In order to be at your best in the studio and live, you must internalize the different mindsets and approaches to both. It's still YOUR VOICE, but how you treat it and what you do with it are world's apart. Join Periphery's Spencer Sotelo as we discuss the vocal saving, creativity boosting lessons he's learned about treating these two animals VERY differently!
What Spencer did on Satellites will be immortalised for sure.
Holy shit Satellites is so good
I am SUCH a huge fan of the Spencer content.
E: Oh my good god, it opened with a Backstreet Boys duet
YES YES :)
Hehehe, yes, tender...
I'm an extremely insecure person in general and all of those insecurities intensify when I'm on stage
Hearing a pro say that they have it too and they still push through and go for it even if they mess it up is incredibly encouraging
Thank you so much guys, you have no idea how much you've helped me
You should check out the Wim Hoff breathing technique. You can do it anywhere in minutes and it melts anxiety!
@@o-REDBEARD-o Thanks, I'll be sure to check that out later!
I am a very socially anxious person and this video definitely helps me feel better too.
I've never played a show but I imagine its terrifying to have a crowd staring at you expecting a performance.
I definitely feel the holding yourself to unrealistic standards; I feel like I'm going to die of embarrassment / shame if I do a wrong note in front of someone and hearing that that is preferred as long as you really go for it with energy and passion is relieving and awesome. I never thought about it but I'd rather see that too.
I have all the same feelings, but I’m much more comfortable on stage when I’m behind my drum kit. I can’t imagine singing front and center, so huge props to all you guys who do it!
@@fromallsides I used to tilt my 2 front crashes a little bit extra, for this very reason, ha!
Saw periphery in Philly on tour with Animals as Leaders. Spencer hit a scream that was so loud it shook the venue. It was such an awesome vocal performance, he's incredibly talented
Spencer is incredible. One of my favorite all time singers in one of my all time favorite bands. Periphery is amazing.
One of the biggest things that made me interested in the course is being a huge Periphery fan, and a big fan of how Chris has broken things down in digestible, no-nonsense explanations. When Spencer said in the previous video that he used to drive to work and sing to his favorite songs because it was a place of comfort I was blown away because I have been using "Garden In The Bones" to practice improving my screaming for the past year since I live in a tiny apartment with kids and a wife. My car and I-35 is where I can turn it to 11 and test my vocal skill and progress. Here's the kicker - I already have a metal album out where I'm utilizing screams and instantly from these videos learned ways to improve. Much like Spencer, I didn't really have crazy formal training until... well... now! I've learned I'm doing a lot of things that can and will hurt my voice (like jumping right into screaming instead of warming up), but also learned so much already about my breaking point I can safely hit notes and last much longer due to less vocal strain.
Thanks Spencer, and thanks Chris! I can tell y'all are really excited to work with each other because it shows in the collaboration.
It does make me wonder how cool it'd be if there were ever a point where you'd consider doing a "from rags to riches vocal transformation" where you take someone like myself who has some experience but much to learn and then just document their path through these same types of videos. Of course, that's only a fun thought that I'd love to see, but I find value in seeing what to, and what not to do, when transforming.
Thanks so much for the background and nice comment! I've thought about doing that many times. I think it's just a matter of time that the'll be a 'rags to riches' type series! : )
@@chrisliepe You're very welcome. Glad I stumbled upon your channel. Feel free to invite me as your first transformation! :D
Shoutout to another person on i35 screaming and singing in their car besides me
I am the same I have spent an uncountable amount of hours practicing in the car, car time is practice time to me, I've never really had anywhere else where I could do it or at least feel comfortable doing it. And just doing that is how I started learning in like 2011, I never had anybody teach me anything at all, and never really was around anybody who could. I've always felt great about my screams but nowadays I'm wishing I could try some pro lessons for cleans, I feel like it may be necessary for me to become confident in that area. Videos like this existing are a big help to me, only place I've ever had access to advanced vocal knowledge.
I'm not a singer but I'm a huge Periphery fan. I'm so stoked you got this series and course going.
This is incredible, man I’d love to see an M. Shadows series. The contrast between that guy’s calm speaking in interviews and his godlike power on stage has always awed me.
That one dislike is Chris Barretto
haha
Hahaha. That's hilarious
So much respect for Spencer.
