Rusty Bench Grinder Restoration

- This is a video about the process of restoring a rusty bench grinder. I bought it at a Japan recycle shop. It is in a rusted condition and has lost all specifications. So it is not possible to know the brand. It is quite old, uses 125mm grinding wheel and power is about 200w. The machine uses a 110V power supply with a frequency of 50-60Hz. I'm very happy to receive your feedback, advice, suggestions to improve myself.

So…
I don’t mean to be rude.
But you didn’t changed the bearings, that usually are cheap and the old one could be worn and cause problems.
The old ones were sealed for a reason.
You didn’t remove all of the rust (like on the inside of the 2 side “cones”) but you just painted (and painted not really good and with no primer) so within months you will have to face the same problem of rust an paint flaking off.
Let’s say that you have big margins to improve on.
Keep on going and try to improve every time.
At that time, I simply saw that it was still usable, but when I installed it, I realized it had to be replaced. Thank you for your comments, I will try to improve in the next videos, please watch and give me your feedback.

Very good video. Master of Restoration.😀😃😃😃😄
😂 thank you very much
Nice work bro🙂
thank ^^ have a nice day !
Valve grinding compound on the tip of a screwdriver is incredibly helpful getting out stubborn screws
I was able to open most of the rusted screws that way
You'll need to dress and true up the wheels with a diamond dressing tool, there is a lot of vibration, even though they are new wheels. Add four rubber feet underneath. The wire crimps at 6:33 indicate it is modern. New bearings may help with the vibration.
It still runs more perfect if done as you said. I will try to do better in the following videos 🥰🥰🥰 thank you very much
Looks like it was left outside for a long time
Thanks you ^^ have a nice day

Don’t be discouraged with negative comments. You are doing a good job and keep it up.
Thank you very much 🥰🥰🥰
Use WD40 penetrating oil on rusty screws and bolts, it really helps loosen them.
Thank you, I will use them
That was a tough job! Amazing
Thank you 🥰🥰🥰
Good job...stay safe...captjack...
Thanks you very much 🥰🥰🥰 have a nice day
What a great restoration. I enjoyed watching the process.
Thank youuu ^^
I would put a entry gland or grommet on the power cord entry to the unit
Looks like that place was originally like that
@@hbrestorationnevertheless, you should install a grommet.
I will add them.thanks for your comment@@patrickperry6945
you hammered the bearings out and put them back in? oh - my - God.
I should replace it, I will try to do better in the upcoming videos
@@hbrestoration I hope they're working at least until further notice. :D
@TheColinChapman They still work fine but if I could replace them it would be perfect
Nice video and restoration but you need a sandblaster
thanks for your comment. I don't have that device at the moment. I will buy it in the future 😊
Excellent job
Thank you 🥰🥰🥰
Przepiękne jest to odrestaurowane ta stara zabytkowa szlifierska pozdrawiam serdecznie 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you very much 🥰🥰🥰
Using the side of the grinding wheel is dangerous. The flat front is to be used for most things and this grinder seems to be missing the rests that help you use the front. It is a great restoration though.
Thank for your comment 😊 have a nice day
A job well done like this, it was best to change the bearings
Thank youu🥰🥰🥰
When handling fiberglass or cutting fiberglass, please be sure to wear a respirator.
thank you, it's very malicious. I will make it better in the next videos
you should try an impact screw driver they're really good ohh i forgot some wd40 works well also😉🙂
thank for my comment ♥
Parts must be sandblasted after the paint stripping job
I don't have a sandblaster yet, currently I remove the set rust with a grinder
And when repainted, repainted completely. Not 1 weak coat and call it a day.
No it doesn't. It helps and primer also and yellows the worst color to paint. It takes lots and lots of coats to cover well. The young man's I'm sure doing the best with what he has. Keep at it you'll be a pro no time. Take your time on these projects. It shuts people like us up!😅
Congratulations on a job well done!
Thank you 🥰🥰🥰
One thing missing is supposed to be a shield over the wheels when you’re grinding store
Yepp, add those two shields, I'll try to do better in the next videos
Respirator and gloves very necessary . Dust from fiberglass is extremely dangerous
Thank you for the reminder. I will be more careful
Thank you so much ^^That's a good idea. I will do better in the next videos
🤝
🥰 good job..Can’t wait to see more!

Good restoration, but not changing the bearings is a big mistake.
Yepp, I will try to do better in the next videos
Beautiful restoration.

Thank for your comment 🥰 i'm very happy see it. have a nice day !
Parabéns 🎉🥳👏 seu trabalho é top 10 👋👍
thank my friend 😊
One thing I do when those button head screws strip themselves out, is cut a line right down the middle and turn it into a large flat head screw. That works almost every time.
I don't understand why the devices I try to restore are always so difficult to open
@@hbrestorationit's called rust baby. With out rust you would have nothing to restore. Make this a game. Everytime you finish a restoration try and trade up with some one. If your good and stay at it who knows how high up you can take it!

