Btw…Al, what happens when you see Luke at the clinic, he gives you a big bear hug like he always does…and asks you to join him in the bathroom: yes or no. 😏
What a super interesting and revealing look at this master musician....... this man is one of the main reasons I play guitar...... thank you so much for posting this
Al is the greatest guitar player and modern composer of all time and I’m extremely lucky to have met him a couple of times. No one has ever inspired me more. I recently was able to get my sunburst custom legend ovation signed by him and he even gave me his guitar pick after the show. There will never be another like him and how lucky we are to get a chance to still see him play!
What an incredible experience! Meeting a legend like Al Di Meola and having your guitar signed by him is unforgettable! It’s amazing how much he continues to inspire guitarists and fans around the world. 🎸✨
Fantastic Interview! AL IS THE MAN! Now worth mentioning Maestro Paco de Lucia technically wrote half of Mediterranian Sundance as it used a portion of Paco's RIO ANCHO released on his 1976 record Almoraima.
His points about Ringo not doing his songs were spot on. Laughed at Mac's non beatle stuff was kinda rough. Never knew the Gayle Moran story until now. He made it sound like Yoko- not in personality or musicality, but in fitting in with the group no matter what.
Fascinating interview. I remember well my first exposure to Al di Meola on British tv with Return to Forever. Still love that first album (vinyl). My father introduced me to Paco's music, but when Almoraima was released, I could tell that Paco was turning flamenco on its head, which satisfied my taste. I studied with one of Paco's students, who became a professor of flamenco. My wife's musical taste was pop & Elvis, but when I played Al's "Spanish Eye's," she was smitten. It's a track that she constantly asks me to play when friends are with us - she also loves playing the "A Day in the Life" album. Many thanks.
Thank you for sharing such a wonderful musical journey! It’s incredible how Al and Paco’s artistry has resonated across generations and tastes. The story of your wife connecting with “Spanish Eyes” shows the timeless appeal of Al’s work. So glad the interview could bring back these memories, and thank you for tuning in! 🎶
great interview with Al Di Meola I have a few of the early albums and was taken aback when i first heard Al play it was awsome.I love many different music genre and i play giutar some and can appreciate the players as i saw chet atkins years ago and he did a beatles set and was amazing. I just want to mention about George Harrison at the movie Bangladesh with Leon Russel the song beware of darkness really struck me when i saw it at the movie theater and every time i hear it i still get that feeling . God bless
Thank you so much for sharing that! It’s incredible how music like Al’s and artists like George Harrison can leave such a lasting impact. Beware of Darkness is truly a powerful song, and it’s amazing that you got to experience Chet Atkins live too-what a legend! 🙌 So glad you enjoyed the interview!
Wish his catalog would be revisited/ reissued I remember reading (many years ago) that he found a few extra tracks from Cielo and also that there was an alternate night/show from the Friday Night series.
Al's stories are incredible. He was about to talk about Tommy Emmannuel but the guy stepped on it Also stepped on his Mac story, but alot of gold about RTF and the breakup. I cant imagine Klugh playing with Chick.
Yes, this interviewer has a bit of 'lead character' syndrome - name dropping, inserting himself inappropriately etc. 'Dude! Weren't you paying attention? Al just answered that question like 3 minutes ago!'
Thanks for the feedback! Rob’s style is definitely passionate, and he enjoys sharing his insights when the conversation touches on specific topics he has experience with. That said, the interview with Tommy Emmanuel is coming around Christmas, so he saved some stories for Tommy to share during his own dopeYEAH Talk. I really like Al's relatively unknown collaboration with William Shatner on "So Am I." And on the other end of the spectrum, Al Di Meola and Yngwie Malmsteen on the same track, "The Sons of Anu."
Thanks for watching! Rob’s a huge fan, so he couldn’t help but share his excitement. 😊 But once Al dives in, the stories are definitely worth the wait! 🎸
Al DiMeola , was monumental in my life . I was just starting to form chords on my guitar. When I heard ELEGANT GYPSY! As a fan. Just to meet him would have been grand. Well I did meet him unannounced. He was Class a . Treated me with respect and took the time to be interested in our chance meeting. Great stand up guy. One hell of a musician. I've been following him for almost 50 years. Cheers

it's funny i always liked Land of the midnight sun the best just a personal thing it's not necessarily better technically or compositionally or anything like that theres so much longevity and layers to his career and still is .Of course elegant gypsy and casino were right there and other peeps favorite.I saw the early fusion stuff Palladium NYC ,then acoustic stuff at the blue note and luckily Al ,John and Paco at Carnegie hall . I missed Return to forever because of age .great memories , I love the video of Al playing with Mateo Mancuso recently that was very supportive of Al for the young fella .I have to hear the Winwood thing hope i can find that !
Thing is Elegant Gypsy sounded better live where Land of Midnight Sun is Very hard to pull off live so it's my favorite record by him. You are spot on!

He's always spoken of his second album as being superior to the debut, but that first album was like his Van Halen I.... it established him as an insanely intense and aggressive fusion guitarist, which didn't really exist before him.
