GM Akobian vs. IM Emory Tate | North American Open 2014 - GM Varuzhan Akobian - 2015.01.04

  • Grandmaster Var Akobian returns to Saint Louis to show the kids a 17-move miniature he recently played. His opponent was risky in the opening and paid for it. Also, a mate-in-3 and a difficult study where you use distant opposition to draw.

    Emory Tate had a lot of brilliant moves, too. His risky style resulted in lots of neat games like this and from what I remember, he didn't mind the risk. It's the sort of thing that makes chess more fun. RIP.

    amazing how effortlessly Akobian won. this Nb5 sacrifice should just jump into your mind like a hot toast. it does not matter what piece checks or mates a trapped king.

      ***** what you call work I call virtual cheating. Often that involves repeating engine lines which is not right in terms of sportmanship for me. On the other hand I just play chess. It is not a job for me so whatever.

    I feel it's a bit overkill to have one of America's 10 best chess players teaching such painfully simple lessons. Many 2000 rated players who are equally talented as teachers could probably give similar lessons. Let's get some more strategic lessons, or advanced game analyses from our resident genius!

    • @misanthrop1958
      @misanthrop1958 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      For normal club players like me (1700) it is NOT painfully simple. A genius like you should probably get lessons from Carlsen. At least!

      Nobody is saying that it isn't instructive. Nor am I implying that the lecture isn't instructive for myself in many ways. I'm saying that you don't need someone over 2600 teaching beginner lectures.

    • @lenks0
      @lenks0 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @ thegreatsolar, yes, I agree. Err... so why am I here? Akobian (and others) often show very instructive games even if they give bare minimum analysis (and sometimes no analysis, just basic observation). Especially classics from former world champions, they are useful way beyond what's given in the basic lecture and I get to see these games without going through 10s or 100s to find 1 gem. This one, not so much, but this was an excellent beginner class. I just wish STL had more tournaments to compliment these excellent resident GMs. Kids need to play as much as (well, probably more than) they need to study.