I found the concept of "going for the hard note" even if you're uncertain about if you're gonna pull it off is interesting. When it comes to metal shows with a really intense energy, it's deffo true that crowd will not care if you do a duff note, providing the majority of the show is killer.
BUT having worked in wedding and function live work the pressure to be vocally perfect is very different. One bad note could mean never being hired again, it's the reality of the industry. Especially when you're an acoustic set up and there are no walls of distorted guitars and drums to hide behind or cover up imperfections.
Chris, free warm-ups from you and Spencer were the best thing of my latest few months! I realized that I used to overcompress my voice and after the warm-up, being ready to try screaming (even though I can’t hold a scream for more than half a second yet), my mixed voice becomes so much easier to do!
I seriously can't name a more skilled metal vocalist than Spencer. He can do cleans he can do the raawwwrrr-raaawrrrr stuff. All while having a very powerful voice and having good pitch and amazing range. You liking his vocal timbre is a subject thing but his vocal skills are objectively amazing.
I never realizedhow awesome of a person Spencer is! I’m like blown away. Brutally honest and eager to be, Reflecting and looking for every possible thing that goes on the he can share with us… I won’t name names but I think certain people hold back in interviews like this sometimes, not him. Dude is flipping awesome! Definitely going to see Periphery next time they’re in town! this vid was 🔥! And the warm-up routine!…. thank you for them!
Also, these are the type of interviews that are some of my favorite, they get me so fired, on the edge of my seat the whole time🤣
I agree!!!!
More interviews and guests coming soon on the channel for sure!
What a great conversation. Not all musicians have the ability to articulate what they're doing like Spencer does. I'll be saving this one to rewatch whenever I need a technique refresher.
This is super cool. Spencer is under appreciated, and it’s great to hear him get into how he does what he does.
I am beyond excited for this!
Spencer writes super difficult shit. Watch either live Reptile performance that comes up in youtube and it is mind blowing. I feel like "failing" to him is probably just imperfections. His live performance videos are truly impressive.
I love this idea of “acting” being presented because it’s something I’ve been thinking of recently and I’ve been dying to ask some of my favorite vocalists if they can relate singing to “acting” because there’s just this sort of connection I started thinking about that made sense. Now I know that this is basically 100% how you’ve gotta think about singing/screaming, you’re acting, putting on a show 🤘🏻
Satellites is my favorite song ever
Spencer is definitely one of the best singers out there. I was really impressed when I saw Periphery live in Vancouver a couple years ago, even though I have watched many live videos where he sings even better than the record... I can't wait to see Periphery live again 🤘
Get Dan Tompkins on here! He’s incredible live.
He should be on teachable
Yeah he definitely sets the platinum standard in this genre.
LOVE me some Periphery. Spencer is a machine
I love that you can really tell how engaged you are with your guest Chris! So inspiring to see how you’re burning for your craft!
I speak Spanish and I really appreciate that you put subtitles
Not even 10 seconds into the video and my ears have been BLESSED lol xD NEED MOAR!!!
He put on an amazing show even with “no voice” last time I saw him in Brooklyn right before covid hit. He never disappoints! He’s a beast!❤️
Yes the show with Plini!!! He is wasn’t even supposed to perform and then he came out during Reptile and it was such a moment. This was the last pre-covid show moment and I cherish it lol
I am not a fan of metal screaming, but I learned a lot from watching Spencer Sotelo's videos with Chris Liepe. Thanks to you both. And The Used song "A Box Full of Sharp Objects" is really cool.
I’ve loved this series!
Such a good video and you did a great job moderating this! Subbed and I look forward to seeing what else you have!
yeah so excited for the content with Spencer, one of the bestest vocal teachers combined with the guy I've been listening to for years and years lol. such an amazing combo, big thanks to you two. been super inspired and dedicated with the "dying cat" warm up routine every day
I needed this video in my life
I'm going to watch this again
Your taste in music alone makes you my favorite vocal coach. 🤘
You guys flow so well together! I love it!
It's great to see talented people work together to make something greater than the sum of their parts.
Amazing value in this videos with Spencer dude, thank you!
Beautiful interview 👍🏼💕
Joe Duplantier of Gojira seems to have the same mindset, pushes himself hard in the studio and screams with "improper" technique and sings with better technique live.
