all over the JPGaulthier costumes.
I’m not sure about the way ‘pillow shot’ is used in relation to anime. If we try to translate live action cinematography to the work of people like Miyazaki, his ‘ma’ does something more. The mono no aware of those moments is particular. Perhaps animations like this make for an interesting point between these concepts.
certainly Miyazaki knows Ozu though and his shot probs have some relation to that language, albeit the medium being different changes things, Time Masters has a lot of just long shots of the landscapes and about which don't really relate back to the scene that much more just set a mood
STEVEM of course you’re right. What I’m wondering is whether an animation like Les Maîtres du temps effectively engages with this central Japanese cinematographic technique. I am also not sure about the genealogy of the terminology ‘pillow shot’, did Ozu use this phrase? I know it comes from Makurakotoba, but I’ve never been able to find the right connection between an encasing epithet and these moments of ma or mono no aware. What I mean to say is, on the one hand Makurakotoba seems like a poor match for what is actually being done, on the other I don’t know if it has been successfully exercised outside of Japanese film making.
@@stuffandnonsense8528 www2.bfi.org.uk/news-opinion/news-bfi/features/enigmatic-pillow-shots-yasujiro-ozu When describing Ozu's work, pillow shots is a quite common term used for it "A term coined by critic Noël Burch, it links to film the tradition of pillow words in classical poetry - short addendums to a line that reflect on or even shift the meaning of what comes next." Noël Burch was an american film critic who moved to France from a young age
STEVEM ah, thank you, I hadn’t known it was Burch who had first used that term. As I say, it seems like Makurakotoba is not the right concept to invoke, but perhaps I’ve missed something. As I say, I think ‘ma’ is exactly the right concept. If Japanese poetry were to be invoked in these cases then I think kireji would be a much better choice than Makurakotoba. Kireji punctuate, they cut and impose a pause. Anyway, it just always strikes me as a bit of a misnomer. Thank you for the video and comments, I’m always grateful for thoughtful pieces.
@@stuffandnonsense8528 just to clarify one thing, pillow shot isn't a term used to just talk about japanese film, this is not a japanese film either but a french one made in Hungary, so i wouldn't be interested in using something which is burdened in Japanese culture to describe it
I saw the French cut on DVD by sheer luck. I never knew it had an English dub. The title on the DVD cover said "Time Masters". It was weird, but it was Moebiüs, so I let the weirdness slide.
I've never heard of this Moebius animated movie, finding any of his stuff is like finding treasure! Nelvana Studios were certainly inspired by his style, just look at the animated feature of the truly awful 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special and the 1985 Saturday morning cartoon of SW: Droids! So, how we get this Time Masters movie released on BluRay here in the US?
Small gripe, but kind of important; none of the Heavy Metal movie segments were actually based off of Moebius. The opening segment, though it has similarities to his style, is based off of the work of the recently late Juan Giménez
I would say while not a direct one for one of the long tomorrow it is absolute baseD on it in the same way Miyazaki uses source material , it is also referenced as such . I saw heavy metal before I read the long tomorrow and all I could think while reading before I knew they wEre connected is that these two things are very similar seems like they ripped off moebius
Also one of the writers on the movie is Dan obanon who literally wrote the long tomorrow with moebius , and is generally a screen writer not someone in comics
The film is beautiful, weird, visually exciting, but i have no recollection of the actual plot. And i saw it like three years ago, not twenty. Who are all these characters, what was going on beyond that the kid got lost and they eventually find him? I'm not asking for an explanation, i guess what im saying is that maybe the flow of the work is a bit too meandering. Certainly it has historical importance.
Wasnt Dragons Heaven purely inspired by Moebius ? It's almost like he animated it himself. Everything from the character design to backgrounds to clothing is pure Moebius. Oh and I'm very curious about that "Airtight Garage" project with Otomo. That would have been really interesting.
Dragons Heaven was manga you can see panels from it in this video later on, if it was purely inspired I don't think 100%, but aesthetically the creator like many other manga-ka was hugely inspired by moebius's design language , colours , panel layouts etc the story not so much
@@Stevem The story is indeed quite mecha oriented, but I can see the Moebius inspirations here from his earlier works. Honesty, if you were to show the French dub to anyone without showing the credits, they would think it's a collaboration between Moebius and a Japanese artist. I would add that the drawing technique is more than inspired, it's like seeing animated panels from "Le Garage Hermétique" and other similar works from the master, indeed the colours are the same, but also the line art with the typical dashed patterns. I have seen "Les Maitres du Temps" multiple times too and "Heavy Metal" of course, and Dragons Heaven would clearly pass for an episode of Heavy Metal, just add a pinch of 80's hair metal for the music and there you go...
@@LegendaryGauntlet just to clarify for sure the linework is close but that style of line work was not created by moebius it is a side effect of that french movement in comics of the time, So when I say inspired I'm just trying to be charitable opposed to saying they copied it or something like that since I dont think Moebius is the first either
@@Stevem Hm I'd argue that he was one of the few at the very origin of that movement, the only close artist from the group of pioneers I can see is Jean-Claude Mézières, with maybe a bit similar kind of linework but with a very different approach to color (Moebius has a definitive watercolor palette that is his own). Druillet was from the same group but with a different style... And Bilal was using very special drawing techniques involving ball pens, oil paint, and color pens which was unique too and quite different. When they all contributed to "Metal Hurlant" (the French Heavy Metal magazine at the origin of all of this) we could clearly see the differences - and they created a school of their own, IMHO. Ah :D a lot can be said about his haha
@@LegendaryGauntlet it's fair to say Franco-Belgian comics ( bande dessinée ) in particular Jijé, among things like ligne claire and even Art Nouveau, hold impact on the work of Moebius. Not to mention Little Nemo which certainly he took something from, even working on it's movie and sequel comics.
@@xyanide1986 well i remember the first time i saw that video I said "fuck you Kenny i was going to make that video!" but now i made this instead and i think im happier for it
@@Stevem best nightmare fule for me as a kid. I only see people brively mention the movie sometimes but having read a little about the main artist of the movie im 100% there is a lot to dig up there.

The francophone comics inspired and shaped Japanese comics and animation to a degree, more than the US did - and given the heavy split of the world of the Cold War, this is one of the few parts where the West and the East met.
I'm glad to hear you talk about this film. I've always loved the work of Moebius and René Laloux.
One thing Japan excels at is bringing comics to animated movies, and that's something that is unusual in the West. Trying to replicate the comic style in hand-drawn animation requires too many changes to be recognizable to their source. Comics and animation I think just work too differently.
they've always struggle in the adaptation , not impossible but you'd need to really take advantage of the animated medium in way a lot don't

Eguchi that talk about influences and obviously Moebius is brought up. other Mobeus - like anime/cartoons for everyone.
It would
have been great if Moebius had made a comic book version of the film. It has always intrigued and amazed me to see how Jean Giraud was able to lead this immense career
in «bande dessinée» (comics) using such different styles; sci fi and western (Blueberry character).

@@stuffandnonsense8528
www2.bfi.org.uk/news-opinion/news-bfi/features/enigmatic-pillow-shots-yasujiro-ozu
When describing Ozu's work, pillow shots is a quite common term used for it
"A term coined by critic Noël Burch, it links to film the tradition of pillow words in classical poetry - short addendums to a line that reflect on or even shift the meaning of what comes next."
Noël Burch was an american film critic who moved to France from a young age

How did you manage to miss The Moebius Strip ?!
