Penn State fans are buzzing about the team's decision to move on from offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich. Head coach James Franklin held his Monday press conference, which was dominated by the topic. Now, we're continuing the conversation on our press conference recap. Senior Editor Nate Bauer gives his thoughts on the decision to move on from Yurcich and what the core of the issue was for Franklin.
Check out the full video here, or on the Blue White Illustrated TH-cam Channel.
Franklin on what he wants in the next Penn State OC
It was a simple answer to a complex question that Franklin fielded earlier today. What do you want in the next offensive coordinator that you didn't get from this previous one?
"So at the end of the day, we need to play well, and we need to play well against our toughest opponents. That's the reality of it. We embrace that. That's why you come to a place like Penn State as a coach, as a player, and we understand what comes with that, you know, the positives and the challenges. You embrace it or don't come to a place like Penn State," he said.
Overall production is great, but being great when it matters was the key.
"In terms of what I'm looking for on offense, is, again, back to that point: Somebody that's going to put us in the best position to play our best football when it's needed most and against the best competition."
    Why make the move now?
Franklin didn't mince words about why he decided to pull the trigger on firing Yurcich with two games left in the regular season.
"If you've gotten to the point where you feel like that's what you're going to do, I'm not great at like, faking it, you know. I want to be as transparent and up front as I possibly can be."
"So when you get to the point you feel like that's the right decision, then I think you make it. Part of this also is the belief of the rest of the staff and the guys in the Lasch Building and the locker room."
So, despite being a man down in the process against a tough Rutgers defense, Franklin thinks it was the best decision.
"But to me, when you feel like that's the decision, in my opinion, you don't delay that decision as long as you feel like you have some internal options that can do it."
The Bottom line of why Penn State fired Mike Yurcich.

Where does Franklin account for the three bone-headed decisions vs. Michigan:
    1) Down 14-3, PSU drives for a TD near the end of the 1st half, but decides to go for 2 then. They don't make it, still down14-9 and will be chasing that point.
    2) Down 17-9 in the 4th, roughly 4 mins to play, goes for it from PSU's own 30, 4th down , 4 yds to go. Rather than punt and rely on a good defensive effort when UoM has only scored 3 points in the 2nd half, PSU doesn't get it, AND THE FIRST PLAY MICHIGAN RUNS AFTER THAT, Corum goes 30 yds for the TD.
    3) Down 24-9, they drive (throwing the ball ) and do score a TD with about 2 mins to play, down 24-15. But rather than kick the extra point and only be down 8, he AGAIN decides to go for 2. They again don't make it, but rather than be down one score, down 9 they will still need 2 scores, and they only have 2 mins and 1TO.
IS THAT THE OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR'S FAULT???

Offensive play calling this year was horrendous. With Allars arm strength and speed of Lambert-Smith and not use it or basically any deepballs was insane saw more more deepballs on a single Washington drive vs Utah than we threw all year lol.

Franklin is doing an excellent job - he’s winning a lot of football games, putting guys into the nfl left and right, and getting Penn State to a very good place. Very few teams
can best Michigan and Ohio State. It’s kind of like getting mad as a fan in the SEC because you can’t beat Bama. I get it but please, appreciate the fact Penn State even has a program and is a top 15 program. Pretty good and yes, they can be even better with the talent they have.

Lmao Yea LSU would be pissed if they didn’t beat Bama once every few years lmao just take a back seat because it seems like you’re more than willing.. we can’t just sit back and accept 3rd place and also it doesn’t matter at all weather they make it to the NFL it’s a plus that’s for sure but it’s irrelevant to me as a Fan when it comes to expectations the only thing that matters is winning a Championship and WE ARE LONG OVERDUE

Finally someone said it. Franklin is great at recruiting and seems to be great at making a wonderful locker room environment. If he’s the one steering the offense in a bad direction, then yes I’d be upset. But idk if that’s the case. He’s clearly making the moves to get the offense going. He’s had to have been thinking about firing yurcich for awhile to do it literally the day after Michigan game. I think he’s under appreciated. And I’d fear for what donkey ass we would get if we fired him.
I think we need to write a fat check to a highly qualified individual for OC. And if Franklin does have any major part in game planning scheme he needs to give up the reigns and let the guy we pay big to do his thing.

Problem on relying on the defense to win, a few injuries or fatigue leave you exposed. No excuses for lack of offense. Poor O line play is the foundation of these losses. No push, no holes, poor pass protection. Drew has no confidence.

Stats don't lie folks! Franklin over his 124 games, has faced a team ranked in the top 25, 37 times. The Nittany Lions are just 12-25 in those matchups.
Franklin’s record against top-10 teams is even worse. In 19 games against top-10 opponents, the Nittany Lions are just 3-17.
What about against OSU and UM? Well, in his time at Penn State, Franklin has a combined 4-16 against Ohio State and Michigan, with a 1-9 record against the Buckeyes and a 3-7 mark against the Wolverines. Truly and impressive record.
It's not the OC that's the problem, it's Franklin that 's the problem.

  • @dennyshafer2499
    @dennyshafer2499 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Let's face facts - JF sucks at Xs and Os. This isn't a new problem; its been here ALL year with no adjustments. Yes, maybe our WRs aren't a strength but I find it hard to believe you can't have plays and coach the wideouts how to run routes and get open. PSU never practiced this all year. And when JF get questioned about this, he says the identity is to dink and dunk into third downs - that says it all - JF is the problem! He needs to have good coordinators to take this program forward. UM and OSU obviously great programs, PSU needs to catchup on game day with better adjustments from the coaches.

