Moved to Denver in 2012, and my roommate was/still is a huge Batman fan. We decided to go to the midnight showing of the movie (him, his girlfriend, and I). My roommate wanted to go to the aurora theatre, because he always said you would get bed bugs at the downtown theatre, with it just being dirty. His girlfriend picked me up, and we were gonna meet him at the theatre when he got off work at his resturaunt. We got to the theatre, and pulled up early so we could get the drinks and food for when he got there, so we wouldn’t miss the movie. As we were walking up, my roommate texted saying “I just got stuck rolling silverware, and don’t want to miss a second of the movie, so just come to the Denver theatre”. So we went to the Denver theatre, watched the movie, and went home and passed out at like 3am. I was off the next day so I slept in late, and that was that. I woke up the next morning with 30 missed calls from my whole family. I still didn’t know what had happened, until I called them back and they said turn on the tv. Every year since then I’ve gotten the “photo memory from a year ago” Facebook notification which reads “Going with Nate to see Batman whoop some candy ass at midnight” and it always gives me chills. Because he had to roll silverware, we switched theatres last second. Life is wild
Edit: I keep seeing questions on what rolling silverware is, and realized the term might be know mainly if you worked as a server. You take a fork and a knife, roll it up in a napkin, and that's it. You do it before shifts and after to keep a nice stock of silverware at your ready.

@The world is mine in 2o21 / Not true. You can have some of the best parents in the world and still end up this way. And when i say best parents i mean the ones who discipline you when u are wrong and praise you for doing good. Sometimes ppl just are into violence or have mental health issues. You never know what someone has going on in their head. Look at most parents lately that are killed by their kids. It's bc they told their kids no they can't have something of go somewhere but these kids feel entitled lately and it's bc the government won't even let us raise or discipline or kids anymore. You got kids that constantly call the police on their parents for taking away their phone and in one case i saw they actually took the dad to jail and the mother got custody. It's crazy. So parents are afraid to be able to do what they think is best. So if anything blame the system. I remember going to juvenile for disrespecting my aunt who raised me or not opening my door, they took it off the hedges.

Last movie I ever saw in theaters, my best friend was there, he's okay physically but not mentally. We both went to midnight premiers in different states, we talked about how excited we were. He lost his phone in the stampede and I heard about the massacre as soon as I got home and spent all night thinking he was dead. His brother was injured and never able to play college baseball again and now is a dying alcoholic.

The most eerie thing about Jessica Redfield's story is that a month before the Dark Knight shooting, she was at the Toronto mall shooting and she wrote in her blog that she felt a very uneasy, sickening feeling which made her step outside of the food court at the mall. Seconds later the mass shooting happened in the food court. When she made her way outside after the mass shooting, that's when she tweeted about the guy dressed as Batman who was charging tourists to take pictures. A month later, she becomes the victim of another mass shooting at the premiere of a Batman movie over 1,000 miles away. If that is not Final Destination-like, I don't know what is. So tragic.

It's not fair to blame the therapist or the psychiatrist. You can tell from the story that the psychiatrist had a hunch that he was dangerous; she even had a colleague who specialized in violent potential talk with Holmes. The problem is that it's not that hard to fool behavioral health professionals if that's your goal. We aren't psychic and although we do our best to diagnose illness appropriately and watch for suicidal and homicidal risks, intelligent psychopaths can fool us too. People also need to understand that every state has different rules for what constitutes the criteria for a temporary Psychiatric hold on a person, and it is rarely as simple as the provider saying "let's hold that person for 3 days." My heart goes out to the doctor a day the therapist who were involved and I suspect blamed themselves unfairly. Nothing but suffering all around.

    • @fink7968
      @fink7968 3 ปีที่แล้ว +47

Yeah, schizophrenic people are statistically less violent than the general population, and are much more likely to be victimized. Violence is characterized by really high levels of emotion, which you see in Holmes notebook, whereas some of the most difficult and common schizophrenic symptoms are blunted emotions (flat affect) and depression. While the shadowy figures he describes are super common hallucination for those with the illness, he was extremely young to be experiencing them, making it even more unlikely. Makes me sad that people conflate such a difficult and painful illness with violence

This has definitely stayed in people’s heads. I remember when Joker came out everyone in the theater was enjoying the movie and everything was fine. With about maybe 2 minutes left to go in the movie, someone from the front of the theater gets up out of their seat and starts sprinting to the exit door that leads out to the parking lot. This freaked a lot of people in the theater out and you could hear people start to gasp and mumble to themselves. People started getting up and moving to the exit and many missed the last scene. Nothing ended up happening and that person who sprinted was probably scared, but unusual behavior spooked everyone out because there was a lot of speculation that a shooting would happen again, due to the Joker character

I worked as a maintenance supervisor/usher at a local movie theater years after this happened. But when the new Joker movie was coming out, the managers were not fucking around, and constantly stressed to the workers about the possiblity of a shooting. No costumes were allowed. We even gathered everybody to the projector room just to discuss methods to alert people to evacuate and how to block off neighboring theaters if possible so they wouldnt get shot up. The managers were even thinking about hiring local police officers to be on the grounds. One manager was working for the theaters when this event happened and was probably the most tense for the Joker release.
Thank the lord all that happened was the release of an astounding movie and nothing else. But the impact of this event alone has shifted the movie going experience on a whole new level its insane.

