The concept of letting players of other TCGs rate cards works so much better if the guest actually knows the basics of the game and this video is a good example of that.

Wrenn has done this (originally) six different times, and she's always named her treefolk companions by number. Of course we all know Wrenn and Six, the most recent Innistrad story saw her retire Six to the Ulvenwald, where she and Teferi had found Seven, her next tree companion. Finally, as a means to defeat the Phyrexians, Wrenn and Seven travel to New Phyrexia. Unfortunately, a compleated Nissa destroys and kills Seven, leaving Wrenn without a tree and she was slowly dying. Wrenn decided to sacrifice herself and bonded with the world tree Realmbreaker, which the Phyrexians were using to invade the Multiverse. Of course, this card isn't named "Wrenn and Eight" but Wrenn does call the tree Eight as she is sacrificing herself to bring the forces of Zhalfir to New Phyrexia to fight.
It was a really cool story beat too. Shame the card is so underwhelming. I don't even need it to be super competitive as long as it felt strong and powerful as the lore implied. Same with Elspeth. And then Chandra is the big splashy Planeswalker of the set for some reason. Nothing against Chandra but she wasn't the focus of that story.

It's funny MBT arrived at Amalia being playable by comparing it to Merfolk Branchwalker and reasoning that if the latter was playable the former was as well without ever touching on the fact that the reason Branchwalker was playable in standard was as part of a package involving Wildgrowth Walker (and ultimately a large part of Amalia's playability is owed to its synergy with WW as well)

To be fair MTB isn't good at YGO, why would ever think he's good at a real card game?
After lotr released wrenn was completely busted in alchemy, games were much slower due to the prevalence of bowmaster and any way to draw cards that got around bowmasters became extremely valuable as well. Wrenn fits very well into exactly that scenario not to mention that the other greatest card ever to be printed, delighted halfling, forced you into wrenns color anyway. Most games wouldnt see a wrenn ulti but many matchups, especially the mirror, did get to them reasonably often.
I love MBT as a guest. It's fun to have someone get this half-context and I find those "HE IS SO CLOSE!" moments with Indominatable Creativity a lot of fun.
One important thing to note with Planeswalkers in the context of current Magic however is the way removal is handled currently. Blue has 2 Mana Drains in No More Lies and Make Disappear. Should a prominent Planeswalker ever arise again then Black can easily just Bitter Downfall it and if a Planeswalker doesn't affect the board vs. the red decks it will just get run over or ignored. Its why The Wandering Emperor and Kaito Shizuki are like the two Planeswalkers that see consistent play. They are easily able to force 2 effect activations before dying.
Demonic Bargain just reads "remember that broken effect?" but you bought it off Temu.
EDIT: I can't believe that Wrenn and Realmbreaker isn't good, but at the same time if the effects were better...

The old rule still applies it seems: a Walker needs to immediately impact the board, and/or have a way to protect themself.
I'm not sure if I should be surprised or not Joseph caught how good Lorien Revealed's islandcycling was. Most MTG players didn't catch that during spoiler season and it wasn't until they played with it that most people caught it
Not following older formats much, I didn't fully understand until Dimir Lurrus in Timeless. It was that deck that showed me "ohhh, I see why Mystic Sanctuary is banned in Modern, this is a 9/10 annoyance to play against"

Somebody tell MBT that Jund is still a thing, but it plays almost none of the og cards to the point that the version he's familiar with is commonly known as "boomer jund".
Like, Tarmogoyf and Dark Confidant are considered very slow and inefficient in today's meta.
Is Ponza still a thing at all in Modern? I was a diehard Ponza player, but I could easily see it being a deck that just faded away

Wotc generally tries to frustrate lock out effects as much as possible. It is still possible to make stax/land destruction/prison whatever work, but it is not at a competitive level in the modern formats.

I really enjoyed this because it’s one of the rare times both players can really discuss both Yugioh AND MTG. Generally players only understand one game or only one of the players can draw parallels.

To be fair to MBT, wrenn and realmbreaker isn't bad. It's just that green has been the weakest color in standard since it's been printed, and it's not strong enough to be playing G for by itself. Then conbine that with it being *kinda* a GB card (typically its GBx decks that want a card like WnR), and B has arguably the best 3s in standard?
It would not be hard (and still could happen) for WnR to be an all-star in a deck. It's not bad on rate, just... doesn't line up with the format.
If it untapped the land or got any permanent from the graveyard it would be insane 😅

@@TheOneJameYT it feels a bit like you're missing what I'm saying. It's worse than the alternatives in BG decks. Other G decks don't exist right now that might want a value 3 drop like this. If they did (or if they do in the future), then WnR could easily see play. It's only a "bad card" in the context of having no home, not in the context of the rate being wrong. Those are two separate things that I think are useful to talk about differently. Cards without a home can easily slot from seeing no play to seeing tons of play with a slight shift. Cards that are bad on rate have little to no chance to see play.

Wrenn and Realmbreaker isn't "really bad", it's very medium. I just looked it up and it's done a few things, but doesn't see a ton of play. I think calling it really bad is underselling it a lot

I'd say they look more distressed or in pain. And combined with the blue magic-y swirls, it looks like they are being tortured somehow.
I guess the swirls are supposed to be the blindfolds, but those are never described as magical.
I am glad that Wrenn wasn't as strong as MBT hoped because that makes it less expensive for me to use in my commander deck, 5c color fixing moment

Na you can absolutely rate cards for their effectiveness in Commander. “Every card is good in the right deck” is a bit of fairy tale from 10 years ago at this point
Erm...yeah...just saying "Wrenn and Liliana are not played" is one thing, not explaining that the reason isn't that the cards aren't good anymore, but simply because how powercrept plainswalker removal is, is another. Wrenn dies to literally any B/W removal spell and Liliana costs 3, dies to removal and doesn't do anything a Sheoldred Edict doesn't do (which, let's be real, Liliana generally is a worse Shelly's Edict against most aggro/midrange decks).
Is it weird that, as a MBT viewer, I really want Joseph to fail miserably in this video? He's been lowkey lording it over the rest of the Yugists that he knows how to play Magic and used to be good at it for YEARS, and I will obtain significant schadenfreude if he gets absolutely destroyed.