thank you very much ^^
Congratulations Very nice!. You did a great job!! It's great to bring that old machine back to life. Your work has entered the top 10 👋👍🎉 👏
Thank you
I did not see a cable grommet used for the mains cable - Very Important. Otherwise, a nice video.
It's an old rope, still works fine, I'll try to do better in the next videos
parabéns seu trabalho ficou top 👏👍
Thank you❤️❤️❤️
Nice improvement over the last video. Congrats on this great restoration.
I'm glad you watched my videos and commented. Have a good day🥰🥰🥰
@@hbrestoration It's not a restoration tho. sure you've made some new components and cleaned some stuff off, but when i think of restoration i think total restoration. leaving the screws rusted and just painting over them is just prolonging the inevidable. but hey, as long as you get views right?
Perfect 👌
Thank you 🥰🥰
penetrating oil needs some time to loose rusted bolts. I let then sit for 24h and even more .
it will also be a little easier to open
Nice job!
Thank youuu🥰🥰🥰

FICOU NOVO PARABENS PELA RESTAURAÇÁO ❤
Thanks you ^^
Oh really? Washed bearings are a good restoration? Ridiculous.
the 2 bases for supporting the pieces to be sanded appear to be mounted upside down
they usually stay higher up
about halfway up the grindstone
Thanks for your comment. I will try to do better in the next videos ^^
Excelente
Thank you 🥰🥰🥰
Awesome
Thanks you ! Have a nice day ^^
Please, change the bearings. 🙋♂️
I checked it, it's still in good condition
4:07 What are you doing to the screws? Are you flattening the sides to make it easier to grip?
yes, it was too rusted to screw
Very nice renovation, but you could think about adding a plexiglass cover on a small hinge and a support to hold the material under the grinding wheel.
thank you 😊 i"ll try to do better to the next videos
it was great, I really liked your video. I only I wrote this comment because I think it will improve the comfort of using this machine.
Not sure fiberglass end caps are gonna work if those grinding stones come apart 😵💫no stress relief on your electrical cord where it enters the housing😮
I will add it, thank you very much
Why didn’t you at least sand out the inside of the yellow end caps around the motor shaft? And the shaft of the motor? Even the yellow paint job looks like it needs at LEAST one more coat. It’s like you put 100% effort into 75% of the project. Very strange.
Thank you for your comment, I will try to do better in the next videos, hope to receive comments from you.
Surprised you didn’t try an impact screw driver on the Philips screws 1 swing of the hammer and they break free 9 times out of 10.
I tried them first and couldn't open them. I will try to do better in the following videos
That’s a THIN coat of yellow paint! Did you run out?
yep. I will try to do better in the following videos. You can watch it on the channel, I just made it public
Why did you not add all the parts back to it?
What parts? New switch, new paint, new wheel guards, new cord, new screws, new support washers for the new wheels. You must mean the seals on the bearings. Once you pull those I'd like to see anyone put the back. He did put them on the clean I side though😊
Good job that must be 90 years old
Thanks 😂I think about 20-30 years old
@@hbrestoration ok
Not hardly, the wiring was way to new to be 90 years old.
@@fredmartin126 That rusted old thing was made like in 1920s or 1930s and that came very long before I was born
👍
❤️
Is it really that hard to knock the bolts?Of course, it's easier to cover them and then suffer with an engraver
I've tried to open it by beating it and even setting it on fire, but still can't
Omg that yellow came out horrible. Definitely need 2-3 more coats but looks good in all
Yepp, I will try to do better in the next videos
🥲 i'll try to do better ih the next videos
by the way , do you use all these devices ?
I don't use them all. Only a few are needed
I still use it in all my work now
in vest in bolt buster heater coil. It will make your life easier and maybe save the screw. It heat the bolt and you spray it down and loosen the bolt
Thank you for your comment, I will try to do better in the following products
The restoration turned out quite well. But I suggest you do not grind metal on the side of the wheels. This can cause the wheels to malfunction, either by becoming off balanced or by fracturing. This can be dangerous to the user and those around them.
Thank you for that advice, it's very helpful ♥♥♥♥ I still do it without knowing it

17:05 The bearings of electric motors are not returned after dismantling, but are replaced with new ones. It's not enough to lubricate them. It's a tiny item, but it makes running much easier - in the video, during the final function test, you can hear a humming noise when running, which is bad and indicates just worn bearings. Flawless bearings run virtually noiselessly.
I checked it and found it quite slippery, I think keeping the original ring quality is still better than the type we replace. But it seems like it's loud and no longer good. I will try to do better in the next videos. Thank you
@@hbrestoration I can tell you from experience that manufacturers never put the best quality they can get into bench grinders - it's just a consumer product, and if it was as rusty as the one in the video, it probably already had a dozen hours on it. And if the condition of the bearings was like the one in the video, I wouldn't even dare to put them back in the grinder - you just have to turn the bearings when you install them, so they'll spin in the opposite direction and it's no different than how they "ran" when new, and it immediately increases their noise level. Add to that the fact that some of the parts are downright visible with bits of rust, and if it wasn't just a showpiece that will never be sanded, I would definitely replace the bearings without mercy.
Thank you for sharing your experience
Since that is an all metal tool, an earth wire is needed.
Yes, I think so too. This is the original wire, it seems like it doesn't have a connecting wire.@@danielcobbins8861

You can't be happy with that paint job, surely.
yep The paint inside is not very good. I will try to do better in the next videos
H
(Not to Liam, but OP) the paint inside the motor end caps wasn’t refinished at all… and the paint outside looks incomplete to say the least. The driveshaft needs sanding. The power cord needs a grommet of some kind around the entrance to the wiring housing.

Snachala neobk
