Since I joined the guitar community years ago I noticed a group of players who constantly harp on how shredding and playing a million notes at lightspeed has no soul or feel blah blah blah.

Doc Watson, Norman Blake, Tony Rice, David Grissman, Alison Krauss, Mark O'connor, Sam Bush, Rhonda Vincent, the list goes on and on, created multiple generations of ppl like us (me) that want to perfect the bluegrass craft and keep it alive. I was taught to dance with who brought you to the party. Those men/women created monsters in a lot of us. These 2 young men are prime examples! Im thankful for it.
If you've never been to a bluegrass festival please make it a priority, once covid is over and we return to normal, to seek one out and attend. Even if you're not into that kind of music, go anyway. Some of the nicest ppl on earth and the best musicians on the planet are there. Down to earth, common folk, of all ages wanting the bluegrass legacy to live on forever.

I read a lot of comments on here talking about how impossible this looks and sounds or that it's sped up. It's not sped up I've seen both these guys play this fast numerous times. Jake didn't start it as fast as it ended Trey sped up when he started his first solo. Don't let this discourage any of you, I'm getting ready to turn 63 and I play this fast and clean after 50 years of flatpicking. I play along with it and play both of their solos. I'm not saying this to brag none of you know me but I say it to tell you that with practice it's amazing what you can accomplish. I've taught lots of people to flatpick over the years and one of the biggest stumbling blocks is people not trusting practice. Practice never fails to make you better. Practice always, always works. If you want to play this fast you must practice playing this fast. Use a metronome and gradually increase it, I promise it works if you work on it.

I noticed the pace pick up during Trey's break. While impressive, speed is only a part of bluegrass. But, once you attain it, it makes playing slower stuff that much easier and hopefully, tastier too. I'm 70 and play a D-35 with medium strings. Have for a long time. Some of the most memorable times I've had have been when putting notes around the melody that add and embellish the tune. One jam, a girl I never met before was standing near me as I did 'fills' to a tune. After I finished, she said, "That was really nice", I said thanks, and just kept playing. As you say, practice is so important and a good guitar/instrument will inspire you to pick it up and pick. I've kicked myself forever for not buying a Santa Cruz D-18 style guitar that I played in a store years ago. I didn't have $2500 handy, but it really sang to me. I know someone, somewhere has this guitar in their room and plays it regularly. That someone was almost me, but hey, it didn't happen.
