Ivan , I've only recently found your channel. We have camped , tourer caravan & the last 8 yrs static van (in total 40+yrs ) .Several things I have noted in your plans that I would advise for improvement:- Dehumidifiers , I have used Aero 360 with replaceable blocks to great effect (even for winter storage of tourer) ....... Condensation, all your Windows will have Condensation, especially your bedroom ( just breathing) & lounge using gas fire , so , have plenty of paper roll (-industrial size) to wipe up every morning ! You can also get rolls of "Drip Stop" to collect drips ..... Freezing conditions , I once had the gas freeze enough to have very low pressure on cooker burner & pilot lights out one morning , so insulate your gas pipes as well & protect your bottles from icy winds ! Finally be prepared to disconnect your water pipe under the van , so a quick access through your planned skirt is necessary. I hope these tips will be of use to you & wish you both well .
Hi Ivan , ingenious idea with the floor insulation 👍 regarding adding extra insulation to walls it's easy to do I just restudded over existing wall boards using 20mm studding added new insulation reboarded with 5mm internal plywood and wallpapered you haven't then got seam beading and the difference in the heat retention is unbelievable Cheers Andy
The caravan is lovely and should keep you warm throughout the colder days. I think it's brilliant that you are sharing all your experience to help others. There will be lots of grateful folks out there. Take care x
I think it's brilliant and so peaceful to live in a cavern one day when am older and my kids have grown up and gone I mite buy one live in it like you guys well-done to you both
It’s always a win when you find a cheaper option that does the same job as the expensive stuff. Don’t compromise your well-being though to save money , the bills will be there when we’re all dead and buried . Keep confortable over the winter and if you’re cold put them heaters on, sod the bills.
Thanks Ivan, that looks like a bargain and as always you've got a good plan. Those panel heaters look really nice and hopefully will keep you and Ginny warm. Take care and all the best. Stevie
Hi Ivan great idea about the installation well done spotting the gap under the caravan. I’ve loads of bubble wrap and didn’t think to do my outside tap with it as the one I had needs replaced now I have a free option 😉 I live in Scotland and our temperatures usually drop end September and stay that way mostly till April as we are now retired we can’t afford to have our heating on all day but have it coming on when we need it most. I’m a big fan of water bottles and plenty of layers and we manage fine… great video
I thought of you when I was looking at oil heaters for a small flat and it occured to me that you were due a drop on TH-cam, then up you popped!!!!!!! I do enjoy your down to earth videos. Cheers Ivan.
We pick up sheets of bubble wrap from supermarkets for free. There is usually a piece of it in the fruit boxes, like apples and pears. The shops don't mind us taking it (we have asked) as it means they don't have to dispose of it. If you need some bigger pieces of bubble wrap though, go to a furniture shop and ask them if they have any that you can have. When they get peices of furniture in and they set it up in the shop and it has usually arrived wrapped in swathes of bubble wrap and again, the shop are glad to be rid of it!
@@CaravanLifeUK i just wanted you to know so you can get what you need to do theres nothing worse than working in the rain or getting under neath a van i hope you will be ok your a good man great stuff love the channel
The good thing with a caravan is that if we do get any sun it soon helps warm the place up. I'm really interested to hear how you get on with the panel heaters. They have them in retirement flats which is where I'll be moving next!
If there are any livestock farm around where you are , you can ask if they can give you any sheep wool, they sometimes give for free or for a few pounds at most, you can use it as an insulation layer between bubble wrap and silver sheet you have. ( l bought 2 sheep’s wool for £5 from a farm shop, but many of them give for free)
Looks good id run them two half hrs in morning and same at night on 18 degrees this will stop damp. Those damp boxes are also good in winter from poundstrecther etc.
Going under your van, wear overalls first heated and a bubble wrap home made three quarter jacket, ideal if used for cold weather jobs out side, also easy on the bones lying on your back. Hope u get cold weather payments.
I think elec heaters pull the same wattage on low or high temp unless they are 1 or 2 kw etc try a cheap useage plug that has a digital display to monitor mate might help keep you warmer, love the windscreen protector insulation 👍🏻
Sorry mate that won’t do nothing trust me I lives in a van for years, you need proper insulation for underneath the van and that’s how you will keep the warmth in and the cold out.
Well done Ivan, you have saved yourself a good few quid there.Would you be better off with the large bubble bubble wrap? I think the smal l pound shop bubble wrap may not be as thick insualtion wise as it is very thin. Obviously you can double it up or more but in my own experience large bubbles are best. It is always worth spending out occasionally.
Another thing you can do is thicker curtains for winter there are allot of windows and maybe a glass door and a blanket over your legs with a hot water bottle on your knee you will be snug as a bug i lived in one for 7 years

@@CaravanLifeUK if u can get access to a thermal imaging camera it would be good to do a comparison before and after doing the insulation. It would also let u see how it compares to the factory fitted stuff. The camera is used looking at the surfaces from the outside to see how much heat is escaping and leak paths. Very worth while. Also I think there’s a TH-cam channel called the off grid bench. Used to be called of grid Scotland. He has insulated his caravan as well.
you said it was cold in there thats the reason why i know we have plenty of rain soon how ever we have 3 dry days next week wednesday thursday and friday to let you know it may help if your going to fix it or even tomorrow day is good the rainis on at 9pm sunday night into monday

It is worth a go Ivan, but you might find that you do need something more substantial.

yes one or two will look into it Thank you
Good thinking Ivan , looks like the van will be warm this winter 👍
Hope so Thank you Michael
Excellent idea
Thank you much appreciated William
Well done you 👏👏👏 Very savvy .
Thank you
Good wheeze. Campers often have that silvered bubble wrap and it does make a difference.
Thank you

I would of put heat reflecting foil behind the panel heaters also would of marine plywood the hole of the underneath of the van
Thank you much appreciated

The big one switches between 1 & 2 Thank you for the info
I would put the buble rap on the outside its probably get a bit wet or damp
Hi you need thermal linings on your curtains aswell even though you have Double glazing has we found out and trust me it made a big difference
Think they have them
Yes we just bought some Thank you much appreciated Patricia
Sorry mate that won’t do nothing trust me I lives in a van for years, you need proper insulation for underneath the van and that’s how you will keep the warmth in and the cold out.
You definitely don't want a freezing khazi! Good move Ivan.

We got extra insulation in our static. Floor and walls. And still gets very cold.
Would you be as well to put shelves over the radiators to deflect the heat into the room and not up the back of the curtains and out of the window.
Another thing you can do is thicker curtains for winter there are allot of windows and maybe a glass door and a blanket over your legs with a hot water bottle on your knee you will be snug as a bug i lived in one for 7 years
Just bought thermal ones
Thank you much appreciated
Spray foam any gaps while your under there.
Good idea Thank you Olive

Have you insulated the van yet?
I think ur better to get the multi layer supper foil I know the price is pretty steep but it’s designed to a std.
Thank you much appreciated

Yes lots of rain to come

Just be careful of that heater in bathroom you may be contravening the electrical regs mate
Most of your heat will be lost through the roof if roof is well packed you will be fine
Thank you much appreciated
Just be careful you are not just putting a tea cosies on your property and inviting mould spores In