When MBT asked you, "It's not being played?" saying "No..." *four second pause* "...it's niche in the side board," was probably too misdirecting. Saying instead, "She is, and is even topping majors, but she's almost entirely in the sideboard," would have been less misdirecting AND still probably would have broken poor MintyBlueTang's mind.

In standard, I think Amalia is good enough to see play in a white-black lifegain deck even without wildgrowth walker. From that, I'd argue that MBT is right that Amalia is a good card even if you never trigger the destruction ability. Of course, wildgrowth walker takes this from a good-decent card to a game winning combo piece.

Tbh, calling Wrenn not good is a bit harsh, imo. It doesn't fit all decks, but it can be powerful in the right ones. Fixing mana, getting a decent body and enabling graveyard shenanigans for 3 mana is good enough to play on turn 4+, in my book.

I love Demonic Bargain so much in theory, I think its drawback is a really cool way of doing it, but I wish it had literally any sort of (realistic) advantage over Grim Tutor to make it a worthwhile alternative. Make it 2 mana or make it an Instant, something like that to justify including it. Speaking as a Commander player of course, as it stands now there isn't really a reason to use it. It makes me a little sad, seems like a missed design opportunity to me.
MBT in shambles after learning rotation has failed him. Not that rotation preventing power creep entirely, or at least I hope it wasn't since magic has had power creep for basically its whole life. Rather, that rotation should slow down the process of power creep. Or I've completely missed his point of wanting rotation in yugioh.
Yugioh basically already has rotation because they ban an archetype then print a new busted one 🤣
MtG rotation worked to curtail powercreep for 25 years. Powercreep in MtG was a conscious decision made in 2019 and is owed mostly to the Hasbro acquisition and the favourite format switching from standard to commander.
The thing that bugs me about Lórien Revealed is that it gets you an Island, when Lórien is, famously, a forest.
And it's not like Lord of the Rings doesn't have islands. Númenor, Tol Eressëa. They had options!

13:10 I think the other important thing of note here as well is that in Yu-Gi-Oh, searching ANY card give you a way to crack open the entire turn because YGO's resource system is fucked. In the case of THIS card, you're spending three mana to pick up a card you'll probably still have to pay the costs of the card you search so you're really not seeing use out of this card as early as you need in the faster-paced formats like vintage or legacy where there are better alternatives already. The only possible way this card could see play is if you exile some insane card that benefits you from being exiled, but being mill that's still a crapshoot too.
Ill just say for the record wrenn probably isn't good in most decks typically anything constructed. But in in brawl or commander. She is fire. She excels in GY strategies. If that minus ability ever happens you will literally win the game. I play this in my sidisi zombie deck and my windgrace lands deck. She is OP. The opponent try's so hard to stop me from ultimating

Surprised you don’t mention commander because that’s where a lot of these cards get played and still have high prices....well some of them
demonic bargain is very interesting and the best point of comparison i think is read the bones. unlike yugioh, getting the "one perfect card" is not a 1 card starter into full combo nor is it 1 card floodgate that auto wins the game. that one card is balanced to be fair even when hard drawn and that means tutoring in 60 card constructed magic is not completely busted. you spent the 3 mana to do nothing but get the card you want. And then what? can you cast the card? 1 perfect card doesn't win the game in magic. maybe you want sheoldred ideally but you don't need exactly sheoldred and maybe you just need to hit those god damn lands drops. so i think scry 2 draw 2 is generally a better effect than tutor 1. also i dont think read the bones is pioneer staple either but im almost certain it was standard playable.
as for the exile 13, the way i see it is that attaching an exile 13 means about 25% chance any single one of card you want to search for is gone. u should have about 50 cards turn 3 if u cast it on curve. lower if you cast it later making it even worse. but it think it would still be fine it if didnt cost 3. ofc you probably run cards at more than 1 copy if you want to see it but in that case why not just scry and draw cards and fill ur deck with good cards?

i disagree on wren. there's a great golgari build that synergizes with it really well. i have gotten the -7 out more times than i can count, this card won the game for me.
So Wrenn's thing is that when they planeswalked the tree they were attached to got disintegrated, that's why it was Six and Seven, those were their 6th and 7th trees. This is Wrenn paired with Realmbreaker.
Maybe Wrenn and Realm isnt the best in standard but with vorinclex and doubling season she starts with 8 loyalty and shes great in landfall and land creature decks
As a blue player, when mbt said lorean is just an island therefore it's busted, I felt that in my soul. Island is the most busted card in mtg
MBT doesn't need to be on all the time, but his reactions to new cards is pretty great.

As a commander player I can tell you not every card can be good in commander. Loren revealed is a great example never seen it played or even talked about

I'm glad the last deck I played was mirari's wake back in 7'th I managed to dodge all the power creep.
I'd love to see more of MBT. He's easily one of the best Yugioh content creators thanks to his diverse background in card games. It offers a really unique perspective I feel is lacking in the Yugioh community. As someone who got into Yugioh in the past 2 years with Master Duel, it was really shocking to me just how close-minded and at many times bull-headed the Yugioh community can be about any other card game.
