@@Guitargate So glad you did a video featuring Trey. I've been listening to him for a *long* time and love what he does. His moves over changes are imitable and his picking is not just clean in the usual bluegrass picker way; Trey gets an insane level of articulation and note separation at high speed. And he plays with 13s on the box! Also, as a dobro player myself, Trey's work with Rob Ickes is magic.
Michael this absolutely broke my brain but in the best way. Not sure I've seen you handle an acoustic like that! When Trey hit that part with the insane fast passage and then you just kicked it right out - plus how you took his incredibly fluid and playing and broke it down step by step. Incredible!
The way he plays off other notes in the scale, like the 2nd degree becoming the 9th, adding a whole new layer of tension and release. It’s like he’s painting with sound, every stroke deliberate yet infused with raw, spontaneous energy. That 9th, acting as the 5th’s fifth, it’s not just a note-it’s a revelation, a hidden gem that reshapes the entire harmonic landscape. It’s as if he’s peeling back the layers of the blues itself, revealing its core and then rebuilding it right before your eyes, only to tear it down and reconstruct it again, each time more beautiful and complex than before. This isn’t just a guitar lesson; it’s a full-on immersion into the very essence of blues music, a deep dive into the soul of the genre that leaves you breathless and craving more. Every chord, every note, every subtle bend of a string-it’s a lesson in musical storytelling, a narrative that speaks to the heart, the mind, and the soul. Watching this unfold, my brain isn’t just working; it’s dancing, wrestling, and ultimately, celebrating the sheer brilliance of what’s unfolding. This, right here, is the pinnacle of musical mastery. And I’m just honored to have witnessed it.
@@worldcitizen9202 Speaking of bluegrass style flatpickers, right? I’ve always been partial to Bryan Sutton myself. But Trey and all those top guys are amazing. Beyond my comprehension.
Your brain is hearing the chords being played under the solo, even though there's nobody actually playing chords. I happened to be looking away when he got to that first instrumental section and didn't notice he was the only one in the room until I looked back over.
Trey can make about anything sound like a cannon. Amazing how much volume he gets and it’s still fast, clean and precise. Amazes me when he pulls out a small body or Harmony and it sounds like it’s the loudest guitar ever made. Plus the voice on top of it!
Awesome video! Thanks for this great introduction to Trey Hensley! More inspiration to work on those fundamentals you were teaching us down in Nashville.
Micheal, I really enjoy all the stuff you do!! Featuring Trey is a class act! He’s a brilliant player! I’ve been watching him for a couple years to. He’s a very intimidating player to try to learn some of his chops very fast, and you, Michael, oh, you’re no slouch either my friend! Thanks for always doing such great videos. I’ve been following you for a while.!
Trey is the man. I first heard his Blue Railroad Train cover with Rob Ickes playing slide with him. Theres a video of him as a kid little kid playing at the Grand Ole Opry with Earle Scruggs and Marty Stuart. So he has been at at it his whole life.
Trey is a beast on both guitar and vocal. The most remarkable thing to me is how he keeps the flow and groove going without losing a beat or slowing down for the entire song, whether he’s playing rhythm with a light touch or incredible inventive and melodic lead with a driving force. That’s very difficult.
Only a few come close to Trey's pure ability...and you can find collaborations with them all! His voice was my 1st hook...what followed is nothing but pure gold. He and Rob Ickes are the best "do not miss" duo that will ever roll through your area! Your jaw will hurt for days...no different than a night with Derek Trucks!
I had the pleasure of meeting Trey at the Winfield bluegrass festival, he's such a nice guy and very humble. He would do a break ( solo) and the crowd would cheer and he acted almost embarrassed.
I just wok up to this video at my cabin up north, sitting drinking coffee on my porch overlooking the small river, two weeping willows on each end of the bank, I have to say this is pretty perfect
The II V I outline section has a fair bit in common with Fun Ranch Boogie by Albert Lee. Trey is so great and I’m grateful you’ve featured him here. He also played the solo straight at the end of the solo section, like Luther did, which is cool as even though it’s simpler than everything else he did, it’s not boring and that’s him being respectful to the origins of the music
As a non-guitar player or even musician in general you may as well be speaking Albanian to me, but I'm finding your videos hella interesting all the same, and your enthusiasm is kinda infectious haha!!
Also interesting would be to see what Michael had to say about Estas Tonne's Internal Flight. Guys, just bomb Guitar Gate with the album video (I'm sure he will find some live videos, if needed) 👌
Love this playing but what I’d really like to know is how these guys, often country dudes get such a natural acoustic sound live. No piezo quack, decent volume, good tone.
Cool video. Just running across this channel and as a guitar player and fan of all sorts of guitar content it's interesting content. I have to say though, I was surprised you don't have any videos on Paco De Lucia. He's a monster of guitar who some of the "greats" consider one of the greatest. Anyway, would be cool to see a reaction to some of his pieces. The work he did together with al di meola, john mclaughlin and larry coryell is noteworthy as he fused his Flamenco style w/ their jazz playing in the late 70s and early 80s. It's amazing stuff.
I recently had the opportunity to hear Trey and Rob Ickes when they opened for Tommy Emmanuel at The Cascade Theatre in Redding, CA, last March. I knew Ickes but had never heard of Trey Hensley, and I doubt many in the audience were familiar with him. We all left as major believers in his talent. His playing was impeccable, and as you point out, his vocals were amazing. Not many pickers can share a stage with Tommy and come off looking good, but Trey certainly did. My only complaint was that the volume in their opening set was simply far too loud, to the point that we couldn't actually make out the notes they were playing. Tommy's volume was perfect, but Trey and Rob's was overdriven to distortion levels. This was the common complaint in the local reviews of the show, but everyone acknowledged Trey's abilities and talent. Of course, Rob is a long-time fan favorite and a consummate pro.
Hey Michael…man, this is so cool! Thank you so much for all the kind words! I really appreciate it!! And I hope we can pick a few soon!
Dude it’s my pleasure & I’d love to brother!
Magic of sharing amazing music and uniting 2 great talents
Absolutely brilliant! ❤
Trey, you are such a class act, man, and an inspiration to so many of us pickers.