Same with Matt Heafy from Trivium
Phil Anselmo in the late Pantera days seemed to the exact opposite😂
So, thanks for this. I am going to check It...
Very interesting ! Thanks to you both.
Spencer is the best metal vocalist of this era period.
I agree
Greg Puciato
@@user-eo1rm3eb6c Greg is definately awesome! both are awesome in there own ways!
Debatable just because there's so many incredibly talented vocalists now
Remember way long time ago before you guys were huge playing a little rando show at the compound here in ABQ NM with darkest hour. Been a fan ever since! Was rad seeing you guys again recently at the el Rey. Awesome show, if Spencer didn’t have that I’m about to absolutely run on these mugs look on his face I would have at least waved as I passed. My wife unaware hey isn’t the the guy we passed on the way in 😂😂😂
I’m so happy you guys are doing this.
Oh man, starting with back street boys.
That is tight. Such an incredible group of real singers.
🔥
Chris Liepe on the next Periphery album confirmed!
Backstreet boys. Big pp energy there bros!
Great insights from a huge vocalist!!! This is awesome
I love that Spencer’s nails are painted gold
needed this video!!! cant wait to see it
much love from spain
For me, it’s Spencer’s unique choice of melody progressions and scales that hooks me.
One of my absolute favourites is 4 mins 9 secs in Follow Your Ghost - “The corpse will swing in all it’s glory…” that whole section is just something else.
I wish I knew more about music theory so I could unpick what makes that so special.
I definitely wanna try his total destruction warm up. I had melissa cross zen of screaming and that was ok. I've been using this 7 minute warm up app that I downloaded for free, it's not bad. I wanna try total destruction
Ya, definitely give it a try!! More to come as well!
What a great guy!
Really great video, thank you both!
Opening the video with "I Want It That Way"
Love Spencer met him in a record shop in Philly in 2019 before a show!
This was absolute gold! Such good advice here!
Amo sus videos pero me encantaría que tengan traducción. Los amo a los dos 💚
These videos are awesome! Man I can't wait to see Periphery again! Hopefully for a Periphery V tour 🙏🙏
I can't wait to meet him
He's even better live, gotta see late 2019. Way more intense!, the screams I mean.
I agree I have seen him 3 times always amazing
About going for it live, I 100% would rather see anyone really go for it and fail rather than hold themselves back. Never thought of this before, but I thought it was really a cool idea. Well said!
Same. I didn't either. But yeah I'd rather see someone have the energy and passion just going for it.
And as also a vocalist I feel like it would even be cool to see my favorite vocalists that inspired me hit a bad note cause I'll feel better about not being able to perform perfect every time myself x) - definitely feel the holding yourself to unrealistic standards; I feel like I'm going to die of embarrassment / shame if I do a wrong note in front of someone.
@@codywinter4818 I feel like the best performances I've seen have felt so organic. When an artist bears their soul that's when you can really feel it. I'm not trying to see a robot up there. I think seeing the humanity in one of your favorite artists is exactly what you want.
I miss going to shows so much. Last show I went to before covid was periphery in dallas. Fucking stellar show. Love seeing them as much as I can.
Man... You rock Spencer. I've always been way to critical of myself and embarrassed when I make a mistake. And most of the time I'm the only person counting those. Being self conscious and concerned about how other people view my vocals is literally the ONLY thing holding me back. I've been practicing at work to try and break this(with periphery of course) and the other night, one of my coworkers actually said "Dude, what the hell are you doing HERE? You need to go start a band or start doing TH-cam or something". It's a real struggle.
Was never a huge fan on Periphery (nothing bad, just not for me) but I do like this dudes approach to signing/screaming. Great video!
Yujuuu spencer sotelo is a monster singer and very singular
This is gold. Thank you.
Thank you for this video, my wednesday morning is saved!
I need a Video like this with Sam Carter, dude is a beast live and in the Studio but since Architects rely heavily on doubles the live versions always have a very different character
Ya, that would be very different for sure with Sam... Amazing though!!
Didn't even watch the video yet, and I know it will be a blast 🔥🤘🏼
There's some trust :)
Seeing his demonstration of that line in Reptile was so crazy to watch. Spence is one of my favorite vocalists too and it's so inspiring seeing you guys break things down. I've got a question for you Chris! Are those additional overtones in his voice(in the "studio" demo of Reptile) being produced as a result of more air/pressure being used?
