For a couple of years in the late 80's and early 90's I lived in NYC, walking distance to the 55 Bar in Greenwich Village, where Mike Stern held court a couple of times a month. I went as often as I could. For a $5 cover, which included two beers, I sat and watched one of the world's greatest guitarist rip through mostly jazz standards like My Romance (which he almost always opened with), Like Someone In Love, Equinox, and others with the most amazing pyrotechnic guitar playing rooted in Parkeresque bebop but also unmistakable blues rock riffs that would have made Jimi smile. It was amazing and the most spectacular live playing I ever heard in a frankly absurd setting as the 55 Bar wasn't anything to write home about - dark, dank, cramped, a bar full of professional drunks, and still packed so tight that Mike Stern had to lift his guitar up so that patrons could make their way to the john. I wouldn't trade those nights for anything.
The 55 is gone now-I don’t think there will ever be another place like it. I, too would never trade the nights that I was able to see Mike and so many other unbelievable musicians there!
The 55 Bar truly sounds like a legendary spot where incredible music and memories were made. It’s amazing to hear all these stories, and it’s bittersweet knowing the place is gone.😞
I grew up listening to Hendrix, Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page, but I tell all of my friends and fellow guitar players that the greatest guitar solo EVER is Mike’s solo on Miles Davis’ Fat Time. What a sweet, beautiful soul this guy has too.
Really nice job on this interview-you were able to get into a deeper level on some topics with Mike that have been glossed over in many interviews. Mike Stern is a national treasure-so wonderful to see him still playing and enjoying himself at 71, even after that serious injury.
This is such a great interview! Really inspiring and you're such a good interviewer! Amazing your channel is only just getting started. Wishing you lots of success!
Thank you so much for the incredible support! 🙏 We’re so glad you enjoyed the interview, and your kind words mean a lot to us. Stay tuned for more inspiring conversations-big things are on the way! 🚀🎶
Great interview. Kept hoping Mike would mention the late Dean Brown when talking about friends/colleagues who passed away unexpectedly this year. They played with a lot of the same people, even together in Vital Information. Funny enough, Chris and Dennis played with him frequently too up until his passing. Very underrated guitar player.
I've had the privilege of seeing Mike Stern three times in Panama, and another three times in USA. I find his playing refreshing and very engaging. Thanks for this interview.
This was so much fun to watch, thanks a lot! The questions and interactions were so wonderful, really let the converstation feel open and natural. Mike seems like such a great person to be around.
My favorite Stern album by far! Learning the title track on guitar was hard as 💩. The whole album is perfect start to finish. Leni's song Sandbox is beautiful. 🍻
@@dopeYEAHtalkI remember in the 80’s, painstakingly transcribing Chromazone…all of the instruments. I spent hours. Then the Scher Real Book came out and it was all in there! 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
looooove mike. his playing literally changed my life and got me thru a lot of tough times… i never knew his half sister was kyra sedgewick. f$&@ i wanna hear Spinning Wheel w jaco!!!
I took lessons with a guy named Wayne Heddinger who claimed to be in a wedding band with DiMeola. Wayne would write charts off the top of his head and put bop changes in Bossa songs , i would just play the changes and he would shred over top . I can see why guitar was such a big deal to their generation, Sinatra recorded with jobim and blew up that scalar style
i never got to know much about @Mike. Maybe, this is the first time i've ever listened to him. This intimate interview is all around amazing to me. It's a pleasure to meet him! Anxious to really listen to some @Mike asap. ThAnk you!
Beautiful interview.... So insightful. shit i've never heard before. All the Miles stuff and especially the Jim Beard story. I was playing Jim Beards music for my kids wen they were little and they still love him... Love Mike Stern. Thank you very much for this amazing interview!!!
I've been a fan of Stern since about '94. The Bob Berg and Mike Stern mix was great. Can't forget monster drummer Dennis Chambers and beast bass player Lincoln Goines.
Thank you for the awesome comment! 🙏 Mike, Dennis, and the entire band always bring something special to the table. By the way, we’ve got an exciting episode coming up in January with Dennis Chambers himself! Stay tuned!
Thank you so much for the kind words! 🙏 I’m really glad you’re enjoying the interviews. It’s all about creating a comfortable space. Stay tuned for more!
If there was a category of the killer guitarists all around the world, definitely Mike Stern would be the first!!! He would also be the first of super talented musicians, that remains so humble, all these years of his career!!! Amazing guitarist, excellent musician and a real humble person!!! Thank you Mike for all your amazing playing all these years!!!❤️❤️❤️
Excellent conversation. Relaxed. Spontaneous. Friendly. Not contrived. Very insightful. I feel like I really got to know both of you. All more than enough to subscribe to your channel. I will dig in for more here. Cheers & regards from Stratford, Ontario, Canada. 😎✌🎸
Mike ,great guy.. a dynamo of sorts....one of my absolute favorites..in spite of what he has been through , the positivity remains..as well it should he enjoys his own talents as he should..Honest too...love the clip of them rocking out with Leni ..dont get tired of that such a great band..
Wow, I have never heard anyone interview Mike with this much depth about real life, not just music. Amazing work!
Thank you so much! We try to do our best! 🎼
Great Interview. Mike Stern Great Musician telling some Amazing Stories of the Musician's Life.
#
the guitar at the end has a beautiful warm tone
Finally Stern playing a Les Paul! … he is great
Without a doubt this is the best Mike Stern interview. So nicely done ... loose and cohesive at the same time.
Thank you so much! 🙏 We’re thrilled you enjoyed it!

I loved that bar for Stern music nights, back in 1993. He'd knock the walls down.
The 55 Bar truly sounds like a legendary spot where incredible music and memories were made. It’s amazing to hear all these stories, and it’s bittersweet knowing the place is gone.😞
This dude has always stayed true to the pursuit - always used the same guitar , always searching etc…
Much respect to Mike Stern
Much respect indeed! 🙌
When Miles kicks you out for drugs, well that’s a lot of drugs!
Great interview

Mike’s solo on Fat Time is truly iconic!
The song was written for him by Miles when he was a bit heavier! Later after Mike lost a lot of weight Miles would call him "Time"
Really nice job on this interview-you were able to get into a deeper level on some topics with Mike that have been glossed over in many interviews. Mike Stern is a national treasure-so wonderful to see him still playing and enjoying himself at 71, even after that serious injury.
Thank you so much! 🙏 We’re glad you enjoyed the talk and honored he opened up and even played some tunes for us!

Love Mike Stern! First time I heard him was on my guitar instructor 's Randy Roos' album. Never missed one of Mike's albums since my Berklee years.
Thanks for sharing your story, and cheers to those unforgettable Berklee years! 🎓
Yes! I remember first hearing Mike in Boston at Pooh’s Pub with Tiger’s Baku around 1980. Always great!

Why does chandler have an english accent here?
😅 Yeah, Rob really resembles him. Could they BE more look alike?
For taking the WRONG drugs. Lots of coke in the band.

An hour of this guy talking about how good he is and namedropping. And he plays like every other rock guitarist who's ever tried it.
L
Gréât stuff, we learned a lot more bout his background and the host let him speak freely, that is classy in my book 🫶
