I think he picked his career and determination for success over his past relationships. He was never emotionally invested. I can see how the assistant could misunderstand, but she seemed to allow her own emotions and delusions take over. You can never force what was never yours to begin with.

That is the theme of 99% of movies and TV shows throughout the world. Only difference being that parents in West don't have a right to interfere, whereas in East mostly the parents are the final decision makers. A kid can't simply ignore them. 🙂