More airflow AND compression. His false cords are holding back MORE air relative to the support 'push'. His primary cords are also stretched a bit more and still engaged so his fundamental pitch in the scream is higher and more divergent from the sound his false cord compression is creating! GREAT question!
@@chrisliepe Thanks for the reply!! So interesting. Gave me chills when he did that!
What a man, what a vocalist 🤌🏼🍖
Agreed!
This video is spot on, Chris. Really, it resonates terribly with what I experienced in the past. It is of vital importance to keep in mind what you are comparing when, while learning, you measure yourself against something which is far more than simply another person singing. Regardless of everyone's amount of talent.
I guess you probably went through those "independent musician's hardships" yourself?
Rory from Dayseeker is also an amazing singer in the same vein as Spencer.
So uh when do we get that full backstreet cover? :)
hahah... the rest of it is locked away in the digital vault FOREVER!!
@@chrisliepe I need it! 😬
That intro was pretty cool 🔥
I’ve just finished this video and also warm ups. I do the same thing with low pitch vocal fry! I’m not screamer, but maybe I’ll carefuly try some stuff :-) What I’ve also found useful for my voice is singing in low barytone register for warm up, I don’t approach for the tones in my head voice when I start with it, I have to try the falseto thing!
Love this
Great content guys 👌
Trying to sing like your favourite singer from one of their studio recordings is never going to work, but I've heard plenty of 'live' performances by singers I admire to know that they are far better singers than I will probably ever be. I've taken instruction from multiple singing teachers & have nearly always been able to do the exercises, but always fall short of singing my favourite singers songs very well. Just my observations.
Most singing exercises have HURT my voice more than helping. What's worked WAY better: Making "exercises" out of small parts of my favorite songs with vocalists that I aspire to sing like like. But doing very short, very introspective practice sessions and pulling as much as I possibly can vocally out of a single phrase.
Zarpado !! Tremenda junta!
I'm very interested in hearing this stuff. Great!
Glad to hear it!
Can't wait!
So interesting!!!!
Periphery!!! Spencer!!
This was a great one. I’d love to see this video format with someone that primarily screams and tours a ton. Someone like Corpsegrinder who has a billion years of experience and uses his voice very aggressively would probably be able to share some neat insight.
Or Randy Blythe from Lamb of God.
I actually agree with him saying the studio is more nerve racking. My band recorded an EP near the end of 2019 and at that point we had played plenty of shows, one had close to like 900 people and I was way more nervous on the drive to the studio than when me and the guys were tuning up and shit back stage right before we got on.
Super cool, I like seeing the body language difference, which even goes softer than what’s presented in the warmup course. I’d be interested to know if he felt there was a difference between those warmups in the studio, as opposed to pre-live, in the intensity.
Thanks Guys
Thanks!!!
This is fucking sick. Sorry for the explicit text, but this is FUCKING AMAZING! This is the stuff everyone wants to know. Even those who don't even sing. Thank you for making this, thank you for sharing your routine.
So much bro love
heheh i usually say when performing live you gotta use the noise of the lights or when things start going a bit south put more feeling into it lol meaning theres several aspects to engage with your audience that pure voice performance ceases to be so important, ive seen shows live i thought were amazing and later listening and watching to recordings of those shows and thinking man lol that wasnt so great but the crowd was wild either way and everybody did have a great time and thats what matters in the end.. Love the new content by the way great \m/ you guys rock
Spencer is such a badass
5:44 send this to your best friend without context
How they managed to keep a straight face is beyond me, I was laughing in tears
Pure riffery 🔥👌🏻
My like on this video just took the like count to 666. If that ain't rock-n-roll, nothin is. Another great video Chris, can't wait for the next one.
Six ... six six... the number of the beast!!!
@@chrisliepe not to be confused with 668, the neighbor of the beast.
best intro ever
No wonder I almost destroy my voice everytime I sing Follow your Ghost. At 4:45 when he sings “your hero falls” is almost impossible to replicate
5:27 So cool to hear his screams without music! I would be curious to hear how loud they really are (I mean, without the audio effects/compression that you certainly add)
They feel quite loud in the studio. Lots of air moving!
Good stuff :)