A question that has not been really answered is will Beau Pribula ever get a real chance to show his passing skill? Maybe he is a better runner than passer, but he did throw for 34 tds in HS if memory serves. Reading that he was the leading rusher in the Rutgers game makes me think the OL is still not big boy enough to open holes consistently for running backs they have, who by most accounts are studs. Imo Beau is the more confident QB. That goes a long way in how a team performs.

Bottom line, you have the kids you have. A superior college OC knows how to make the whole equal more than the sum of its parts. Yurcich, on the other hand, often appeared to make the whole less. It’s not enough to say it’s complicated. Of course it’s complicated, that’s why people who are really good at it make millions of dollars. Franklin is running a huge business, and not putting out the product his customers want to buy isn’t an option. So he needs to figure it out or he’s gonna be the loneliest rich guy in State College.

  • @johnnyjohn9499
    @johnnyjohn9499 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I would go big with the OC hire. Nothing against the interim guys, but is Seider, a guy whose bread butter is working with RBs, who we really need to help elevate our QB play? Ain't hatin, just sayin. Also, does it concern anyone else that all but one of Seider's blue-chip recruits have experienced regression after their freshman season? Could just be bad luck with injury (e.g., Noah Cain), a case of better incoming talent pushing guys down the depth chart (e.g., Holmes, Lee, Ford), or a player development issue (e.g., Singleton). Maybe a bit of all three, but it's a disturbing trend and something to keep an eye on. I say go BIG with the hire; the assistants will stick around, if more cash is thrown their way, and we got the cheddar. If the assistants don't like it, sorry and have a nice life!

The entire PSU football media is soft and squishy, outside Dave Jones. Jones is the only one with the courage to call out what he sees. I think these guys see it too, they are just afraid. It's unfortunate because doing that one thing is really their main job, and what is a service to the fans who don't get the opportunity to question the leadership. It's also important to point out it's not about being confrontational, it's just asking the questions that force the top guy to answer to his decisions and face some tough questions. You can do all that without being a jerk. It's just doing your job.

A&M just got rid of a coach with a big pay out. Penn State needs to do the same thing. As long as Franklin is the head coach. We will always be the 3rd best team in the big ten. What coach builds a team? In today's college game without a deep ball threat. Franklin SUCKS, stop the run, you got us beat! I've been a Penn state fan for 40 years. it seems mediocrity can be a self-fulfilling prophecy. 12 points/ game vs. meaningful opponents IS mediocrity. with no blocking schemes to create holes & block the LB's (when was the last counter or isolation run?), 5 yds, is a long run, & if you don't throw the ball vertically, how can you expect "explosive" plays? Oh, & thank you very much Nate for summarizing the observations of many of us, "in the stands." Or, the nursing home couch, watching a once PROUD Penn State, struggling to shed the ugly skin of mediocrity.

Penn State has the most depressing fan base in existence. This team has the talent to be right back in the convo with the right OC.
You dont see this from Michigan fans and that team is embroiled in controversy 24/7, coached by a garbage human, won three postseason games in like a decade, one of which was a citrus bowl against Florida and the other two were B1G title games against Iowa and Purdue. They were embarrassed on the national stage in the last two years by teams they shoulda beat on NYE, and their fans have no issue acting like they're top tier.

Reminds me of Jim Mora in New Orleans. Elevated the team to the B level but not the A level. Good enough? Probably not.

James Franklin makes 3 of the most idiotic game decisions of college football history, throws his OC under the bus.

Because James knew the angry mob was ready to crucify him so he gave them their pound of flesh to distract them from the real issue.

All I can say is over the 3 yrs he was our OC I was always like where is this brilliant offensive mind that all everybody talked about. Unimaginative and very very poor play caller. Very rarely schemed people open and never used his athletes. Most of the time I was dumbfounded on his play calling. His offense might work in div 2 but at the D1 high level his offense didn't work period. I'd say he may have called 2 good games this yr n that's being generous. The non explosive plays is just God damn ridiculous. Bye bye let's move onward n upward.

They are 3 - 19 against the top 5 since 1994. the problem isn't Yurcich. Franklin is another Brian Kelly. Overpaid coach that will fire assistants to save his job.

But you couch players don’t have any influence or are known to anyone so STFU. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 i Love this game and it’s apart of it .

Haha there had to be a fall guy and it was Yurcich. What about Spanklin? He 3-17 vs top ten teams in his tenure. Or Manny Diaz? He looks like a young Robert de Niro in Goodfellas but without Joe Pesci haha 😂. Michigan ran in down Penn St's throat 32 straight times and still couldn't stop it despite the bs sign stealing. Penn St is good but not when it comes to big boy football. Michigan is Penn state's daddy. Spanklin is one the biggest whiners in the Big ten. Go Blue!

My dad lived outside Nashville when Franklin was at Vanderbilt. One day Franklin's telling the media and locals that he's never leaving Vanderbilt, this is where he wants to be and will be here forever, yadda yadda yadda. Like not even the next week or so, the announcement comes out that he's the new Penn State head coach. They haven't forgotten that, and we shouldn't either. Can't trust the man, especially what comes out of his mouth. Sad. We should have gone after Urban Meyer a few years ago when he was available, not sure if he'd come now. Oh well.

@@chrisw4192 Ahh you are such a good boy. It is incumbent upon Penn State to find a coach . They have an excuse maker currently. The problem is Penn State does not wish to progress, it prefers to be second fiddle.
No pressure year in and year out to win the big games. If you realize that then you have an excellent coach for the task.

Bottom line = come on guys - this is Franklin Blaming others to save his own ass! He's feeling the heat - He can't beat top 10 teams - never has - Pedophile U is and will always be second tier B1G team. Franklin can't handle the big boys on the block!
