      haha moving house is always such a dilemma Sylvia, and we have to move house again in the coming future as we need more space and don't like the neighbourhood that we live in, the last time we moved we found spines in places that we never even knew existed hahaha, thanks so much Sylvia for your wonderful comments and support and for watching, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Malta for a fantastic afternoon XXXX

    Thank you for such an informative video! It was refreshing to see an example of people taking the time to show love and care to all living beings (both animal and plant) during a stressful venture like moving. I loved the two-week follow-up that showed that everyone made it and is thriving. I saw a few cacti that I was thinking of getting but in the back of my mind I asked myself, "but what if we move?!" After this video I have no more anxiety about this, but I soon shall have more cacti.

    Greetings from NY! How absolutely wonderful for you both to take the time to share your experiences. This video is so helpful. I thought I had a daunting task ahead with 81 houseplants and tons of very tall crazy-growing fantail willows, but you 'take the cake!' Well thank you again for the wonderfully detailed video and commentary.

      Cacti_lover_1 haha! Yes moving house is a nightmare with all the cacti, but I have moved house so many times now that it is really not so bad as it seems haha! The worst was moving them all from uk to Ireland and bringing them across on the ferry in the van LOL! and I have a lot more now than then, although the greenhouse and house is full, I can always find room for one or a few more haha! Thanks so much for watching Sabian and have a FANTASTIC evening ahead XXXXX :-)

    Michael repotted them for me last summer.Mine have so many young ones sprouting;full of bigger and smaller.Many fall off and we must plant.We carefully take a small spoon or butter knife and dig a small hole trying not to get an orange finger, or two, with hundreds of tiny cactus needles or some big needles!!With little metal grabbers we hold it carefully to place in the hole to,"tuck it in"We the counter, towels, sponge we use to clean up is full of needles! Please tell us how you do it! (-; XX

  • @featheredfan
    @featheredfan 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is a great demo video! The use of cardboard and newspaper is very practical. BTW - You could also use Styrofoam beans and masking tape for the spines that stick through. Bubble wrap can also be useful, but it might snag on some plants. Haha, the key word for most of the Opuntia genus is "glochid" and that plant is loaded with them. Do you know the name of your Prickly Pear? Wow, I can see that this was a major operation for you and it is so nice that you filmed it for us. Yes, I have been thinking about watching this and now I want you to know that this cool video is at the top of TH-cam's list of related videos for my last upload, the big cactus move video. Isn't that neat? Well, I like your house moving and cactus packing methods and Sean & Rusty too. Thanks

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Thanks a million for your AMAZING comment and for watching this vid :-) haha! We had such fun and games that day moving house with all the cacti, We were still finding spines in places we never knew existed weeks after haha! That's a brilliant idea about the Styrofoam beans and masking tape, hopefully we won't be moving for a while LOL! OMG! The glochids on the Opuntia's are the worst, they get EVERYWHERE haha! unfortunately I don't know the name of my Opuntia and because there is so many that all look similar I can't match it up 100% when I look online, but if you have any idea that would be fab :-) Soooooooo looking forward to watching your cactus move vid, i am going to watch it now and have the popcorn ready LOL! Thanks so much and sending you tons of LOVE and HAPPINESS for a FANTASTIC day ahead :-) XXXXXXX

    • @featheredfan

      heartfullofhappiness OK, I have concluded that your Prickly Pear is a variety of Opuntia aciculata and please don't rely on the Wiki images for now, though there is some good info there, to read. The CactiGuide website has eight much better shots of two varieties. Here is the link:
      cactiguide.com/cactus/?genus=Opuntia&species=aciculata
      Enjoy and do make sure to tell me if I'm wrong, haha!

      To FeatheredFan. Hi there. I just found your channel thanks to this comment. Your name caught my attention. I love the few videos I have seen so far. Is that your private outdoor collection or are you a vendor? Either way it's very cool. I wish you would turn on comments. I love talking to people with cool jobs. It's been three years and I'd love to see what you have growing now since you have so many cool in ground adult species. Your property just looks lovely. I hope you'll find this comment and reply.

    I would love to know how you handled the hanging succulents without breaking the longer growth. I have a Christmas cactus, a Burrito sedum, and a Huernia schneideriana that all dangle down below the bottom of their pots, and I'm at a loss at how to pack them properly.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Janet :-D I was lucky with the hanging plants as the removal van had hooks that I hung the hanging baskets up with but I rolled soft cardboard around them with tape, with some of the ones that hang down but not in hanging baskets I placed them in a soft cardboard made into a cone shape and gently lifted the stems up, good luck with moving house :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from the Emerald Isle XXXXX

      @@desertplantsofavalon Thanks for the reply! I hope hanging them will be an option for me too. All your cardboard cylinders have given me an idea though. Is there any process to be followed if I want to move them bare rooted (I mean without pot/soil) ???

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +x1234yz Thanks so much for watching and your question :-) It would really depend on how many and the duration that the move will take, but I guess if you place scrunched up newspaper at the base where the roots will be and place the plant on it and then inside a box making sure to protect them from getting damaged from neighboring plants just like in this film then they should be fine, but there is always a risk to the plant being damaged in transport as its roots are exposed, and also extra care taken when repotting them all again making sure you get the soil mix right, but all in all it should be fine. Wishing you ever success with the move and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and happy growing from Ireland and have a wonderful new week ahead XXXXX

    • @x1234yz
      @x1234yz 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Desert Plants of Avalon Thank you so much for your valuable input. Appreciated. Considering the fact that shipping may take 4-7 days to reach the destination, do you recommend to uproot the plant and dry it for few days before packing so as to avoid root rot. Also, would you treat the plant and/or roots with some kind of fungicide to avoid the rot? Thanks again for responding to my query. Lots of love and happiness to you too from India. --- Ulhas

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +x1234yz Hi Ulhas :-) Yes I would definitely recommend removing them from their pots beforehand to let the roots be dry before packing them up, this will greatly reduce any chance of the roots rotting :-) I wouldn't treat the plants with fungicide as long as they are kept dry, they should be absolutely fine :-) Hope everything goes really well with the move and sending loads of love to you from Ireland to India XXXXXXXX

    This is such a wonderful video. Thanks for sharing with us! I am curious about how you would propose to move one of these fellas… www.thecactusking.com/plants/all-plants/consolea-rubescens
    Mine is about 4 feet tall and has many arms that are probably a couple feet in width. Since he's more flat than round, I was curious what you might suggest. I moved him a few years ago when he was much smaller and he actually fit on the floorboard of my car for transport across the United States. But now he's a bit trickier. And as I'm sure you understand, he MUST come with me :-)