I know right. It is impossible. There simply is no better acoustic guitar player period

Trey does it all with a flatpick....no hybrid pickin! Incredible talent!!
100%. I saw him last year touring with Jorma Kakounen. Outstanding player and singer.
%100, trey is a wildly good guitar player. My absolute favorite acoustic player, and his singing is on point too.
That shirt.... Is my life.
Ever heard ZACH TOP?? Dude is climbing fast.....excellent player!
Agree. Zach is more mainstream, but is a wonderful player. Not in Trey's class, but few are.

Mr. Hensley is the absolute man. Been following him for a couple years. Such a clean picker
Just a flat out beast! One of the best instagrams out there too!
Yes absolutey! Child prodigy whos always pushing and perfecting his craft

Trey is great! Amazing video thank you both!🎵🎵😎🎸
I'll be seeing Trey at Walnut Valley Festival in September! He is great.
I had the pleasure of meeting Trey at the Winfield bluegrass festival, he's such a nice guy and very humble. He would do a break ( solo) and the crowd would cheer and he acted almost embarrassed.
Combined with his vocals he is one of the best out there right now!
Love Trey and you just know he’s a good guy and regular responds to my comments
This was a fun one. Happy to meet Mr. Hensley, and I'm newly intrigued with the lyrics of "Big River."
Sick! Nice to be introduced to this guy, he's great! And nice breakdown of the song too 😀
Random pop up on my feed. Subs to both of you. Those riffs SMOKED.. thanks mate
Trey is unreal. I've been following him for quite a while... very impressive.

Life is good 🤙🏽
Exactly.
So cool to see someone getting just as emotional and intrigued by the same video. Loved this man.
Beautiful clean audio brother
Thank you
Trey's tribute to Tom Petty after his passing was incredible. The video where he played his own version of Crawling back to you. Unbelievable.
Reminds me a little of Tony Rice…super clean. Appreciate this sir 🫡
Michael, you’re on my guitar Mt. Rushmore. You’re a damn good player! Being able to break down something by ear is a skill I wish I had better honed.
Highly recommend Jake Workman, Jake Eddy, and Cody Kilby if you like Trey. Great stuff!

Am I wrong for wanting to see him and Billy Strings do a duet?
No you’re absolutely not my friend
If wanting that is wrong then I don't wanna be right
OMG that would be frekin AWESOME!
It will happen, just be patient. :)
Michael, this was awesome! I’d love to see you break out the acoustic a little more. Or better yet, an flatpicking course on Guitargate?
Gawd he sounds a lot like Randy Travis. Excellent!
Seen Trey couple of times, up close , he is top notch !
TREY HENSLEYS THE MAN!❤
I followed him since the opry, love his playing and voice.

One of my favorite players and singers very humble too
My favourite ever acoustic player is the mighty Kelly Joe Phelps.
RIP brother.
He’s my favorite too

Most play into a mic and are not plugged in.
It’s a sin to sleep on Trey. He’s the current top dog IMO.
Trey is an absolute GEM from right here in good ole East Tennessee! 👏🏼
My favorite too, love trey
You need to watch Brian Sutton.
No kidding!
Absolutely
Oh my God that VOICE!!
He’s the best. He’s so technical it’s ridiculous!
thankyou! this is very helpful and inspiring
Really sharp, his tones are so unique and dense. I like it. Thanks for sharing! 👴
this is top freaking notch teaching
Can you really have just one favorite it the world of acoustic masters? I cannot.
I picked up my guitar as soon as I seen this video also it's amazing
shout out for the tone on that martin
II-V patterns can be really cool. Really can open up a new bag of tricks. You can hear them a lot in rockabilly too.
This is really cool! Trey is amazing!

He’s a monster. Apparently Ritchie Blackmore thinks so too. 🔥
I gotta say it again. How awesome!!!!
Yep Trey is scary good
Michael great video as always - but I’m lusting over that ball cap - please a link for us old dh’s
Hey Michael great vid.
Quick question about your Taylor or rather Taylor v Martin...which would be best for a claw style finger picker?
He puts me in mind of Tommy Emmanuel.....and I can't think of a greater complement.
Atop the performance, the explanation is top-notch, man.
What model Taylor is that? Looks and sounds great!
I want to know this too! I need one!
Love the shirt!
Yes -acoustic after so many episodes!!!
What model is that Taylor and what are you playing through? Love the bottom end in that guitar
You're no slouch yourself!
"coming from that world where it is simple" ... say no more ... simple is THE BEST
Love the shirt.
Fahey Kottke and Lang is a super fine album from the 70s . Esp Fahey song on it called In Christ There Is No East or West.
Wow. Thanks for sharing. !!!!!!!
I was going to go to bed, but I guess now I'm doing a deep dive on Trey... thanks a lot! :)

I could not find his TH-cam channel?! Any hints?!!

Great one, you should also definitely Check Out *Corey Heuvel*

Fun fact. Trey played for Johnny an June cash at her final birthday party when he was young, and he also played the opry at 12.
There’s a video of this guy with Mart Stuart when he was about ten years old. They were on the Oprah I think.
Him and Jake Workman together is one of those videos i always find myself going back to
Been listening to alot of Trey and my fav now Jake Workman 🎸 🎶 ❤️