You can say they aren't cushy, but compared to prison, they are. I think we just need more therapists in prisons that can work with these people, but to allow him the luxury of being put in a psych ward. Nah. He should rot for what he did. You can defend and blame everybody but him all you want, but in the end it's his actions that have consequences. They failed him, and he failed himself. I'm sure the parent's of that little girl he killed would have differing views to you on allowing him into a psych ward. Even if he's treated and medicated, which I think would be a waste because even if he was, he'd never get out, he still needs to pay for his crimes. He wasted his own intelligence. He's a grown man. Even with mental illness, it is his own fault for the horrible act he committed. Not anybody else. He should be in prison. Yeah, his mental illness may explain why he did it, but it doesn't excuse it.

First and foremost, my condolences and sympathy for all those whom lost their life in this brutal attack. Second, this is a prime example of failure by the system: James Holmes told multiple people about the homicidal thoughts he struggled with, and time and time again people brushed it off. It’s a shame, because I feel with more intervention, maybe even just a brief stay at a psychiatric facility, could have stopped this massacre.

They simply just hate themselves, and eventually they take it all out on others in some attempt to relieve themselves of the pain. Really doubt that hapless medicines and a few more days locked away in a hospital prison could have made any difference for him.

I go back and forth with this - she called in another psychologist to assess him, and he also deemed him "okay" to leave. As disgusting as the killer is, he is obviously very intelligent and knew how to manipulate those psychological professionals. However, he specifically openly talked to them about his homicidal idealizations, however I too have kept things close to my chest from psychologist at first before establishing trust, and felt safe.
It's so easy to say what "should/could" have been done after the fact, but thoughts of self harm, or harming others is not as uncommon as people think. The majority of people just know not to act upon those thoughts, and that those thoughts are not your own - they're fleeting.

Psychiatrists are not mind readers. Even though he thought he was telling the doctor at the school what she needed to hear, she didn't seem to be just rubber stamping him and sending him on his way. She brought in a specialist, talked to the people who knew him, attempted to continue seeing him even as a non-student. She can't order involuntary holds willy-nilly and even if she did it's likely he would've done what he needed to do to get through his 72 hours and be released. Perhaps more would've been done if the doctor had talked to the ex-girlfriend, but I bet no one knew she existed or that they had been in recent contact. Should also note that even though he was more candid with the ex, no warning bells went off for her either, and she presumably knew him better than most people. Hindsight is always 20/20 and I'm sure the doctor has enough anguish already with her own woulda, shoulda, couldas

I know there are no real signs to someone being a mass-murderer, but that's kinda my point. What makes a kid switch from being a pretty normal, average teenager, to a guy that wants to viciously murder strangers in cold blood. It's as fascinating as it is mind-blowing.
Edit: To the few people that are so desperate to tell me that he's not normal or an average teen because he's slightly awkward or nervous and that they and their friends aren't - calm down there superstars and get a grip of yourselves. It's actually embarrassing and I promise you, you aren't half as "cool" as you think you are. I raised my hand and was taken with two other recruits in the backroom where we were told the news and location of the attack. My heart dropped to my feet when I heard Batman opening. I knew my brother 16 at the time would have been at a theater that night.
We were given a chance to call home, the first time since getting to boot camp, to check on our families. Luckily, despite being at the midnight opening, my brother was at a different theater. I remember my friends were too scared to go to movie theaters soon after this happened. I understood them. It's crazy how stuff like this happens when you're shopping, going to school or just trying to enjoy a movie in a theater.

Unfortunately I haven't seen many of this creator's videos recently, except I have 'binge watched' three in a row today...
And wow! absolutely brilliant work. So well researched and presented. Plenty of different facts about each case and none of that looping video and the same stuff being repeated over and over again.
He was good before, but he's surpassed himself with recent masterpieces.
    Thank you Ape Huncho.

I read through his journal for a Final in my psychology class while i was in college, the amount of thought he put into killing people still scares me.

He said he chose that theater over the several theaters closer to his house because of that theaters sign telling patrons that firearms were not permitted. This, obviously, made it less likely he would encounter resistance while attempting mass murder.
    This is kind of important
